New Info on the Dragon Ball Z Movie

Come one come all Dragon ball Z fans for I have an update for you on the new movie. From Weekly Shonen Jump comes some new information on the new Dragon Ball movie! Here's some general information:

"Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (ドラゴンボールZ 神と神, Doragon Bōru Zetto: Shin to Kami; lit. "Dragon Ball Z: God and God") is the 14th Dragon Ball Z movie. It will premiere in Japanese theaters on March 30, 2013. It is the first Dragon Ball movie in 17 years to have a theatrical release, the last being the tenth anniversary movie Dragon Ball: The Path to Power in 1996, which followed the first three Dragon Ball films and the thirteen Dragon Ball Z films."

And here's its plot:

"The film is set during the 10-year time period between the defeat of Kid Buu and the 28th World Martial Arts Tournamentlike Wrath of the Dragon and Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!! Goku,Gohan, Piccolo, Krillin, Goten, Trunks, Vegeta, and Shenron appear on the first promotional arts for the movie. Along with Goku and Vegeta, the three members of the Pilaf Gang are among the figures produced in conjunction with the 2013 movie. The film poster displays Super Saiyan Goku combating a purple cat-like humanoid donning Egyptian-looking garb, with a Kaioshin-looking characterholding a scepter and showered in light floating in the background. Mr. Satan, Mr. Buu, Videl, the shrunken Pilaf Gang, Super Saiyan Goten, Super Saiyan Gohan, Super Saiyan Vegeta, Super Saiyan Trunks, Bulma, Piccolo, Tien Shinhan, Krillin, Yamcha and Puaralso appear on the film poster."

Here's the poster in question

And its tagline

And its release date

Well how about this? A Dragon Ball Z film getting a cinematic release for the first time in 17 years. The name "Battle of Gods" implies something of epic scale given the godlike powers of Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Goten, Trunks and Piccolo. It seems as if the film is taking some inspiration from Egyptian mythology as well given the Egyptian dressing of that strange purple cat and the mystical, sorcerer in the background. My guess is that he'll be summoning this strange cat god for some neafarious end leading to the Z Fighters getting involved. Hopefully the cat god will get a chance to fight everyone before Goku beats it like usual. The only problem is that there's no news on a US or European release date. Although the DBZ movies do take some time getting translated into English so that's a bummer :(

So what do you DBZ fans think? Do you like the look of what you see here? Or are you disappointed with the latest DBZ movie's appearence so far? Be sure to comment below and let the speculation begin!

So excited for this movie the legend himself is helping with the movie. I just hope Vegeta gets some good spotlight and none of the other crap where he usually gets beat on.

Posted by Lvenger

@PlasticBag: Yeah he always gets the short stick in DBZ film fights. He needs to go back to being the badass manga/anime Vegeta. And why is Gohan a Super Saiyan anyway? He can transform into a mystic form that's more powerful than any Super Saiyan transformation. Ah well I love the Egyptian mythology theme this movie is taking. Can't wait for more info!

When I saw this thread I thought they were making a sequel to that live action bs they made. Crisis averted. This sounds interesting tho.

Apologies for scaring you like that :P It does seem interesting but the only concern is when the film will get translated into English. DBZ films do tend to take a time to get translated into English. And they had better get the Funimation voice cast to reprise their roles or else I won't be happy!

Damn. I was hoping this movie would take place BEFORE a crapload of Super Saiyans ruined DBZ.

Posted by Kal'smahboi

Are they releasing on Easter weekend?

Posted by Funrush

Yeah, I hope Funi dubs it. We still haven't gotten the '08 special though, so I'm not holding my breath.

GOKU VS THE EASTER BUNNY

....although its a cat

@Lvenger: Gohan lost his mystic powers that's why in GT he started using SS again so he probably already lost it. And yea Vegeta better whoop some Egyptian a$$. Also I forgot his name but the original creator of DBZ is creating this film or at least taking part in it so you know it will be good!

@BiteMe-Fanboy: What was wrong with Super Saiyans? They worked perfectly fine in the Android/Cell Saga. It was the Buu Saga where things went downhill.

@Kal'smahboi: They're releasing it March 30th 2013 in Japan. No word on when the American/European release might be

@Funrush: Oh yeah. And they didn't dub the redone special on Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2. Why you so behind Funimation?

@Squalleon: Lol. Someone thought it was Anubis, the guardian of the dead but Anubis has the head of a dog so I don't know who the cat is.

@PlasticBag: Well that's annoying. And Akira Toriyama is the name you're looking for. So it should be a great endeavour!

Super Saiyan was always something that seemed impossible to achieve in the early DBZ, it was almost to the point of just being a myth. When Goku finally achieved it it was pretty damn awesome. It was almost a dream that Goku achieved that enabled him to defeat Frieza.

Then Future Trunks popped up as a SS, okay, another one, that's cool I guess.

Vegeta becomes one after thinking he was a SS the whole time he got his ass kicked by Frieza. Okay... he IS the Prince of Saiyans. That's okay, I reckon.

Gohan becomes one. Hmm.. Ooookaaay. Another Half saiyan achieved the once seemingly impossible dream.

Then it gets all crazy. Goten and Trunks become SS. Kids. Kids that are more powerful than Goku was at their age and aren't even HALF saiyan. Strong enough to defeat the once undefeated Frieza easily. It gets retarded and the whole significance of the Super Saiyan gets thrown out the window quick.. and all the other character we grown to love (Piccolo, Krillin, Tien, Yamcha) get thrown to the side and don't even matter anymore. All we see now is gold hair flying all over the place and kicking ass.

