How do you determine who are the greatest heroes of all time?

 Forgotten Heroes?
 Forgotten Heroes?
Over the last week I was working on making a list.  http://www.comicvine.com/myvine/liberty/self-titled/75-19980/.  I have always wondered who are the greatest characters of all times and how does a person objectively determine that.  So many heroes of long ago were huge in their time but are relatively forgotten now.  Their  impact however still exists even if unseen.  Not only that we can only speculate what characters that are huge now will be forgotten in twenty years.  God forbid DC or Marvel fold how would that effect the popularity of the companies.  Heroes are pretty popular now just looks at all the movies but will that last?

I think I figured out a way to determine this but I wondered what you think.  How do you like my idea.  Do you think this shows the greatest characters of all time?  I cannot stress that part enough.  All Time.  Just because a hero has been huge since the late 60' means they can put an impact on the late 60'  They may be huge now but who was big before they were big.

 How popular is your hero?
 How popular is your hero?
Below is what I wrote and the rules I used to figure out who the greatest heroes were.  To find out who made the list check out the link.
Thank you for checking out this list.  I worked very hard on it hard over seven days and I honestly spent way too much time everyday working on it.  I made this list because I wanted to find the greatest heroes of all time.  In other-words I wanted something better than an opinion or a popularity contest.  I think it is fair to say that the vast majority of comic readers either only read recent comic books or are reading a very small portion of older books.  This does not make them bad fans, after all it is hard to find a whole run of books for a decent price and it is difficult to even find some of the best books.

The sad part is heroes that were huge for decades become unknowns because the company that produced them went out of business.  Not only that but fads change for example war comics and westerns were huge a few decades ago but are all but non existent now.  Take a look at a character like Blackhawk.  He was huge for decades but you rarely see him anymore.  He had films and theme songs and all sort of things.  He was one of the biggest comic heroes there ever were but most readers today never even heard of him.  Check out his page on the vine.  Ice has a better page and she never had one self titled issue ever.

 Do you know this hero?
 Do you know this hero?
So, while I was conceptualizing this list I had to find a way to objectively rank the charters who are the greatest in comics.  The best way I came up with is to count their self  titled issues.  A self titled issue is a comic the uses the name and only the name of the main character to sell the book.  Quite often new heroes will have a book that trying to make the character more appealing like Superman in Action, Spectacular Spider-man, Incredible Hulk, Sensational Comics,  and Tales of Suspense.  Eventually, the hero becomes well enough known that they get their own book.  Sometimes, this takes too long but only the biggest and best get a self titled series for an extended period of time.

Not only is it true that only the greatest heroes given their own self titled book  for an extended period but  they also almost always only print one self titled book at a time.  The other books are made with adjectives to differentiate the many titles.  I didn't want this to turn into a who has the most appearances list.  It is more about sustainability and marketability over a period of time.  I will grant you that it is not flawless for example Hulk and Spider-man are lower than they should be but,  they still made the list because they are two of the greatest heroes of all times.

 We are legends!
 We are legends!
I see so many reviews and post that will list a legendary hero arbitrarily as a B-List hero.  One of the most famous of these is Booster Gold.  So much so that he B-List status has actually become part of his character and yet he has had 74 issues in his two self titled books.  There is not that many characters that can support their book that long and Booster is still going strong.  Comics are made to make money and Booster would not have the runs he has had without fan support.

This list sets out to prove something.  Most comic readers think that they know a lot about comics without knowing the past.  Most readers start reading at a certain time and don't really bother or don't have the chance to look at older comics.  The point is they don't understand the popularity of characters like Dick Tracy, Green Hornet or even the Blue Beetle.  For example most people don't even know who the first Blue Beetle was or that his first comic came out within a few months of heroes like Superman and Batman.  Had Blue Beetle been in DC Comics he would be one of the staples of the franchise.   There are numerous characters like the Spirit, Flash Gordon, Blackhawk and the Phantom that have movies and shows and comic series that have lasted decades but most fans miss the flavor of what comics are and dismiss them as B-List heroes.  I invite you to look back and see the greatest comic characters of all times.

