New Xbox and Playstation both Anti-Used Games......

With reports that both the new Playstation and Xbox won't play used games, begs to ask. Is the video game industry really getting that greedy? I feel like most games are overpriced these days. With all the nickel and dimming developers are starting to do with micro-transactions. Buying full priced games, only to find out that you have to buy DLC to finish most of the main story. It's being reported that the new Xbox will require you to be online 24/7. Didn't Diablo 3 fail at this? Also, reporting that new Xbox games will come with a one time activation code. I have been a gamer for years. It's becoming a sad industry. Do they even care about the customers even more? What about all the jobs that will be lost? GameStop, Gamefly, and etc. Will the price of games go up? They have risen with each generation by 12% This would bring the total cost of a game around $71 dollars. We are worried about consoles being over priced. Game prices are the reason many people buy used. What are your opinions..

Rest in Peace Console Gaming.

What the Hell is wrong with buying pre-owned games? I thought that was just a stupid decision made by EA and Activision, but Microsoft and Sony themselves are jumping on?! If that's so I might have to get a Wii U...

Posted by mikethekiller

They won't do it. It'd be the end of console gaming if they did.

Posted by danhimself

the problem is that when you buy a used game you're not giving your money to the developers and they don't like that

all they need to do is work out a deal with Gamestop so that whenever they sell a used game the developers get a small percentage of the sale

my problem with used games is that only Gamestop is making a profit off of it....whenever you trade in a game you get next to nothing for it and they quadruple that price to resell it....I traded in a bunch of games once and I will never make that mistake again...I'd rather be broke and replay the same game for the tenth time than get 4 bucks for a $65 game

They don't have the FIREBALLS to do something that stupid..................I'll keep my 360, or switch to PC gaming full time......I'm not kidding.lol

Unless of any of those sources cite Microsoft/Sony directly confirming this, i'm calling BS.

Posted by TheSheepHerder

It won't happen. And to add to that there is absolutely nothing from Microsoft, Sony or any reliable source that confirms this. Everything being sold digitally, no used games and an always-online policy would be a financial disaster for both companies.

Posted by Aiden Cross

I doubt they'll do this, they would lose a lot of customers.

Posted by Xanni15

More reason to stay with my SNES, N64, Gamecube, and Gameboy handhelds.

Posted by Glitch_Spawn

If this is actually done I might never buy another next GEN console. The 360 (and PS3) are the epitome of what a really good gaming console should be anyway.

Freaking BS is what it is. It's just to get more buyers, then turning around and spitting in fans' face.

I sure well hope your right.

That makes no sense. This tactic would drive buyers away, not entice more.

@_Zombie_:

No, what I meant was lying about being backwards compatible, ride the initial buyer craze, then let people figure out that you can't play older generation games.

And no full refunds, if any.

I been hearing about this for weeks. I still don't believe it... just how will the CD stop working on other consoles? Is it like a Virgin CD that once its played all other consoles can tell.

@Necrotic_Lycanthrope: Except if you're suggesting fans would be falling for this.. i beg to differ. Every post i've seen about this is people hysterically buying into what probably amounts to complete bullsht. So even if it was true, the fans would be too pissed to fall for it.

Have you seen the mob rush for apple products? Who's saying that something similar won't happen with consoles and console games?

It's quite easy. They'll just need to place an "need-online-registration-to-play" feature of the game like some do right now (e.g. Ubisoft games). It's being used as anti-piracy right now but I think it will be easy to tweak the issue and tailor it to their greedy needs.

Posted by nU_Kovak

I'll stick with the two consoles I have (PS2 and X Box 360) if this is legit.

Posted by _Zombie_

@Necrotic_Lycanthrope: Because the gaming community (the xbox community in particular) is full of assholes that are easily frightened? These rumors alone have them whipping up a shtstorm as is.

Posted by _Zombie_

It's a moot point, anyways. I still refuse to believe this is legitimate until presented with valid proof.

I am sick and tired of online game passes for non-subscription games. It's a stupid idea.

Posted by Necrotic_Lycanthrope

@_Zombie_:

Every single platform has those guys. Heck, you get the same kind of whiners on the Pokemon games for crying out loud.

