The Eidolon's struggling was a little more dramatic this time around, though Mason's primary concern was the window, "Great, I'm totally going to have to pay for that one...good job ghost boy..."

Mason leaped out the broken window and towards the Eidolon. He levied the bottom of the staff into the ground and cleared his throat; it was time for an incantation, "Ground on which I stand, grant me strength. Ground on which I stand, grant me bounty. Oh Earth, give unto myself an arm of stone and a fist of rock!"

The green light from one Mason's bands enveloped his fist. He winced as he felt his arm muscles forcefully tense up. His grandmother had always theorized that life magic and chi was one and the same, but this was the closest any of the former artifact users had gotten to it. Basically, this was just a condensed, one shot version of the force wave.

Launching himself into the Eidolon, fist first, Mason sent the spirit flying...20 feet. Geist, this thing was durable. It quickly got up and resumed its attack.

Mason chuckled a bit, "Yeah, that'll do...just be sure not to let it go to your head. For a ghost, delusions are just as good as confidence. And when ghosts get delusional...things get messy."

The Eidolon broke free from the plants and charged. Mason pointed his arms at the spirit and hammered it with a burst of life energy. It would neither heal it or damage it, as it wasn't alive...but also non-corporeal, so it would really just knock it back.

And throwing stuff around was plenty good for a distraction. Unfortunately, the thing was quite burly, so it was only knocked back a little bit. Mason began goading the Eidolon outside so they could have a bit more room to manuever.

This wasn't going to last much longer.

This spell was designed to buy time, not to actually protect the user for very long. He could feel the man testing the barrier, seeing if it had any weak points. If the barrier could last forever, it would have been one of the best spells in Mason's arsenal. However, it lasted for about three minutes.

Mason had to remember a new spell and fast.

Let's see...he had his two end game spells, but he could never get those to work at convenient times...

Then again...he did have that spell. It was one of his personal favorites from the Bands, and it may help even the play field a bit. Mason held the staff out forward as he began to say the incantation, "World of flowers envelops us, world of trees shade us, world of grass supports us. I am the spirit of the living world, I who support and give thee life. From myself, a new world springs, a land of harmony!"

The feathers dissipated and flowers and grass began to mystically spring up everywhere around Mason as he slowly descended to the ground. He landed quietly as the spell took full effect. Even though it was night, it felt as though it was a bright and sunny day, and even though there was no wind, there was a pleasant breeze. What this spell actually did was just create an air of peace within a certain area. It tended to distort dark magic a bit, though it definitely wouldn't be an automatic win against someone this powerful, but it definitely would distort some of his more deathly spells and make it somewhat easier for Mason to counter them.

"A long and drawn out ritual, or a much more powerful spirit..." Mason brought himself to his feet and turned towards Orchid, "With most ghosts, their power comes directly in their own thoughts about how powerful they are. Basically, they are empowered by their own confidence. With Eidolons this is most definitely true."

He watched the being slowly break through the binds and attempt to make its way forward, they didn't have too long, "I don't think we have the raw power to defeat this guy easily, so we're just going to have to hold out and wait for my grandmother to work out the ritual to seal it back into limbo. So we have to hold our ground for the twenty minutes and we're good."

"Think you can do that?"

Mason felt it. In fact, the blow actually hurt him. Nothing more than a bruise, but that wasn't a good sign. That meant this thing was strong enough to break through his protective barrier. In general, that was the one thing that made him special...the one thing that allowed him to fight crime. Every one of his other powers were either just medical or just cheap parlor tricks.

To be honest, Mason always perceived himself as pretty useless...

But now wasn't the time to debate his worth. He needed to figure out a wait to keep this thing entertained.

He pointed his staff at the approaching creature and blasted it. However, the spirit simply walked through the magic as though it was nothing. This prompted Mason  to quickly retreat. With a groan he said, "Dammit, this isn't working...'

Eidolon.

To the average person, they were just another ghost. However, they were far more different than your average ghost. In truth, they aren't actually the soul of the person they seem like. They are an astral double of that person, basically a spiritual imprint that person made in life. They are aware that they aren't that person, but beyond that, they don't know what to do with themselves. Unfortunately, many of them tend to go bad because of this.

Though they obviously seem not human, they can physically manifest effortlessly for some reason. They also hit like a freight train and can become intangible at will. Even when tangible they are durable as hell. They can also move through mirrors. Since they aren't really ghosts, many of the tricks that will destroy a ghost won't work on a Eidolon. Salting and burning the original body does nothing, salt in general is useless, and using iron to toy with the magnetic forces in their bodies is only marginally effective.

The only real way to beat one is a complicated ritual to seal it back into limbo.

The ritual generally takes about a half hour to perform...

And they didn't exactly have the free time at this point.

The shady Eidolon made his way towards Mason, with a crooked grin on its face. Without warning, he plunged his fist in Mason's stomach and hammered Mason through a nearby wall. Mason's grandmother was already preparing the ritual to send the thing back. She turned to Orchid and said, "Hurry up and help the kid. I can send the Eidolon back, but I need you two to distract it."

Snakes?

This guy was a borderline human cliche. Mason began frying the ground around him with orange bolts from his staff, attempting to keep the snakes at bay.

Mason had to get some sort of spell going, other wise, he was finished. He began thinking back to every magic lesson he had. There had to be something of use.

After a few moments, Mason's spell finally came to him. He cleared his throat and began the incantation, "I am the child of embers, burn under me. I am the child of waves, flow around me. I am the child of stone, lay your foundations upon me. I am the child of the breath, surround me. On wings I fly, on wings I fall. Feathers embrace me, for I call for you!"

The bird on the top of Mason's staff began to glow lightly. Moments afterwords, golden feathers began to flow out of the staff and flow around Mason. Within seconds, he was surrounded by a sphere of feathers. It was by no means his best spell, but it would provide a few brief moments of protection. Mason began to scry his memories for any more complex spells he new. Or something that could take this guy out. Currently though, nothing was coming to him...

Mason listened to the guy's story intently. Afterwords, he decided that he should probably start watching the news. He always seemed to miss those big events. Once Orchid questioned his grandmother, Mason decided to explain himself, "Err...well, she's my grandmother...she was teaching me how to do a seance, and we ended up summoning you...and she's always like that."

"Shut your mouth boy."

"Oh you shut your mouth."

The candles began to flicker a bit as the air got colder. Something weird was definitely going on. Mason's grandmother spoke up, "Look sharp kid, that wasn't the only one who decided to come."