 The First Blue Beetle?
 The First Blue Beetle?
Any good list requires guideline to follow.  Here they are.
  1. All the characters can not be too cartooney.  There are a few characters however that bordered on the too cartooney rule and I added them.  They are the Riverdale characters, Joe Palooka, and Scooby Doo.  These characters for reasons explained below are the exception.  To be completely fair. I added an extra entry for each one of these exceptions so you can make up your mind if they belong or not and still have a top 100 list.
  2. Only self titled books are counted.  This means that it has to have the character's name and only the character's name in order for it to count.  For example Superman, Clark Kent and Superman: Clark Kent would all count.  Things that would not count would be  Superman in Action, The Adventures of Clark Kent, Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen or Lois and Clark.  After all this is a list of characters with self titles books and that is what a self titled book is.
  3. Team issues are not in this list.  I am looking for individuals.
  4. I am looking at who the star is for each book.  Take Green Lantern for example.  There have been several Green Lantern books, but several different characters were the star from Alan Scott to Kyle Rayner.  I am going to count the hero who is the star and not count them as all the same for one Green Lantern tally.
  5. When tallying the number of issues in a series I have added the annuals and specials in.  This is the case as long as they qualify for the self titled criteria.  So a book that has 37 issues 3 Annuals and 5 specials would say that it has 45 issues for the series instead of listing every annual and special separately.
  6. Whenever possible I chose the page of the hero instead of the character's real name.  For example I chose the Azrael page instead of the Jean Paul Valley page.  I explained what one I was talking about in the description.
  7. I will not count reprints of the series.  Sometimes comics and even whole runs of comics have been reprinted I am only counting the first run.
  8. I will not have any non English comics.  The reason for this is only a lack of information.  I have not found a reliable source that lists all the comics from a particular country.  Comicvine is great but still incomplete.  I can also only read English, and a little Spanish and German.  So if anyone has a reliable and complete source they can refer me to I will look closer into it.
  9. Lastly, I will update this list from time to time but considering all the work I will not do it every week just because one new issue came out.  If I missed someone or made a glaring mistake let me know.

I hope you enjoy the work I put into this list and recommend it to others.  Thank you.

The Greatest lists and Reviews (Edit) =]

I love the lists and reviews that people make on Comic Vine.  The only problem is there are so many great ones that go unnoticed.  The reason for this is there are over 5,000 lists and probably more reviews.  Unless you are really lucky your list and review go unnoticed no matter how good it is because the highest and most voted lists are the ones that are featured and reviews are subjected to the interest of the user.  Old reviews for example go largely unnoticed because there are not as many people reading the older reviews.  I thought that it would be fun to recommend those great lists and reviews especially the ones that have gone unnoticed.

Lists
There are great lists, horrible lists and everything in-between.  For example there are the standard lists like favorites, themed and the always classic "Hot Girls"  These are great lists and fun but they are common.  Then one day you find this unique list that is cool and realize that no one or very few have even noticed it.

Reviews
The same could be said about reviews.  What is that really great review that stands out more than any other.  Is it one that stands above all the other seven reviews on the page or is it the long forgotten review of a comic that no one has seen?  What is the best of the best.

Guidelines
I would love to see a quest that had people vote for a 100 lists as well as reviews.  That would really shake things up and get people looking at things they may never look at.  As a nice substitute I am hoping that this blog will get people voting on the often over looked lists and reviews.  Now here are some guidelines when posting on this blog.

  1. Vote for only one great list or review per post.  You can post as much as you want.  I just don't want giant lists.
  2. Tell us why you nominated the list and review for Greatness.
  3. Don't be lame and nominate your own list or review.  That also includes nominating lists/reviews using a different account.

A Poor Spectre Story

No Caption Provided
I wrote this review and for those of you who know me know my reviews are not real long and this is by far the longest review I have ever wrote.  The review brings up many points about less than great story writing.   Now this review in no way a negative comment on the Spectre character himself.  It is a comment on this one story.  It is the second book in the 1992 Spectre series. This is an old story so I hope you will read the review and vote on it.  All that said I thought this brought up many points I wold like to comment on this as to the poor story development.  Please read the review and comment below.

 http://www.comicvine.com/the-spectre-crimes-of-passion/37-59121/user-reviews/?review_id=11603

I really enjoyed issue one and read issue two right away, and the story was alright unless you think about it at all.  I know what the writer was trying to say but it fell hollow the way it was done.   I will get more into that later.

As for the good things in this issue.  The art was good and the story was smooth.  The art on the cover was awesome.  I however only gave the book two out of five stars because of plot.

