Tea Party's Over 0

I am, to put it lightly, not a fan of the Tea Party people, and I am someone who believes that comics can maturely and productively address issues relevant to present current events.  So you would think a story arc that deals with present day political issues and bashes the Tea Party crew would be right up my ally.  But Brubaker's "Two Americas" story arc could not end quicker, as it has just been a horribly on-the-nose look at what would happen if the mentally deranged 1950s Cap joined up with ...

Right Idea, Wrong Tone 0

I nearly passed this issue up, because it came out the same day as another Secret Warriors, and do you really need to buy two Secret Warriors books on the same day?  But I decided I also didn't really need to save $2.99 that badly, so what the hell.  And despite the Secret Warriors tag, this book is very clearly just about one Secret Warrior, Phobos, and his reaction to the death of his father at the hands of the Sentry during the events of Siege.  The story begins in a very thoughtful way, as P...

Could this be better than Twilight?!?! 0

Just kidding, of course it is.  But seriously, American Vampire is off to an excellent start.  Stephen King's name is on this book, and is likely driving most of the sales, and he does a pretty good job here with the second story.  King's story focuses on the fate of Skinner Sweet, focusing on the reaction of two very distinct sets of his enemies after Sweet's "death" last issue.  King's storytelling isn't particularly clear here--I found it difficult to track which character was which, in part ...

Only for Friends, Family, and the Super Hardcore Fans 0

Jason Aaron and Matt Fraction are easily two of the best writers in comics today, and Fraction in particular has spent a lot of time lately talking about how much he enjoyed working on this book, so I was really excited to see the promised craziness of "Who Won't Wield the Shield" for myself. After reading it, however, I came away disappointed.  Some of the artwork is great, particularly Brendan McCarthy's psychedelic take on "Doctor America" (a bizarro Captain America/Doctor Strange mashup), an...

The continuing side-stories of Batman & Robin 0

Batman: Streets of Gotham continues to be a great secondary Batman book on the strength of Paul Dini's small-scale stories and Dustin Nguyen's impressive artwork.  This issue provides the conclusion to the story begun in issue 10, in which Damian Wayne and a super-powered orphan discover together Zsasz's underground orphan gladiator fights, arranged for fun and profit (wow, that sounds completely ridiculous now that I write it down).  Dini continues to have a great grasp of Damian's character, c...

Zsasz in the City: A Slice of Life Story* 0

I'm still not entirely sure what Batman: Streets of Gotham is.  Batman is in the title, but so far he's mostly been a peripheral character.  Several other characters in the Batman universe have shared time as the focal point of the story, including Hush, Mr. Zsasz, Penguin, Firefly, and in this issue, the Broker.  Yet while Dini has repeatedly changed the perspective from which this story is being told, it hasn't been confusing in the least.  Instead, this unusual approach has proved to be an ef...

An Intriguing Start 0

The first issue of Sweet Tooth introduces us to Gus, a boy with deer-like features living in an apparently post-apocalyptic world.  Gus' father has sheltered Gus from the outside world to such a degree that Gus has never seen a human other than his father.  We learn through Gus' father that some great catastrophe occurred that changed the world, and since that time there have been very few children born, and they all have strange animal characteristics like Gus.  Gus' father eventually succumbs ...