Posted by _Zombie_

@Necrotic_Lycanthrope: That just reinforces my point, really.

Posted by FalconPuuunch

It wouldn't really be beneath them now would it? It has already been stated that playback won't be an option (meaning: you can't play current gen games on the next gen systems)

If this does happen, then I won't even bother. My PS3 works perfectly fine still and I still have the good ol' N64 if I want to mix things up.

Man, I really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really hope these rumors are just rumors. Words would not be able to describe the anger I would have towards the gigantic middle finger that these companies would be giving everybody.

Not that my anger means anything, but whatever.

i hate new age gaming i miss the GC,ps2 and xbox days those were the best.

now we have DLCs ya how about you finish the game before you release it!

There's just so many stupid rumors about the Orbis and Durango that you should take any 'news' from gaming sites about them with a grain of salt.

@_Zombie_: @TheSheepHerder: @ARMIV2: While I can't speak for the Xbox, it's not a rumor in regards to Sony, back in September they filed for a patent application which determines if a player has permission, based on the player's ID and the game's ID. Anyway here's the full article http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2013-01-03/sony-files-patent-for-tying-a-game-disc-to-specific-player

This. I'd be raging if we couldn't play older games on the newer consoles.

They shoot themselves in the foot if they do that.

Game prices really haven't gone up each and every year. During the PS2/Xbox years, they went down $10, then back up to $60. Just look at how much NBA Hangtime cost in 1996 here, and this was the tailend of the SNES days.

However, I'd kill to be able to buy another XBox 360 controller for $15

Secondly, game systems have gotten insanely pricey. I remember when SNES came out and cost $180, but came with Super Mario World. Systems, today, come out and cost upwards of $600 with no games.

Haters going to hate, I guess? :P

Posted by Edamame

Sounds pretty ridiculous. I don't even remember things being so complicated in the Nintendo 64 or Super Nintendo times. Those were the days.

Posted by _Zombie_

@redbird3rdboywonder: Filing for a patent doesn't mean they intend to use it. That just means they're reserving that idea in case they decide to use it.

Posted by _Zombie_

@Liko: Except doing this would hurt profits, not raise them. So saying they'd do it to get more money doesn't make sense.

Posted by redbird3rdboywonder

@_Zombie_: We'll just have to wait and see

These rumors have been circulating for months, until Microsoft/Sony say something, these rumors are BS and used to get page hits for gaming websites.

Also people who are saying that they'll switch to PC gaming makes me laugh, try buying the latest PC games used, PC used gaming market doesn't really exist.

That's because you generally don't need used games for PC. A lot of old games are available through Steam.

Edited by SavageDragon

I actually believe the rumors. It makes sense when you think about it. Developers are not getting money for used games they made. People claim it will be the death of console gaming...thats just A complete falicy. Everyones going to switch to PC and Tablet IOS games? No way in hell man. People will buy the overpriced consoles and the overpriced new games. Call of duty (new blackops) made over a billion dollars and continues to see more and more money. Grranted they are the biggest franchise with the exception of WOW and Starcraft but my point is that massive profits will still be made. People that claim this could kill games are not being realistic in my opinion. Your telling me when GTA 6 comes out on the next gen and is only available new, Rockstar wont make money because people want to wait for it used? Not gonna happen. Sure their could be losses for certain developers. Popularity of smaller titles without the clout of big name franchises will suffer, but concole gaming is huge. Its not going anywhere even if this does happen. I for one hate Gamestop so I dont really care about that company and have never used Gamefly. Hopefully this isnt true because I will occasionally trade in games and get totally ripped off by Gamestop (contributing to my dislike of them) and put it towards new games. I hope this doesnt happen but I actually expect it to.

If they do this it doesn't just have ramifications on those who play games but so many people will be out of jobs. I know that shops like GAME and CEX, here in the UK, rely on used games sales for a majority of their profits and without that then they'll very quickly become no more.

Exactly my point. They will be taking out the whole used game industry. A lot of games these days aren't even worth the 59.99 price tag. That is why I like to wait for the used game price to come way down.