** The preceding contains some very minor spoilers but, the book is almost twenty years old so don't worry about it.**
This issue revolves around a girl name Jacqueline Connelly who was killed and her soul relives the moment over and over and over again.  The Spectre is obviously drawn to solve her murder.  As it turns out Jacqueline was a married woman who was having an affair with a very wealthy man.  There was some doubt as to who killed her but it was believed that her husband was the murderer as he was in prison.

This leads to problem number one.  The victim in this story has been very publicly cheating on her husband in a small town.  Her boyfriend has even bought her her own a large beautiful home.  This has completely embarrassed her husband, twin sister and parents.  The problem is I no longer l bad for the victim.  I don't think she should have been killed but the fact that her soul is in some kind of purgatory doesn't enrage me.  I could forgive her but the Spectre is not about forgiveness.

So the Spectre goes to visit the primary suspect who is in prison waiting for an appeal.  Even though he professes his innocence the Spectre makes him see his death and shows himself going to hell and seeing all kinds of horrors.  While in his vision of hell the husband proclaims that he is innocent and god should know that.  He exclaims that although no one believed him in his real life he thought that his innocence would be proven in the afterlife.  The Spectre believes him and tells him so.  The husband is so shaken up that as soon as the Spectre leaves the man hangs himself.

This brings up problems 2-4 .  2) The husband goes from having hope that he will be released because he his case in on appeal.  Then the Spectre shows up and so badly scares him that he hangs himself.  Even though he was innocent, his case was on appeal and the Spectre says he believes him.

3) Why would he kill himself if he thought he was thought he going to hell?  The hell was the thing that scared him in the first place.  It makes no sense for him to want to go back to hell.  Not to mention many people believe that if you kill yourself you are going to hell.  It was not made clear if the husband thought that or not.

4) This does not make the Spectre look like a very good hero.  Spectre sees right into this mans soul and doesn't realize that the husband is so distraught that he is going to take his life.  The Spectre is also a large part of this man taking his own life.  He is as guilty of his murder as the actual murder turns out to be in the end.  Scaring someone bad enough that they take their own life could be a legal president.

So the Spectre continues on and shames the boyfriend who also did not kill Jacqueline but the Spectre shows him hall small of a man he really is.  The after humiliating the boyfriend he goes to Jacquelin's grave site.

At the grave who should show up but Jaqueline's twin sister, Judith.  Judith as it turns out killed her own sister in a heated argument.  Judith and her family were embarrassed about what Jacqueline was doing and rightfully so.  There argument got heated and Judith ended up killing Jacqueline.  In fear Judith nev er admits to her crime and felt that she needed to take care of her parents.  She was also concerned about how their elderly parents could survive loosing both daughters with one being murdered and the over being a murderer.  The Spectre punishes her to the point where she runs off a cliff.

This is problem five.  Judith is a murderer but no more than the Spectre was and the Spectre knows this before he kills the girl because she tells him.  The Spectre claims to be Vengeance and Justice but these are not the same ting and they are sometimes in conflict.  From what I know of how Spectre gets his power I think this issue makes him and the height power that give him the power look bad.

Problems summation. The only innocent person in the story takes his own life perhaps no longer becoming innocent depending on your point of view.  Then at the end we find out the Jacqueline's soul is unchanged and still reliving the moment of her death supposedly teaching Specre a lesson.  Nothing and no one comes out of this without being damaged and there seemed to be no justice.  Also the vengeance didn't seem to fit.  I know their is no limit to how vengeful someone can be, but Spectre is suppose to be a superhero on some level and I don't think he ends up looking good here.

The X-Men Faulty Premise

 Great Art
 Great Art
I will admit I am not an expert on the X-Men and the reason for it is I don't like them that much.  I have around 250 X-men related comic and have read a few more.  I have seen most of all the cartoons and movies (some of these I have seen several times).  So, it is with that amount of experience that I am writing this blog.

What I don't like about the X-Men is not the characters but, the very premise they are based on.  It is the problem of genetics.  Stan Lee said himself that the hard part to making superheroes was creating an origin story that gave them power.  With the X-Men you don't have to do that.   Here are my problems.
  1. Why does each X-Man have a different power?
  2. Why don't multiple X-Men have the same power?
  3. Why don't children always inherit their parents powers they way you would think they would?
  4. The evolutionary aspect is too dramatic and too diverse?

