Early Life
Hanzo Kenshin was the Grandmaster of a Ninja clan in Kōka, Japan during the time period that would appropriately be called The Age of the Warrior(1400-1600). He was a man of tremendous strength and conviction, training his students to be elite assassins, more commonly known as Shinobi. In his travels, Hanzo came across an unusual box, one he was told would allow him and his followers to become one with the shadow. Although he found that upon opening the box, the power within was too much for him to handle. So he locked it away, hoping a worthy Heir would be capable of controlling such power.
Not long after this, Hanzo found a foreign woman, one who was the survivor from a sunken English freighter. Although they could not speak the same language at first, he felt there was something special about this woman. Eventually they would marry, and have a son named Oroku. Hanzo hoped that he would be a worthy heir, one who could take his place as Grandmaster.
From when he could first walk, Oroku trained vigorously in order to become the perfect assassin. Just because he was the Grandmaster's son, did not mean he would be given any kind of special treatment. In fact, he had to train even harder than the rest of his peers. If he was to become his father's heir, he needed to prove himself. And eventually, he did.
When Oroku was Twenty years old, his father gave him the mysterious box, though he warned him that it's power was something he should only try to access if it was absolutely necessary. He would now become Grandmaster upon his father's death. In time Oroku also found a wife, her name was Tatsu.
Gandmaster
Now that he was Grandmaster, Oroku had the might of thousands of Ninja Warriors at his command. They where a successful clan of assassins, being hired in some of the most crucial conflicts at the time. Though this notoriety would be gift, it was also a curse, for the clan's days had become numbered. Fed up with the various Ninja clans across the land, Oda Nobunaga set out to destroy them.
Hearing word of the many different clans being wiped out, Oroku new that now was the time for him to harness the power within the box. What he didn't know was that the power was something that would take many years to be able to control. Upon opening the box, what looked like a large portal opened up to him. As he walked closer to it, it quickly pulled him in and sealed itself behind him.
The Void
There he stood, in the darkness, all alone. Smoke swirled in front of him, and a man speared. This man told him of the Way of the Shadow, and that in order to use this power, he would need to spend eons of time in The Void.
Understanding what he needed to do, Oroku accepted the man's offer. At once, a strange energy with varying shades of purple, as well as black surrounded him. He could feel the power surging through him, though he did not know how to use it. He spent much time learning from the strange man how to use the power of the Shadows. And in the time he wasn't learning, he wandered the void.
The Void was a strange place, existing neither in our universe or the next. It seemed almost as if time had no effect on this place, and thus had no effect on him. He longed to go home and see his wife again, but he knew that what he was doing would give him the power to save not only her, but the rest of his students. At least, that's what he thought would happen.
When he finally got to the point where his new master had taught him all that he could learn, Oroku was told now was the time for his return to our realm. And the portal was opened before him. Before leaving, though, Oroku asked the strange man what his name was. His response? Hanzo......
Startled at this revelation Oroku's mind raced. How could he not have noticed? What kind of world was this? Why would his own father not tell him of his true identity sooner?
Before he could ask his father any of these questions, Hanzo told him,"The reason you came here will not be the reason for why you leave. You hold the key to saving much more than our family's legacy...You hold the power to save lives far off into the future. Our way of life was one of honor, but also injustice. You must atone for my mistakes son. You must right my wrongs...and you must become something more than just a man.... Goodbye my son."
At that, he was pulled into the portal....
Man Out of Time
When he emerged from the portal, Oroku found the world he left was far different. He had reappeared inside of the ruins of what was once his clan's great temple. Now all it was, was ruble and bones....
Devastated at what his clan had become, Oroku gave out an angry yell, and wept bitterly. The very reason he left, was now gone. But not only that, the world he left was changed. His very way of life no longer held any meaning to this world besides myths and legends.
In time, he was able to gather himself together. He sat down and meditated on what his father told him before he left he Void. "The reason you came here will not be the reason for why you leave." What did this mean? "You hold the power to save lives far off into the future." Save lives?
"Perhaps that is what I will do, but my decisions are my own. And if I'm going to do this, it's going to be my way. But if I am to save lives, I must wander, and find purpose.....I promise you father, wherever you are in the Void, I will not fail you, but not only that, I will not fail this world. And perhaps someday, our family will be reunited yet again....."
So from there he set out, to seek out injustice, and right his father's wrongs. Wandering from one place to the next. Oroku would become something more than just a man...he would become The Living Shadow....
