An old breath of fresh air. 0

This is is going to be a switchup from my normal format of reviewing current issues. After going to a great convention in my hometown and raiding the quarter-bins there for some gold, I return triumphant with some great classic DC stuff. This issue is the last issue I read of the old Suicide Squad run and while I will be discussing this issues, I'll also treat this particular book as a bit of a time capsule. Much of this book is a product of its generation, which is not so much the 90's per se bu...

Well, I feel sheepish... 0

I really had high hopes for this book, I really did. The first parts were well done character development and were a great setup for Atrocitus to go out and avenge people or whatever the hell the initial solicitation was. I was willing to accept the whole division between Bleez and Atrocitus as a good B-plot that could be expanded later, but this whole business with what are essentially the retarded Red Lanterns is too much for me. I don't care about Abysmus or his hideously malformed breathren....

The book that time will forget 0

I really question the logic of making Men Of War and cancelling it only to have another book just like it take its place. I was under the impression that GI Combat would be fairly fanciful and wouldn't have the gritty realism that was present in Men Of War. Because of that lack of flair or pisazz, this book is BORING as hell. The first story is rather bland and it might as well be called Dino Crisis or Jurassic Park:Black Ops. The characters are your typical military folks, mostly forced banter....

It's no Court Of Owls, but I doubt you'll be disappointed 0

Let's get one thing straight. Both Court Of Owls and The Culling are essentially fight comics. There's little to no large complex story and more of an excuse to have a crossover where various characters beat the hell out of something nasty or each other in this case. To be honest, the only reason I was excited about The Culling was to see a a Teen Titans/Legion Lost crossover. Both teams I like a lot and seeing them together brings out my inner fanboy. The storyline here with Harvest and his Bat...

The die is cast 0

Going into this book, I was surprised to find that it was actually quite good. Even with little background knowledge behind the current history of Scott Summers team and my general dislike of anything Avengers, this was still really suspenseful and well executed.I can see MArvel is taking some cues from Geoff Johns' Justice League and setting everything up like a Hollywood movie. All of the exposition is easy to understand and cram into the issue and the setup for the event is well played. Despi...

I wrote a review for Batgirl a few days ago explaining how it wasn't your average Bat family title, Batwoman is the same but written a lot better. There is some damn good character development and a lot of great action too. More happens within an issue than most story arcs.At the same time, there are glaring issues that might prevent Batwoman from getting the same attention as Scott Snyder's Batman. The first is the storytelling. While its very interesting and intricately woven together, it will ...

well, that was something at least 0

While I would normally criticize this issue for being hasty and having some pointless plot twists, I still liked the setup for World's Finest at the end. Just from a couple bits of dialogue, we can gather that Huntress and Power Girl are a good match. I only wish this issue could've led into the next ongoing better. I really can't blame Paul Levitz for the way this book turned out, the tides changed rapidly at DC and I think this book suffered as a result. While I can't expect every writer to be...

Not your average Bat book 0

For a while, I was on the fence about Batgirl. It was well written in terms of character and drama but the overall plot was lacking. You'd have some good moments like Babs explaining her relationship with Dick and Bruce and her father and the sudden appearance of her estranged mother but in terms of action, there's not much. I'd hesitate to call it a Bat Family soap opera bu that's kinda what it feels like. While I like what Gail Simone has done so far, I can't help but feel she should be workin...

a pleasant surprise 0

To start things off, I have a very basic idea of Age of Apocalypse and I know very little about the universe other than the overall concept. I know even less about William Stryker, at one point I thought he and Thunderbolt Ross were the same character. Still, I can't really harp on this comic much. This is a good introduction to the nasty brutal world where mutants hunt down the last remaining humans. To start off, William Stryker in this universe is apparently Batman. His intro pretty much desc...

what I predict the next issue of Green Arrow will be like 0

The reason for the oblique title for this review is that this issue of Resurrection Man is a good example of how to start off a good arc after a crappy one. While I stated that Andy Lanning and Dan Abnett didn't know where they were going with the story, here it seems they've decided to lay off the wackiness and ground things for once. I'm sure fans of this book who were expecting more supernatural and sci-fi stuff are going to be disappointed but I think as long as this book plays out the suspe...