 Another Great Shot
 Another Great Shot
This is a lot so let me try to explain.  Take Archangel for example.  In evolution an animal does not just one day grow wings.  It is a very slow process that takes generations to develop.  The animal will develop feathers and smaller wings and one day generation later the animal will fly.

Look at it genetically.  If two non mutants have a baby they are most likely to have a non-mutant baby.  If a mutant and a non mutant have a baby, the child should either inherit the ability of the mutant parent or the non-mutant parent.  It could also be some combination of the two.  If two mutants have a child then the child should have some sort of power that the parent has.  This is not absolute but most likely depending on the progressiveness of the gene.  If there is some mutant in the direct family tree somewhere than it is still possible to have a mutant child but it would be more rare the father back in the family tree the mutant is.

These girls are starving!
These girls are starving!
There are thousands of mutants in the Marvel universe and they all seem to have different powers.  It would seem that many of them should have the same or similar powers.  Perhaps there is something I am missing.  If I have made a terrible error let me know?

No love for Charlton in the shadow of the Watchmen.

 The First Watchmen
 The First Watchmen
The story of the Watchmen was based on the characters from Charlton comics.  Originally Alan Moore wanted to write a story called "Who killed  Peacemaker" but DC Comics wanted to use the characters in a different way.  This led Alan Moore to write the story anyway using characters he based on the Charlton heroes.   Doctor Manhattan was based on Captain Atom, Silk Spectre was Nightshade, Rorshach was the Question, Nite Owl was the Blue Beetle, Comedian was Peacemaker and, Ozymandias was based on Peter Cannon, Thunderbolt .

One thing that bothers me about this is the popularity for the Watchmen characters over the original Charlton characters.  There can be no argument about the impact Watchmen had on how comics would be written.  That said there is almost a reverence towards the Watchmen characters and a "who gives a damn" attitude toward the characters they are based on.

Now be honest to yourself and this blog if you post here.  Have you ever even read some of the Charlton stories these characters were in?  So many times we comic users dismiss the stories and characters we don't know much about.

 Here they are now
 Here they are now
The Blue Beetle for example goes beyond Charlton and was one of the first superheroes to be written about in comics.  He is only a few months newer than Batman and Superman.  He was very popular for a long time as well.  He was featured as one of the Big Three for Fox Comics.  He had a comic strip in the news paper and he had his own radio show before television.  If the Blue Beetle had been created by DC Comics back in the 1930's he would be one of their iconic characters.  Instead the company he was created for went out of business and he was sold.  Over and over he was sold until he was bought up by DC Comics.  At this point he had been dramatically changed twice and he was tossed into a world filled with a thousand characters in DC Comics.  He was no longer the big fish in the small pond.

Another annoyance of mine is the number of comic lovers that don't even know that the Watchmen were based on Charlton heroes.  Most don't even know what Charlton was.  Blue Beetle is just one of many Charlton characters who seems to get little love or respect.  That would be fine if there wasn't so much love for the characters they were based on.  To be honest I can only think of four reasons for this.

  1. The first is ignorance.  Someone just don't know they were based on other heroes.
  2. The second is love of the dark.  Some people just love darker comics and have no interest in other stories no matter how well they are written.
  3. The third is laziness.  It is easier to read the Watchmen then find some good stories based on the original Charlton characters they were based on
  4. The fourth is apathy.  What can be said about apathy?

Let me just say they the Charlton characters are better than the Watchmen characters they were based on.  Yet I will probably never see a movie based on any of them.  Let me know where you are on this issue.

Stinky Comics

Did I get your attention?  This is an off topic subject about stand-up comics or comedians.  Have have been an amateur comic for a few years now.  I have never attempted to become a professional because I got into it later in life and I am not ready to travel all around the country while my children are little.  So this is just a could have been thing for me.  I revealed that I had done some stand up to another user and I got a similar question that I get a lot.

I wanted to ask you: do you ever get the feeling that "comedy" is sometimes just a matter of being on a mic in a comedy club?  Sometimes, it seems to me that you could say the most un-funny, awful crud on a mic, and people would laugh, because it's a comedy club.  I cannot count the number of times I've seen guys on Comedy Central, where the audience was just cracking up, and I was sitting there going, "What the heck?  That guy's not even remotely funny."  I'm pretty sure I've got a decent sense of humor.  I'm not the funniest guy in the room, but I feel I can recognize funny when it shows up.  So I was curious how you feel about it, since you're actually a comedian.

