24 hour ComicVine embargo

I have a problem with people pirating comics. Not in the same way that I have a problem with people pirating tv or movies; generally, they do their thing and shut up about it. People pirating comics don't only spoil them by stealing from the creators, they steal from the entire community by instantly tweeting, and tumblring and threading; infecting the internet with everything they've just seen and preventing everybody else from enjoying it in the way it was intended.

This makes it near impossible for the real, honest, contributing fans to take part in their community in the run up to any major event. The comic-reading community is unique, in that one of the fundamental things that has been with all of us, since we first started reading, is themes of justice, and community, and right over wrong, and destroying the things that attempt to harm what we care about. It's in nearly every story we read, yet here you are, doing the opposite.

I don't blame the websites and moderators for allowing these things to be published, I don't blame the shop owners for double shipping or the publishers for the price of comics, I blame you, the pirates.

So just like before ASM700, I'll be taking another internet blackout; to allow for the few that are too tight to give up their time or their pennies...for something that they feel they have the right to spoil.

If you really cared about it as much as you claim to, when you try to justify stealing it, you wouldn't.

@Manbehindthewires:Is this just a general statement or are people pirating something in particular at the moment?

Either way, piracy is bad.

@V_Scarlotte_Rose: I interpreted it as Batman 17/Death of the Family related.

@V_Scarlotte_Rose: Oh, I don't know whether it's pirating or early release or what. Either way, there are multiple threads dealing with it from the standpoint of people have claim to have read it.

@V_Scarlotte_Rose: As have I. Like I said, I'm not positive where piracy plays into this (though one of the threads did mention having found a link to the entire issue, and subsequently reading it). Perhaps it's merely the fact that mods have not locked down on discussions of that sort -- where piracy is brought up or implied -- on the basis that the book is not out yet (same way you're not supposed to update the wiki even if you have a legitimate advanced copy). Looks like we won't know until tomorrow, though, what with the blackout and all :P

I love it... People steal comics, spoil it for people willing to buy them, and then make threads to bitch about it being garbage. What a bunch of shitty people......

My thoughts on this type of piracy is that if the original creators and contributors or at least some of them are still alive and collecting royalties then piracy is bad. If all the people who actually took part in the thing being produced are dead then I don't care.

This was exactly what I meant. It started with people tweeting Snyder yesterday with things like "I'm so glad I didn't pay for that" and soon enough there was blogs and links to leaked copies and online scans all over twitter and tumblr, and then I came on here and saw the same thread that saw about a scan review, which contained comments like "I only pirated it because I wanted to read it right away, and wouldn't have time tomorrow" and realised it wasn't a day for me to be on the internet lol.

If you don't buy the book, or in some way invest in a book, be it borrow it, buy it, share it you have no right to comment on it. This is a very broad, fallible statement, but if you're not investing in it, you're not a fan.

Likewise, if you're stealing because you can't wait for it, you're not a fan. Regardless as to why you're stealing it, you're still stealing it. You may think it's a passionate act of crime, but you're damaging the very thing you claim to care about. If you really cared, you could wait 24-48 hours to read it? You're time's not THAT important, no matter who you are.

I can see why that'd be seen as more "ethical" theft. My only disagreement with it, would be that you're still empowering the people who scan the books and publish the pirated content, and they're likely the same people pirating the current content, and you're still giving them a hi-5 and still adding views and downloads to their website/blog stats and still increasing their popularity and justifying what they do. You're still, albeit less directly, assisting the people sharing the current stolen content.

A classic example: I wanted to read Action Comics #1. You could argue that it'd cost you $1.5-2.5 million, to get a copy, like it has in auctions...this would justify getting a scan right? Everybody is dead and I don't have $2million...steal it? Well, I put some thought into it, and I got mine for around $5 when I bought the millenium edition re-print that was released a few years back, they've reprinted it a few times, like they do with most classics...I'm pretty sure it was going for $1 to download on DC and comixology recently too.

@Manbehindthewires: I'm not saying its right just saying it doesn't bother me if the multi billion dollar corporation loses 5 bucks here and there. I don't pirate comics aside from some old public domain stuff that's free any way.

@joshmightbe: it's rarely about the multibillion dollar corporation for me. I have as many issues with policy and licensing as I do with the piracy around it. Like I said, it's about the communal harm it causes, more than the $5.

haha If the one good thing to come from piracy is this joke...I may have to forgive the pirates :p

@Manbehindthewires: That all depends on your view on spoilers honestly. I don't personally worry too much about them since you can never be quite sure it they're true until you see it for yourself. Tho I am openly advocating that if people have to read Superior Spider Man go ahead and steal that cause no one should be rewarded for that.

@joshmightbe: I don't really mind spoilers, with a couple of exceptions, but I'm aware that others are, so I block spoilers in my write-ups. If you think that other people aren't worth that extra 1 click and 5 seconds of consideration there's no hope for you. Additionally, spoilers are one thing; the build up and hype and excitement and single communal consciousness towards a character or book are another. If you think that's worth sacrificing for the sake of a few people who think they're entitled to a free/early copy, may I suggest stealing something less destructive to a greater good...try poaching fish or something, you might like it.

Can only assume you're trolling with the superior comment...

@Manbehindthewires: You kind of weaken you're point by saying you don't care about people pirating other stuff as much. Basically, you're saying this affects me more so I care about it and it is somehow more wrong then when it doesn't affect me.

@Captain_Yesterday: all I said was if you;re going to inconvenience people, and are unwilling to change, then please choose a hobby that inconveniences less people. Was merely a sidenote, and a playful one at that. Nothing to do with what I like, more to do with destructive potential. Baby steps lol.
