My 10 Least Favourite Comic Book Characters

I figured it was time I made something to show which comic book characters I strongly dislike. And cue the controversy...

List items

  • Seriously what happened to this guy? He went from the good natured field leader of the X-Men to a twice cuckold who created a team of killers, encouraged a child to take the life of another for 'the greater good' and has generally hindered the cause for mutant equality rather than helped it. Oh and he's just succumbed to the Phoenix Force and killed Charles Xavier. Whatever went wrong with Scott Summers?

  • I absolutely detest Superior Spider-Man and I hate that Otto is being rewarded by Slott since he can relate to the tubby guy with social issues lashing out as a sociopathic anti hero. Octavious was once one of my favourite villains but now he's become something I despise greatly for ruining the mythology of Spider-Man.

  • His blazen lack of morals and lack to change his ways has completely put me off Frank Castle. Other characters have sought redemption and a better way of living but Frank keeps spiralling down a self destructive path where nothing good can come of it. That may be the appealing thing about the Punisher but not to me it isn't.

  • A real witch (can't use the word I want to use). She's a spiteful, deceitful character who has yet to redeem herself by siding with the X-Men. In fact some of the worst things she's done (cough adultery cough) have been whilst she was an X-Man. Emma and Scott make for a complementary couple and one I can despise easily.

  • It's the Storm fans on here that have put me off this character. It's seriously bugged me about the inane questions asked about Storm on here. Ororo is an alright character but as far as the fanboys/fangirls go for Storm, they do a lot to put me off this character.

  • I'm really hoping she doesn't show up ever again after AvX. She's acted irresponsibly ever since coming to the present and didn't adjust well enough to being the 'mutant messiah' Now all this trouble has come about as a result of it. Typical troublesome, stuck up teenager.

  • This guy is a whiny idiotic character who possesses an unruly child's personality. His character, actions and unreliable powers make him a pathetic excuse for a comic book character.

  • Completely redundant and pointless. Didn't add anything to her possibly being the Riddler's daughter nor did she have a colourful personality. A complete waste of time was spent on her during Tony Daniel's Pre New 52 run on Batman.

  • The Marvel equivalent of Chuck Norris. Seriously how do squirrel powers help someone beat Dr Doom, let alone frickin' Thanos? This character is so darn annyoing not just in the comics itself (Who in their right minds would let Squirrel Girl be a nanny) but also the result of her PIS feats on battle forums across the Internet. And for that, Squirrel Girl deserves to be on here.

  • This character is on here more for his Young Justice role rather than anything but seriously, listen to what the guy says and how he says it. You can't help but hate him for the drivel and manipulation he puts into every word he says. Particularly when he plays a chatshow host type of role. In that role, he represents a lot of things wrong with modern society today.

@TheAcidSkull: I don't see what's cool about him. He's just a black Peter Parker in high school. There's nothing different or unique about his personality which made me even want to quickly check up on his adventures.

@TheAcidSkull: Exactly my point. Near the same origin with some different powers thrown in too. Nothing original about that.

It takes some guts to make this kind of list. I commend you.

Cyclops should be on everyone's "least favorites" list.

@PowerHerc: Not really lol. I just wanted to show which characters I dislike the most. Everyone has their own. And agreed, Cyclops has turned into a character you can't help but hate. Why people still support him I have no idea.

I thought I'd return the favor :)

The only two that I disagree from this list would be Cyclops (naturally) and Emma Frost. But you do give very good reasons for their places; that I more or less agree with. Post-Messiah Complex Cyclops has been reduced to a self-destructive sociopath, turned into a sacrificial pariah to make Wolverine look like the hero. Honestly, after AvX, I barely even recognize the character. And I miss the snarky but still sympathetic Frost from Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men run. Nearly every other iteration of the character has been too much of the snark and not enough of the heart.

But aside from those two, I agree with Squirrel Girl, Hope, Superboy-Prime (all annoying), Storm (annoying fandom), and Miles Morales (meh). I can see your viewpoint on Punisher, though I can't really say much beyond that since I've never read mainstream Punisher - only Garth Ennis' MAX version. Never heard of Arion or Enigma, though.

Overall, great list!

@Veshark: Thanks for the comment and recommendation! Scott fans have given me good reasons for their liking the character. It's just that the mistakes he's made put him down a lot in my eyes. Emma could well do with some sympathy to make her more likeable. And don't worry about not hearing of Enigma. It's probably for the best. But Arion's made a few appearances in his time for DC. Anyway thanks for the recommendation and comment! :)

No problem! And yeah, definitely, there's a lot of writing out there that really made Cyclops worse. His present mutant revolutionary shtick makes the character near-unrecognizable to me now. Haha, I'll keep that in mind.

Miles Morale....I have never read a single comic of Ultimate Marvel, to be honest; I have absolutely no interest in it, especially after reading about what Ultimatum did to it. So I can't comment on that. But I think Bendis is an OK dude.

And I'm guessing the word you want to use for Emma Frost is "b*tch". I agree - she is a terrible character.

