I saw both, and while I have been harsh on Man of Steel I will say that I did enjoy the movie... however it was not a movie about the Superman I know, and it did not fill me with the same emotional connection to Superman that the Christopher Reeve films did, on the other hand I have spoke glowingly about Pacific Rim and for good reason... it was a take on a giant monster movie, which I have been a fan of since the 1970's when I was a small child (Creature Double Feature on the TV every Saturday morning after cartoons were over rocked so hardcore) and though it had as many plot holes and character flaws in it as MoS, it was the greatest giant monster movie ever made to date.
So lets compare.. lackluster Superman movie that failed to engage on an emotional level or tie in to the source material fully
OR.... Greatest Giant Monster movie made that was perfectly attuned to the source material and had me excited all the way through.
I wanted to love MoS, but it failed me- Pacific Rim wow'd me bigtime! MY VOTE::::: Pacific Rim
Now, take a step back and let the reality of what Hollywood would bring to the big screen fill your mind's eye... and the tie in toys they'd make to put in the Happy Meal boxes... and the rampant disregard for the true source material- those old black and white films, and pulp action adventure novels, cause that sh!t's just too oldschool for today's slick movie goer.
and therein lies the problem
Hollywood in it's infinite wisdom would ruin what was a fantastic franchise (if we can ignore the one with the kid from Transformers) in it's lustful and greedy grab for the proverbial gold at the end of the rainbow- there is no gold at the end of the rainbow if the rainbow itself is a heap of dogsh!t. That is just what we'd get, 'Indiana-heap o'dogsh!t-Jones and the Quest for the Gold at the end of the Rainbow'.
