I had hope for the whole X-Men First class sequel. While the first movie butchered all the characters involved (and I mean looking at the movie independently of the comics) except for Xavier and Magneto I still liked it. First Class is arguably the best X movie we've gotten. Considering how bland X1 and X2 were and how horrific X3 was this really shoots a hole in the boat. I did enjoy Mr and Mrs Smith but it takes a special kind of person to write a good X-Men story and I just don't see Simon Kinberg suddenly becoming that person. They need a script writer on the level of Whedon or Brad Bird or Bryan Fuller who knows how to handle an ensemble. I'll still give the movie a shot but man I wish the movie license would revert back to Marvel. I get the feeling Fox is going to burn us out on bad X-Men movies before that happens though.

From a business/writing perspective I think a villain going back and forth is inevitable. Characters have to be dynamic to be relatable and super heroes need villains to punch.

From a not so cynical point of view, yes people can permanently change for the better but at the same time everyone screws up sometime.

The whole Guardians of the Galaxy aspect really brings in a lot of questions for the Avengers sequel possibility. I would imagine that would indicate the villain to either be Thanos or Galactus. The other question is which GoG characters will they pull for the movie? As in will it just be Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, or will they go classic with Vance Astro, Starhawk? And will they add Nova in it? There's a limit to the amount of characterization they can cram into 2 hours so I'd imagine they would just take 4 or 5 characters. I would imagine a heist movie setup would be their best option, with each character having their own specialty.

And if they do have some giant space villain for Avengers 2, how does Cap, Black Widow, and Hawkeye fight in space?

If Loeb is the writer I really hope he doesn't ruin cosmic Marvel like he ruined Ultimate Marvel.