I'm sold 0

Note: I apologize that this may be a long review as I intend to talk about the TMNT micro series too. This was a slow week for DC and there wasn't any Marvel book I was interested in picking up, so I decided to try out something new. Thanks to me playing the old video games on my emulator, I've been getting back into TMNT. Despite this being Issue Six, this could easily be a first issue. It opens with enough information and closes with you wanting more. While I don't really care about the events ...

what the Green Lantern cartoon wishes it was 1

I still can't get over how great this book has been getting. There are times when I think Geoff Johns couldn't pull off the things Tony Bedard is doing with this book. Chief among them is making Kyle Rayner a likeable and funny straight-man for a team of psychos. Its no secret that Johns loves to use Hal Jordan and this is the type of GL book that I wouldn't want to see yet another character study of Hal. Tony Bedard is working with the groundwork that Johns laid down is elaborating on some of t...

Release schedules are as unstable as the Speed Force, apparently 0

Now don't get me wrong, I love the Flash series right now and Francis Manapul has been doing great art-wise and story-wise so far. Yeah, he's a novice but over time he's been able to get better and better, but this is a bad conclusion to an otherwise decent arc.The last issue had a lot of great character development with Manuel Lago and Barry's relationship with him. One man is running away from trouble and the other running towards it, a great setup and I though that this would be an epic concl...

The miniseries that acts like an ongoing 0

To preface this review, I'd like to say that Huntress is one of my favorite DC characters, she's always delievered a massive amount of badassery and while it certainly shows up here in the series, there are many other issues with the Huntress book out right now.First off, I'm not entirely sure why Huntress needs to be self-contained and to have a more realistic grounding. While this may work for Batman Begins, on Huntress it feels a little forced. There is almost no connection to the rest of the...

While my last review of Teen Titans ended with me declaring I'd given up on this book, I'm afraid I'm dead wrong. While it still needs some more time to get great, the fact that the team is assembled and ready to go is good news. Lobdell has been criticized for his dialogue being cheesy and I'd agree with that, yet he's able to do team books very well because of how he handles the characterization. Teen Titans probably should've been assembled sooner. Comparing this to Red Hood, where Lobdel was...

Risen from the depths 0

Aquaman is proving to be DC's most successful relaunch. Not only in terms of revamping a joke character into a relatable, capable, and badass superhero but also in completing its beginning story arc in less than a year. What this means is that Geoff Johns already had a plan for Aquaman and how his world fits into the bigger picture long before the other books in the New 52. While other books are only now getting on track, Aquaman is already looking ahead. While Justic League is basically a Hollyw...

Jane, stop this crazy thing! 0

I really wanted to give this book a chance to impress me. Based on the glowing recommendations by my local shop owner, I picked up the last few issues of this book and I was thrilled with the first and second issues, but there were warning signs on issue three and by this one, I may not pick up #5. Let me start by saying that this is not a bad comic, It just seems that Andy Lanning and Dan Abnett aren't sure where they're going with this book. They started with a very Animal Man/Swamp Thing feel...

Strange days ahead... 0

I've never been much into the X-men after the dreadful run of Chuck Austen and the simple fact that the stories were mostly the same with cheap relationship drama and the same tired old ''humans oppressing mutants'' schtick that got old years ago. The X-Men were great during the Grant Morrison era when the book embraced how silly the whole concept was. This book also follows that same idea that the X-Men don't have to be dark and serious to be awesome and that Marvel books can have as much fun w...

False advertising be damned! 0

My only disappointment with this book is that despite the man on the cover looking exactly like Sportsmaster from Young Justice, it isn't. No, instead in typical Suicide Squad tradition, they take an obscure character. This time, its Mad Dog, a generic hockey themed Punisher clone from the 90's. Still, its hilarious and awesome when he inevitably gets killed in a gruesome fashion. The biggest shocker for me was the Harley and Deadshot scene. The sexual tension is played with very well and it does...

eating crow seems oddly appropriate... 0

A while ago I said in a rather ill-tempered blog post why I didn't really like this book because of the fantasy settings, the unrecognizable characters and the hype. Well, I have to say, I was dead wrong. This book is good, not very good, but good enough to warrant me buying the second and third issues to see where it goes. This book does what very fantasy books can do in that it doesn't bog itself down in detail like most sci-fi and fatasy and instead decides to simply tell a story with a motle...