Never read a comic about Squirrel Girl, never will. All the hatedom for her's turned me off. The idea of a Silver Age character trapped in the Modern Age sounds good on paper, but apparently it was done...wrong, to say the least.

I noticed all but two characters here are Marvel - guess Marvel makes more annoying and unlikable characters than DC. Or maybe there's much more DC characters for #11 and beyond.

@CaptainLantern76: Guy Gardner was on here but I bumped him down. I guess Marvel do make more unlikeable characters than DC at least from my perspective anyway. And I haven't considered other publishers' characters either.

@Lvenger: Yeah, Guy Gardner did become more likable. I am surprised to see the Punisher so high, though - he is different and you mentioned why that's bad, but I think he's an OK character, but he is hpyocritical - he's no better than the people he hunts down. I bet his family would be ashamed - and if DC and Marvel did another crossover, which probably won't happen for a long time, I would like to see Superman or Barry Allen call out Punisher and tell him he's no better than the criminals he wages war against.

@CaptainLantern76: Batman does that in one of the Batman/Punisher crossovers I think. That's better than the previous one where Jean Paul Valley and Punisher team up in a crossover.

@Lvenger: There was a crossover between Punisher and Jean Paul Valley? Given what I've researched about Jean Paul Valley (I was not alive when he was Batman, as you know), and given what Punisher's like...how would that have worked and not be a awful piece of sh*t? And still, I would love to see Supes or Barry call Punisher's bluff and give him a detailed speech about why he's the very thing he hunts and that his family would be ashamed.

@z3ro180: How so? Slott desecrates Peter's character in the first 9 issues, especially issue 9 where Peter tries to stop Ock from saving a little girl's life because it would reveal his presence. How is that not a ruin on what the character stands for? What's more, the very notion of the series is flawed because Ock is being rewarded for being who he is in Slott's little fan fic project. There's loads of things wrong with the characters, the plot and everything about Superior yet few people actually see this.

@earthquake_2123: You may think differently from me once you read into it because even now, some people are still willing to defend Scott's actions even though they're utterly reprehensible. From my POV, Cyclops has gone tumbling down a rabbit hole he can't get out of in his actions.

Your list is most interesting, especially concerning Storm and Squirrel Girl. Storm is a unique character, in that I seem to be a rare fan that is neutral towards her. Most Marvel fans either love her or hate her. As for Squirrel Girl, I don't really know much about her, except that she is extremely popular with Marvel's fans. Why I do not know, but there must be some reason why she is rated so highly?

No it's not in the slightest. It's because these characters have major flaws in my eyes that makes them completely unappealing to my interest.

I like how you never gave an explanation for Sentry lol. Funnily enough, the only time I liked him was in Siege where he never opened his mouth (which all the Sentry fans hated.) Otherwise he's generally cringeworthy.

@burningmartian: I think I meant to but then I was busy with coursework and stuff so it slipped my mind. Simply put, there are two main reasons why I cannot stand Sentry. First, his character and depiction under Bendis was atrocious, if there was any potential in the way Jenkins wrote him, Bendis snuffed it out by writing one of the most deadbeat, weak willed and easily manipulated characters for the sake of either solving a story, creating conflict or making a villain out of Sentry/Void. The dynamic is just awful. Secondly, the battle boards Sentry is my most disliked character on the forums. Between the stable Sentry fallacy, the exaggerated planet busting feat with Photon (that was more down to Photon), Void's feats being attributed to Sentry and that goddamn Molecule Man nonsense never fails to rile me up when I see someone defend it.

@lvenger: Well I for one didn't see any appeal in Jenkins' depiction either. It was basically a slap in the face of all other marvel characters with actual well wrought history. Suddenly golden boy shows up and apparently he is the sun that Marvel earth revolves around. Oh, and he moonlights as a mass murderer, in case we were missing any aspect of distilled wish fulfillment that is the Sentry. His second solo series actually made me laugh as to how painfully bad it was. Apparently, his supporting cast (wife) has no redeeming qualities either.

As for his battle forum feats, it's 80 percent hyperbole, some off-panel "totally legit" feats with a large order of Bendis induced stupidity. I can totally imagine his thought process while writing that; "This Owen dude is pretty strong right? Probably not as strong as Sentry though, right? Right!" Then he completes his script, rams a mountain dew and sends it off for publishing.

Great list btw, this is one of the lists I agree with 100 percent.

@burningmartian: That's why I never could like Jenkins' Sentry either, trying to make the character simultaneously a golden hero and his own worst enemy just didn't work at all. His supporting cast is totally Superman ripped off as well, Cloc and his dog are absolute Krypto/Fortress rip offs.

Bendis is notoriously inconsistent with depicting fights and feats, and Sentry's mainly where he got that reputation from. Molecule Man's jobbing is a huge indication of a lack of research on Bendis' part. Hickman's run had Owen serve as the conduit for channelling the Beyonder's power into someone yet he lost to Sentry and couldn't stop Bob's inexperienced use of molecular powers? That makes no sense,.

Thanks :)
