10 Favorite Graphic Novels (featuring Super-Heroes)

I doubt there are very many surprises here, but nonetheless...

List items

  • Game changer. Nothing I could say here that hasn't been said already. This book deserves all the praise it gets. Just...pretend that the sequel doesn't exist.

  • This is pretty much the only Superman-centric story that I've really enjoyed. I would love for someone to change my mind and recommend something else.

But seriously, I love this book. It exemplifies how super-hero comics can be used as a way to genuinely reflect on the human condition. Some say its too political, I say its just enough.

  • The "Joker's Origin" part of this book is actually my least favorite. Its Joker's dialogue throughout that really makes it, and how each character reacts differently to his insanity.

  • Another one that would be pointless to go through, but yes its that good. I wouldn't say its the 'best', mostly due to the 'classic' art style (I understand its intentional) and really there's not much actual comic. Its definitely the best written comic ever, but comics are a visual medium as well.

  • This was my first real time introduction into following a story arc from beginning to end, and really my first honest look at Batman (in comics, at least). This story arc still blows my mind to this day, and it is endlessly re-readable. The art though...my GOD I love the art here. The high-contrast, use of shadow, and minimal use of color make every page pop. The unique design of the characters in the Batman setting to accommodate this style makes even Solomon Grundy look beautiful.

  • Catwoman's accompaniment to Long Halloween isn't nearly as good, but is still well worth the read. This is the book that made me a fan of Catwoman as her own character, rather than just arm-candy for Batman. She has depth and drive, and nowhere can you see it better than in When In Rome. Time Sale's art is, again, breathtaking. I can't give him enough praise, or DC enough praise for taking a chance here.

  • Ghost Rider is my favorite Marvel character, and the reprints of 'The Original Ghost Rider' were my first comic purchases. However I lost track of the book after I grew tired of Danny Ketch and his bizarre and convoluted story. Road to Damnation is where I jumped back on, and man I'm glad I did. The story here is simple (Johnny Blaze going on a quest to escape Hell), but the execution is so much fun. Its everything I loved about Ghost Rider - the dark subject matter, the battle between good and evil, the Jekyll/Hyde nature of the character, and how much he exemplifies what an anti-hero can be. Clayton Crain isn't a name you hear a lot in comics and that's a shame, because his style is really beautiful. He makes Hell look GOOD.
