@the_stegman: The thing, though, is that Godzilla was boring because it tried too hard to have a plot. Cloverfield has almost no plot at all. We don't even know where the monster came from or what its motives were. And we don't know if Rob & Beth survived.
Cloverfield's bad parts: Hud, the guy filming everything, was really annoying for most of the movie. It drove me crazy that the movie kept cutting back to random times of romance during the day. Also, the whole movie just had an atmosphere of darkness. (Figuratively speaking).
Cloverfield's good parts: It's quite suspenseful. The military vs monster scene was pretty cool.
Godzilla's bad parts: It was really boring, got too much hype, and had too much to do with the mutos.
Godzilla's good parts: Better special effects, better action sequences, and more likable characters. (Even if they are cardboard cut-outs).