An Outdoor Show ( I Represent)
An Outdoor Show ( I Represent)

Well here is the honest to God truth.  It depends on the night, the time of day, the audience, the content and the place.  You can be hilarious on a work night and die on stage.  Most of your audiences are people who have worked all day, they are tired and they don't want to drink too much because they have to work again the next day.  They look at you like "I dare you to make me laugh"

Saturday night is the best night but even then you will do better at an 11:00pm show as opposed to a 7:00pm show.  I remember doing a show who a work group who came.  I have a semi-raunchy act.  Not vulgarer just a little raunchy.  Well no one wants to laugh at a raunchy joke next to all their co-workers.  Worst audience I ever had.

Some of your worst comics are the Las Vegas comics.  They will do the same show and it will be jokes like "Don't airports suck?".  Really trite and old jokes.  They get big laughs because the people who go to these shows are not comedy fans and this is probably the only stand up comic they will see in their lives.  Not many comics respect them.  They are also extremely well paid and that leads to jealousy a little bit.

 Wrong Comedian
 Wrong Comedian

There are also comics who a funny to a small group of people.  Comics who are gay will do a whole act of gay jokes and if your not gay and don't relate you lose interest.  A lot of female comics are like this.  I have seen  many "man bashing" acts that start out funny but turn into "O.K.  I get it. Men suck".  The same can be said for any minority or niche comedian that fails to speak to a broader audience.

We humans all have the same or similar experiences.  The trick is finding that humor.  If you see a comic placating their act to a small group of people and you are not a part of the group watching the special at home then you may think they are not funny.

Lastly, content is important.  There are many people who do not like blue comics, prop comics or insult comics.  It does not matter what they say or how funny they are.  If there style don't appeal to you, that you are not going to like them no matter what they say.

If you too had this question I hope this answer helped.

Religion, Gods and Magic

I write this blog out of confusion and frustration.  I do not understand religion, gods and magic in comics.  I especially get confused in the DC Universe as I only know basic stuff in the Marvel universe.  In the DC Universe there are many religions and religious characters who have interactive gods who do everything from fight with them, give them powers and control their afterlife.  What bothers me about this is the sheer amount of contradiction between the faiths.  Now before I go on let me post a disclaimer.

**Disclaimer**

This blog is in NO way expecting to debate different faiths as it is meant to discuss how religion, gods and magic interact in the DC Universe.  Please respect this

Now that I got that out of the way how can a universe exist with so many contradicting faiths and pantheons.  The DC Universe has everything from Christians, Hebrews, Satanists, Buddhists, Hindus, and more as well as Greek Gods, Roman Gods, Egyptian Gods New Gods and this is just scratching the surface and I haven't even mentioned magic yet.
  1. Problem number one is that all these religions and many forms of magic exists in the same world.  Even when they contradict each other.  Christianity for example believes in only one god.  If that is true than the others shouldn't exist.  Right?
  2. Problem number two is the gods themselves when looking at the many pantheons there seems to be little difference between the powers of the gods and the Superheroes themselves.  What makes them gods?  Do they just declare it.  Look at someone like "The Almighty Darkseid"  Darkseid is continually beaten by Superman who is not considered a god.  That said why is Darkseid a God so fallible.  How about when the gods are killed.  How do you kill a god?  (I mean that theoretically, not literally)  My point is there is nothing that separates them from the superheroes so how are they Gods or what makes them gods?  Is it just there insistence that they are?
  3. Problem number three.  Magic.  This is so overwhelming I'm not sure where to start. In comics and DC is no exception there seems to be every form of magic, dark art and bizarre happenstance that it is unquantifiable.   This is also contrary to science and science fiction that also exists.  Take Solomon Grundy who gets his power by being dumped in a magical swamp.  Where is this swamp again and why has no one else been dumped there.  Especially after he came into being and people know what it could do.  Secondly Solomon was dumped there by a mafia style gang.  It seems difficult to believe that they only dumped one body in that swamp.  How about Zatanna?  She can virtually do anything with her magic.  There are so many like Dr. Fate and Morgan La Fay.  They all seem to work so differently and yet they all exist on the same world in the same universe and that is just scratching the surface.
Perhaps this is one of my weaker blogs and I admit here that I have no answers on it.  It is my complete confusion and frustration in this matter that brings me to write this.  Is there anyone who can make sense of this mixed up, messed up conundrum?

