Welcome to the world of Mysterio, Hal Jordan!
Clash of the Comics #14
Hal Jordan vs. Mysterio
Chosen as the Green Lantern for sector 2184 after Abin Sur crash landed on Earth and its ring sought out a new champion.
Although there have been a few Mysterio over the years, Quentin Beck is the original and best. Before his career of villainy, he was an actor seeking fame. An acquaintance of his once joked that in order to become famous you have to take down a superhero. Taking the message literally Mysterio sought to confront and defeat the young Spider-man.
RazzaTazz: Hal Jordan, because that is a cool story and one of the best reboots ever I think.
MrUnknown: Hal’s origin’s good enough to call forth a movie while no one’s shown much interest in Mysterio.
Hal usually has at his disposal the green lantern ring which effectively makes it possible for him to do anything which his mind can conceive of and which his willpower can maintain.
Mysterio’s powers rely primarily upon his abilities to render illusions. However, he knows a little bit of physical combat and used to be a stuntman.
RazzaTazz: The Green Lantern ring is one of the most powerful objects in the DC Universe.
MrUnknown: Hal – Even the ring’s powers are more creative than Mysterio’s illusions.
The iconic green and black costume with the lantern on the chest. The lantern is popular to people who don't even know where it comes from
Mysterio’s helmet his earned him the nickname Fish Bowl. Other than that he wears green from neck to toe as well as a purple cape.
RazzaTazz: I will go with the iconic GL look here. Mysterio is funny though, I was nearly terrified of him on the 1970s Spider-Man show.
MrUnknown: All the earth lanterns look kind of the same, and I like Fish Bowl’s fish bowl helmet.
Brash and cocky pilot that often has to learn lessons the hard way.
Mysterio can be a bit thick headed at times as shown from his origin. He offers his service to other villains but sometimes double crosses them.
RazzaTazz: Hal as a founding JLA member and generally awesome hero, but still with some flaws.
MrUnknown: I’ll give it a tie for the thick headedness.
DC's playboy superhero, often more of a "do as I say not as I do" kind of guy.
A lot about Mysterio is well, mysterious. For example, thought to have committed suicide with a gunshot to his brain, Beck is currently back in business and how he is still alive remains shrouded in mystery. However, granted his character exemplifies a Deus Ex Machina persona, it’s not really all that surprising.
RazzaTazz: Mysterio here, he really lives up to his name
MrUnknown: Mysterio – The Deus Ex Machina concept suits his character.
I didn't mind so much when Hal left DC as a villain after Emerald Twilight (which puts me in a minority among DC fans) but I thought it was cool when he came back and restarted the sun in Final Night.
After continuously losing against Spider-man, Mysterio joined with other villains who shared a common goal and formed the Sinister Six. It was a great story but they still lost though.
RazzaTazz: We kind of need that big ball of light in the sky for a lot of things.
MrUnknown: Hal’s had quite a few great stories in recent years.
That whole thing with using his ring to age Arisia so she is no longer a teen and so they can date - kind of creepy.
He almost made Daredevil kill a baby.
RazzaTazz: Killing babies or making out with a teenager - what kind of a decision is that? Still Mysterio is a villain so I will give it to him because at least it’s in character.
MrUnknown: Tie – I can’t decide which is creepier.
Mostly left out of the animated universe in lieu of John Stewart he nonetheless has a movie coming out starring Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively.
He has appeared on the fish box in your living room numerous times but has yet to make an appearance on the big screen. I think he would make for a perfect villain as he is more believable than most of the other Spidey villains.
RazzaTazz: My opinions of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds not withstanding, that movie is going to be huge.
MrUnknown: Hal – has a movie coming in two weeks.
What is the current whereabouts of any DC hero with the news that all of Dc is getting rebooted? Despite that he is an active member of the Green Lantern Corps with his own series, and has been the basis for many DC wide crossovers in recent years.
He is currently with the reassembled Sinister Six.
RazzaTazz: Tie - both presently doing what they do best.
MrUnknown: I don’t think Mysterio is that interesting that we need to see him on a monthly basis, but Hal’s series has been one of the best DC titles for quite a few years now.
RazzaTazz: 6 – 2; MrUnknown: 5 – 2