We're sitting on your plane, Dick... 0

This was one of the few comics that made me exclaim ''Whoa''. I have to say that it's one of the best comics I've read in months and I don't say that lightly, its brilliant and a great example of taking a familiar character and putting him into not so familiar territory. The entire twist with Mr. Haly needing to meet Dick and wanting to hand over the Circus to him was completely unexpected and powerful as hell. Suddenly Dick is given a big responsibilty and with that comes finding out things tha...

Duck and Cover 2

Jesus, what a mess. Funny how Batgirl gets deeper and more interesting and Firestorm gets sloppier and more incomprehensible. I can't believe Gail Simone wrote this, almost none of her charm is present here, save for the homicidal merc team which doesn't get that much panel time sadly. More is explained about the plot bu by now, I stopped caring especially when all of these details could've been told more concisely last issue. Because the plot can't move anywhere, more bizarre shit happens for n...

Underwhelmed is more like it... 2

I had a lot of high hopes for this book. I love Young Justice and the original Teen Titans book but Scott Lobdell is really slipped with this issue. Its not like this book sucks, its actually quite good in some parts, its just so bland and uninteresting. The interactions that made Red Hood more interesting and fun are barely present here. There's some good dialogue to be had, but its buried under so much padding that I find myself less interested everytime I re-read. I tried to really get into t...

at least its more competent than Superboy 0

I must say that this is an actual improvement over the last issue of this series. The smut was kept to a mimimum and there was actually some consistency throughout the story. I'm not crazy about leaving Jason's convoluted backstory intact though. I can see this being as unnecessary as leaving Barbara Gordon's time as Oracle intact in the new Batgirl. There are parts where the flashbacks are too jarring and I think the name ''The Untitled'' sounds fricking lazy but I'll live if this series actual...

Scott Lobdell has been watching too much Evangelion 0

This is easily the most disappointing book for the second month of the New 52. I had such high hopes for this title, especially considering how cool Superboy is in Young Justice. With a solid introduction and Dc's teaser about an alien prison riot, I thought this issue would be mostly about Superboy beating the shit out of a lot of Green Lantern enemies. Sadly, I was wrong, this is half talking and the other half, Superboy getting his ass handed to him by two aliens. Way to build up the characte...

Two for the show 0

Let me start by saying how much I love Young Justice and how great that DC is beginning to integrate aspects of it into the comics. A generous cross-pollination is always a good, just look at Harley Quinn. I have to say that this book was pretty fun for a while. Kid Flash is introduced right at the start in probably the most hilarious intro ever. Guess, we know who the team fuck-up is going to be. But then again, if this going off of Youn Justice, Kid Flash may prove to be useful eventually. I w...

Flight of Fury 0

I was looking forward to this book since the relaunch was announced. Gail Simone's name on the credits instantly caught my eye and I was eagerly waiting. While I can't say I'm super-disappointed, I can't say I'm super-impressed. This book is the exact opposite of Batgirl. Batgirl has a great plot but terrible characterization. This has FANTASTIC characterization but the plot doesn't seem to be there. The book starts off great establishing the relationship between Ronnie and Jason and I really li...

Brian K. Vaughn could not have been involved with this 1

Story time! When I got into comics after I got out of anime, Wanted was one of the first trade paperbacks I ever picked up. At the time, I thought it was delightfully playful yet vulgur and an example of how cool comics were compared to anime. Now, a few years later when I read actual comics and not limited series/glamour projects, I find this book absolutely awful. I'll give it the benfit of the doubt for having somewhat decent art and a few character designs that were cool looking. I have to w...

More of this please 2

Before this comic, I hated Green Arrow. I always found him a cheesy and stupid character with a retarded achery schtick. The political underpinnings made him even more unbearable. Suddenly, a goofy Robin Hood-type superhero bcame a vehicle for social justice, who'd have thunk? It was hard as hell even locating a store in the South Bay that still had a copy of this, as far as I know, this book is doing well in sales, which is a miracle to sy the least.Anyway. This issue is fanatstic in a lot of wa...

sigh.... 1

I heard all the bad reviews about this series and I was curious to see how crappy it really is. Good lord, I had no idea it was this terrible. Considering that it somewhat follows Countdown's continuity, that should be a bad enough sign. I'm also pissed off at how completely pointless and vague the entire premise of Cry Fo Justice is. Not once is the premise even remotely addressed properly, instead we basically get Prometheus concocting a ridiculous and ill-defined plan of inter-dimensional kee...