If I could buy DC Comics

 The First League
 The First League
Hey, this is a pipe dream but if you are reading this blog thank you for indulging me.  I love DC Comics.  There are a lot of things that have upset me over the years but they upset me because I really care about the product.  Marvel is another whole story.  Sure they have some great characters that I like, for example Captain America and She-Hulk but for the most part I have never been that interested.

Getting back to the point If I owned DC Comics...
  1. I would reboot the entire line.  I know there are a lot of people who hate that but I think It is necessary because DC has bought so many comic universes and have tried to merge them.  With mixed results.  (see other Blog) (http://www.comicvine.com/myvine/liberty/dc-comics-relaunch-it-is-time-to-do-it-again/87-50919/) By rebooting the whole universe we can merge all these different universes more seamlessly than having a Crisis every five to ten years.
  2.  A New Age
     A New Age
I would create a new age in comics.  To do this I would have to end the current age.  I would do this by writing a new story arch where a quasi villain is able to wipe out a characters existence by simply touching them.  He would also have a similar personality to Rip Hunter and truly believe he is doing it for the greater good. When this villain touched another character it would mean they never existed.  For example what would the DC Universe look like if Batman or Superman never existed?  With each character that gets destroyed a new world emerges.  Characters would take up mantles of others.  People who were once dead would be alive and vice versa.  As well as characters changing their moral compasses back in forth due to the experiences of their lives.  Costumes would look change.  Chaos would ensue. The whole thing would start with the deletion of more of the bigger characters forcing others to take up the slack.  It would end with the villain being defeated by a small group of odd heroes who are able to stop the catalyst by wrinkling time and ending their universe knowing that it would begin anew.
  3. All comics would start over.  After the last reboot issue the new age would begin and every comic published by DC would start with issue one.  No one has ever done this before.  It would be unprecedented and start a new age.  I would also only start with a few titles like Batman and Superman and have them come out every week until they were well establish and then turn them back into monthly issues.  They would also never start over again after this point.  For example let's say Booster Gold has a twenty-five issue run and then his series is canceled for ten years.  When it is re-released it starts with issue twenty-six.  This would be the same for miniseries and everything.  This would also create a canon to the comics instead of wonder what from what age is canon or not.
  4.  A Golden Age
     A Golden Age
There would be no golden age.  The characters would start as if they are entering our universe.  Batman and Superman would be the first superheroes ever in this new universe.  Jay Garrick would be the first Flash and his costume would be as modern as Wally's is now.  Alan Scott would be the first Green Lantern and he would look like the Green Lanterns of today along with being a part of the corps and having a weakness to yellow instead of wood.  This would be done with all the golden aged heroes.  The first to wear the mantle would still be the first but they would look like they should.  This has to be done in order to seamlessly merge the universe.  Characters like Wally West and Hal Jordan would eventually show up again as the originals need them to for whatever reason.  This would create a true legacy system.  It would also end the messed up origins of characters like Hawkman.  When Hawkman shows up he will be the first Hawkman.  There will not be any mixed up screwed up origins.
  5. I would add Public Domain Characters to the main universe.  All  Public Domain Characters would be added to the DC Universe and grow with the existing characters.  Black Terror would come up fighting crime along side Superman for example.  To give another MIss Masque would come up fighting alongside Batman.  This would create new super-teams.  Imagine having Jay Garrik, Batman, Miss Masque, Alan Scott, Black Terror, Booster Gold, Hawkman and any other combination as the Justice League.
  6.  Mixing the Leagues
     Mixing the Leagues
There would be no team titles.  Don't panic.  Hear me out.  Every comic would be Batman, Superman, Booster Gold, Green Lantern: Guy Gardner, or Black Terror  They would not be "Batman Detective" Superman in Action" "The Exciting Adventures of Booster Gold", "Green Lantern: Emerald Warrior" or "Black Terror and the Outsiders" for example.  All the teams would still exist just as they do today but the would exist in the comic of the main Hero of the Book.  So if the Teen Titans were led by Superboy the comic would be called Superboy.  There would not be a Superboy and Teen Titans issues.  This does not mean that heroes can't be mixed just like they are today it is only a naming thing.  DON'T PANIC.
  7. All DC Comics would cease and become under one umbrella.  If something doesn't fit it would become part of the mutiverse in the regular DC Universe.  The exception would be Vertigo.  It would still exist as part of the universe but it would be mature books in the same world revealing the darker side of the DC Universe.
  8. Everything would exist in a timeline.  There are a few ways to do this so that the timeline is slower in the comic world than it is in the real world but the point would be characters would age.  they would not be like Batman having five Robins grow up while he stays relatively the same age.
  9. No more man-panties.  In the New DC universe there will be no heroes wearing man-panties.  the briefs would be the same color as the pants.  So Superman would wear blue pants Not blue pants with red underwear over them  and so on. 10.  Joining DC Comics
     Joining DC Comics
Characters will be modernized whenever possible.  There are many different types of comics and characters.  There are War Comics, Horror Comics, Fantasy Comics, Romantic Comics, Western Comics and others.  When ever possible these will be incorporated into the modern universe some how,  This would be easy with Romantic and Horror comics.  Fantasy comics could exist in other worlds or long forgotten times.  Many places and characters would fit into the Warlord universe.  Western and War comics are a little different.  They can only exist in two ways.  One is they would have to exist but not necessarily known to the general public like Hex living in the old west as a regular bounty hunter.  Other things would have to be modernized, like Sergent Rock.  He could exist in the modern world.  The Black Hawks would also need to exist in the modern world.  No war wheels in the past.  The only things that can exist will have to be explained as a missing part of time.  The war wheel would be the best example.  Something like that couldn't exist as a past marvel.
Well you may not like this and I feel like I left something out.  So I may edit this again later.  If you are still really against my idea think of the DC Animated Universe.  It started from Batman and grew into Superman, Static, Justice League and others.  By doing this they were able to make a great world an I don't know anyone who would disagree.  Also look at the Ultimate Marvel universe.  It would not be just like that but it would have some of the more positive aspects that that had.  It is my dream so let me know your thoughts.