Though I agree that the Cell Saga is a pretty good saga, DBZ should have ended with Frieza's death and Goku's sacrifice to achieve that. Would have made the series 10x better.

Yeah but the action and fights that were gained from more Super Saiyans made for more intense fight scenes. Plus Trunks was an interesting character and Piccolo didn't get shoved to the side until after his fight with Andoid 17. As for the others, they're only human. Very powerful humans but humans all the same. Of course they'll be surpassed by the Saiyans, Namekians, androids and whatever species Frieza is in the saga.

And then your second to last paragraph I agree with. Trunks and Goten made the concept of a Super Saiyan ridiculous. Even Vegeta said so. Finally I have to disagree with you on the last paragraph. The series worked better with Goku's sacrifice in the Cell saga. That's where Kai ended and I think that was a much better place to finish than ending at the Frieza saga. The Cell Saga was a much more natural place to end than the Frieza saga IMO. Though with all the deaths at the end of the sagas, Toriyama was always trying to end DBZ but couldn't because of its popularity.

I reckon. I do enjoy Cell Saga, though. It's a pretty good storyline and I like how they sort of brought back the Red Ribbon Army. The whole Goku having a heart attack thing was silly, but overall it was a good saga.

Well it does make some pseudo sense. I mean with all the cholesterol he eats and unhealty diet, it was only a matter of time before his heart started having some problems :P

GT is non canon. Really hope the movie doesn't try to induct it though, with Super Saiyan Gohan back... we'll see.

This looks like crap, unfortunately.

If they make GT canon, I will officially throw DBZ out the window as "terrible". Or I will proclaim the movie non-canon. Either way.

Goku vs Anubis

Posted by Lvenger

@Supreme Marvel: Yeah that's what I'm worried about.

@nickzambuto: No it wasn't. Just the Japanese release date. But hopefully an English, especially a Funimation dub will be announced at some point.

@minigunman123: Ah come on it doesn't look that bad. The Egyptian Cat and sorcerer look cool IMO. And it takes place in between the end of the Buu Saga and the World Tournament 7 years later so it comes before GT

@SandMan_: That's what everyone's predicting. But why does Anubis have a cat head rather than a dog head?

I don't think it was stated. But it's only safe to assume he lost it maybe one he was swallowed up by Buu it took all his mystic powers like how it dispelled the Vegito fusion.

That's a good explanation for it. Though in Wrath of the Dragon Gohan used his ultimate form. However, DBZ movies aren't necessarily canon to main continuity. Most of them don't even fit into the DBZ timeline.

Posted by PlasticBag

@Lvenger: Was it made by the same man making this new movie?

Posted by Lvenger

@PlasticBag: No I don't believe so. Toriyama didn't have any involvement in that film.

Posted by PlasticBag

@Lvenger: See whatever he is involved in is canon but whenever it's someone else it's usually not canon not sure if that is official or not but that's how I see it.

If it was never stated in the series, then I'm pretty sure he still has the ability to go into his Ultimate form; just because he never used it again doesn't mean he can't reach that transformation, it just means he never used it again for whatever reason. Plus just like Lvenger mentioned, he did use the form in Warth of the Dragon, so he can still obviously reach the form. But I don't see how being absorbed by Buu would cause Gohan from being able to reach that form again, even though yes it did separate Goku and Vegeta while they were fused, it was never stated that they couldn't just grab another pair of ear rings and fuse again.

Plus after Goku and Vegeta freed Gohan, Piccolo, Goten and Trunks from Buu, he still appeared to be in his ultimate form and continued to be in his ultimate form until the very end of the Buu Saga and DBZ itself. I guess he can still reach that level though why he's a Super Saiyan in the poster I don't know.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but even though he can reach his Ultimate form, isn't he still able to go into both his Super Saiyan and SS2 forms if he wanted to?

I never saw Dragonball: Evolution. That looked awful.

But this looks promising. Looks like I'll going to the theaters for a non-superhero move after all.

That looks so awesome! Although the enemy looks like an Egyptian god mixed with an Easter bunny.

I saw this a few days ago. This makes me happy I just hope they make a dubbed version. Cant watch DBZ when its not Dubbed.

Posted by Lvenger

@War Killer: Yeah. But Mystic Gohan is more powerful than any Super Saiyan transformation.

@JamesKM716: Definitely Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan

@CaptainLantern76: Glad you like the look of it!

@Xanni15: I think Dragon Ball needs a break from live action until they get the formula right.

@YourNeighborhoodComicGeek: Lol too true. Though people think it's Anubis. But why Anubis has a cat head rather than a dog head I don't know.

@SavageDragon: YOU SAW IT???!!! What was it like? Was it good?

@Lvenger: That was incredibly good. I also love Fusion Reborn.

and despite not liking the entire movie, i love the part in Bojack Unbound, where Goku breaks ever law ever and punches Bojack. That was great.

@JamesKM716: Yeah Goku defying death (again) was an awesome scene. Though how did Bojack know it was Goku? Fusion Reborn had some great fights in it and I liked Vegeta and Goku's dynamic in the film.

It's one of my favorite scenes from a DBZ movie period.

And it's been a while since i've seen this movie, but if i remember right, Bojack goes something like, "that was Goku?"

And he'd heard of him because Goku killed King Kai indirectly, which is what set Bojack free.

But it's been a while, so i could be wrong.

My only real problem with Fusion Reborn was Janemba's design. The first form wasn't that cool, and the second form wasn't that intimidating. I woulda prefereded a darker clolor than purple.
