17 Favorite Marvel characters

Overall Marvel

This list only takes into account my tastes and personal preferences. No other rationale is used, so please, nobody tell me "X" character should be in it or whatever.

List items

  • Cyclops has always been my favorite character ever since way back when in the 90's X-Men cartoon. He might not be written very well in his latest event, but he's one of the few comic book characters to actually grow and evolve and easily one of the top three leaders in all of comicdom. He can blow entire mountains apart by staring at them, beat 6 attackers with his eyes closed simultaneously and outsmart a man who can read his every thought. He is the kind of man who isn't a seller for the masses but does the right thing even if it doesn't get him any popularity points. He defines X-Man.

  • A note here, Thor actually shares number 1 spot with Cyke, but CV doesn't have that feature. Thor defines epic in so many levels it's not funny. As a man in love with myths, legends and history, Thor is a no brainer for me. Thor: the Mighty, Thor: the Brave, he can easily lay claim to being Marvel's most powerful, this guy makes me feel manly just from staring at him.

  • The Immortal Iron Fist. I'm a Kung Fu cat myself, so, you see, Iron Fist is a given. Completely won me over with the Immortal Iron Fist series. This is THE man when talking about martial arts expertise and skill. He can go from going toe to toe with people like Cap or Bats to at any given time bringing the Helicarrier down in one strike of outpunching a nuclear blast.Yes, there may be others around (Gamora or Mantis come to mind) but no one does it like Danny boy.

  • A very underrated guy, this is the world's top marksman. Green Arrow might have come first, but it was Clint who took the scene by being an in-your-face jerk with a heart of gold. Hardworking, noble, headstrong, with a quiver full of arrows that have brought down the likes of Abomination and Krona and skills that have defeated entire superpowered teams. This man is not only the greatest marksman, but also a consummated martial artist and incredible leader.

  • First off, I'm Mexican, living in Mexico and never having been to the U.S, but this man makes me stand straight up. A born leader and everything that man can ever hope to be, Cap represents a dream we can all strive for, regardless of nationality. Thrown in his martial arts badassery, his unbreakable shield and overall awesomeness and Cap is a must-have in every favorite list. "No, you move".

  • The Guardian Devil, DD is truly an inspiration. Again, a martial arts powerhouse who can disable Wolverine with a flick of his finger, he also happens to be completely blind. He's down on his luck a lot of the time and has gone through more than most heroes and still remains a hardworking son of a prize fighter who takes his perceives disadvantages and beats you over the head with them. You might be a hulking brute capable of lifting an oil tanker, it doesn't matter. Daredevil will bring you down.

  • You probably don't even know this guy, but he's the last in a tradition of heroism dating back to WWI and to quite possibly the first costumed hero in the Marvel U. A slightly superhuman, blue collar Brit, Joe Chapman hunts the night for Vampires and other threats to the commonwealth, and does it from the little man's POV. His rich story, background (of the identity) and sheer potential (this guy deflects bullets with his knife and pulls a Batman on any superpowered being he encounters) made me fall in the love with the character.

  • My favorite woman in the Marvel U, Jean has been dead for quite some time. She's universally known as quite possibly the most powerful character in this universe, being the White Phoenix of the Crown and all, but I fell in love with her as a charming teen when she was just starting her X-Years. For some reason she always seemed incredibly real and three-dimensional, we've seen her go from cute girl to passionate woman to fierce lover to cosmic entity. She will always be my Marvel Girl.

  • Quite possibly one of the best written characters out there who also happens to always be lacking in the spotlight. Beast is a beautiful dychotomy, a brilliant mind encased in a savage body. He can win nobel prizes with the same ease he can lift tanks and perform incredible acrobatic feats. It is his humour in the face of adversity, his optimism, his literacy and loyalty what makes me love this character. That's also why I hate how he's been written lately...

  • The best villain is the one you can't really condemn, the one you can't help but being drawn to. Magnus has come close many times to turning into what he hates the most but he's seen the light several times and is currently fighting the good fight still. One of the most powerful mutants out there who can and has laid waste to entire rosters of Avengers and X-Men alike, Magnus is a great character.

  • I fell in love with the 90's cartoon version of the character: a happy, laid back yet tragic Southern Belle who also just happened to be the "Superman" of the team. Rogue has always been a perfect embodiment of the mutant curse, though not so much as of late. Her growth from a villain to a confused teen to a hero in probation, to an invaluable team member, to team leader and so on and so forth makes her a very rich character. She's definitely a tough girl all around and what is better than a lovable southern tomboy?

  • A british woman, brother to Captain Britain and remarkable X-Man, she is the living embodiment of grace and elegance. She is also an incredibly powerful Omega mutant in the telepathic/telekinetic field and a lethal martial artist.

  • Marvel's number one superhero had to be here somewhere. Maybe I'm not as crazy about Spidey as I was as a kid, but I will always appreciate this character and the lessons he's taught me about responsability and not giving up. I really don't think Spider-man needs any justification.

  • A truly strong woman, this a character who became a superhero by accident, was robbed of her identity and powers, gained even greater powers, was betrayed by her teammates, became an alcoholic, but managed to put herself back together. Then she worked hard to become the hero she was always meant to be, a true icon, and did it. A powerhouse, even more so in his binary form, Carol is a strong, fun character.

  • The original anti-hero, Namor is the King of Atlantis and technically the first ever Marvel hero along with the original Human Torch. This is a man who has knocked Hulk unconscious several times over and has an ego to match his strength.

  • Hercules is the original super hero. Period. I'm not even talking about just the Marvel U, so it follows that the film-inspired Marvel version should have a spot here. His strength is legendary, or at least was, and his modern characterization as boisterous, hilarious, yet noble, wise and kind bruiser is simply endearing. You can't help but thinking of Herc as your bro, really.

  • Stark to me represents the ultimate expression of the power of Mankind. We humans are very weak and fragile when compared to other animals. It is our intelligence, our skill in creating tools and weapons and technology what has seen us throughout our history. Tony, a frail man, becomes someone capable of trading blows with Gods by using the suit of advanced armor that he himself developed using his brilliant mind. Not only that, he's a complex character that has had his share of demons and failures but continues fighting the good fight.