What's so great about Hal Jordan?

 Justice?
 Justice?
Hal Jordan seems to be the most popular of the Green Lanterns and yet I find it hard to understand why.  He was not the first Earth Green Lantern and there are four other human lanterns to choose from.  All of them seem cooler and better than Hal hands down.

Why other Lanterns Are Better
Let's start with Alan Scott.   Alan is the original Lantern way before Hal.  He has the golden age look and feel.  He also has Jade as a daughter who is a great character in her own right.  In Addition Alan has the most unique power, origin and costume of all the earth Lanterns.

Guy Gardner is the smart-@$$.  He is the less than reverent, rebel with his emotions bubbling to the surface.  I remember watching the special features of the recent Green Lantern cartoon and they attributed a similar attitude to Hal.  In the cartoon I would agree and I liked the cartoon but, that is not the Hal I see in the comics.  Hal seems much more dry in his comics.  Guy is also the crazy one who has been burned over and over again.  Despite that Guy has a heart of gold that he tries not to let anyone see.  This can be seen in his romance with Ice and his friendship with G'Nort who wouldn't have even been in the league if it wasn't for Guy.

 Is this for real?
 Is this for real?
Guy was also chosen to be the Green Lantern when Abin Sur crashed his ship on earth.  Hal only got the ring because he was closer.  How would the mythology of the Green Lantern be had Guy been selected before Hal?

John Stewart has two neat personalities.  In the DC Animated Universe John is a marine. (once a marine always a marine)  It gives a whole new aspect to the Corps.  In the comic books he is the human Green Lantern who doesn't wear a mask.  He is a man of the people and he even got married unlike most superheroes.  John is also the only main Green Lantern who is a minority and  is one of the most popular superheroes of color ever.

Kyle Rayner seemed like a younger Hal Jordan in the beginning and he did have the horrible origin story of his girlfriend being cut up and put in a refrigerator.  Kyle however came into his own as a more relaxed hero.  He is also the most creative of the Green Lanterns.  Being an artist he makes really neat constructs with his ring and has a much more modern uniform than the other Lanterns.

Why Hal Is Not That Great
To me Hal has always had a "Superman" like attitude.  He has also always had a self-righteous attitude and, yet seems more screwed up than any other lantern and most heroes.  Look at his track record.
  1. Hal is a quitter.  He quit being a Lantern for a time.
  2. Hal doesn't get along with his fellow Lanterns.   He took away Guy Gardner's ring and tried to take away John Stewart's.
  3. Hal can not be counted on.  He inadvertently trapped Guy into the Phantom Zone and thought he was dead but before his body would have even been cold he hits on Guy's fiance Kari Limbo. a very short time.  Can anyone really blame Guy for his anger...Oh yeah Hal can.
  4. Hal is not a team player.  When Guy was put in charge by the Guardians during Crisis of Infinite Earth's Hal turns on him.  Again he quit the corps and the League and tried to take other lanterns rings and get members kicked out of the league.
  5. Hal has a questionable relationship with a very  young woman.  Hal has a serious relationship with Arisia.  Arisia was a young teenager who willed herself to look older.  Hal himself said that he still thought of her as a child and then a very short time later had his relationship with the young girl.  Tell the judge "she looked 18"  and see how far it gets you.  Later, even after the age reboot of Arisia he is seen hitting on an underage Supergirl.  All the while reminding himself that he has food in his refrigerator that is older.
  6.  Hal with Arisia
     Hal with Arisia
Hal has problems with Alcohol.  Hal is the only superhero I know of who went to prison for drunk driving.
  7. Hal is a weak protector.  Hal is the only hero I know to loose his "protected city" completely.  Other heroes have had tragedies in their city but under Hal's watch Coast City is completely destroyed.  Every man, woman, child and blade of grass is wiped out.
  8. Hal is unstable.  Hal went mad with the loss of Coast City and tried to will it back with his ring.  He then went and killed all the remaining Green lanterns and became Parallax.  Yes, I know after the fact a story was written saying he was possessed but that didn't really fit what happened originally.  When going back and reading the stories it never seemed fit.  Lets face facts the Parallax story was made up just to bring Hal back.  I maintain he was too far gone to come back.
  9. Hal has an evil soul.  Hal became the Spectre because his soul was in purgatory for his sins.  Supposedly this was for killing all the Green Lanterns.   In the DC Universe the Spectre is the Wrath of God himself.  This brings up many questions.  Is God wrong in having Hal in purgatory?  Was Parallax more powerful than God and was he able to stay undetected for a time?  Did God not care that Hal was possessed and therefore not responsible.  Was Hal in purgatory for something else?  I'm still not sure.  This is just one of the problems with the reboot.
  10. I CAN'T!?!
    I CAN'T!?!
Hal Jordan is prejudice.  Hal had a friend Tom who he referred to by the racist name "Pieface" or "Pie".  Now in his defense Hal seemed to treat Tom with respect in most cases but calling him Pieface is not that respectable. Hal also had weak relationships with people of color.  (see image)

Hal has so many poor qualities and they are so many Green Lanterns to choose from.  I do not understand his popularity.  I do not understand when there are so many other Lanterns to choose from people still think of Hal as a good hero.  He has been rebooted over and over again because he always does scuzzy or lame things that make him look bad.  You can reboot Batman and say he was always a ham sandwich but that doesn't change things in the past stories.  This is just another point of proof to his being a less than great hero. Who is your favorite Earth Lantern, and why?  I also ask again What's so great about Hal Jordan?

On a character page what publisher should be used?

On a character page what publisher should be used? I am referring to characters who have been produced by multiple publishers.  Take Blue Beetle for example.  He was originally produced by Fox Comics later by Charlton Comics and lastly DC Comics.  Those are the main three publishers but there were more.  When you look at the Charlton Page you will see Charlton's top characters listed and yet none of Charlton's top heroes are really in the list.  This is because DC Comics bought Charlton's top Heroes and whoever posted the character pages listed the publisher as DC Comics.  This can also be said for publisher's like Red Circle Comics or any of the many publisher's produced by DC Comics.  It is also a problem with public domain characters.  They have been written about in so many different publications that they run the gambit.  I have seen some characters list In the Public Domain as their as their publisher.  i don't think that is helpful at all.

The reason I find this to be a problem is because of the history of comics.  I am fascinated by the history of comics and how they evolved with time.  When I look at publisher like Charlton, Fox, Red Circle and all the other golden aged publisher's I miss how important or unimportant they were to the comic world.  The best solution in my opinion would be to be able to list multiple publishes on the character page.  For now wouldn't it be better to list the original publisher as a general rule?
