Daredevil Give A Point

Here is the first in a series of Give a point games. I have two others. One for Iron Man, http://www.comicvine.com/profile/liberty/blog/iron-man-give-a-point/93351/ and one for the Spirit http://www.comicvine.com/profile/liberty/blog/spirit-give-a-point/93368/.

Imagine you are the creator of the new Daredevil television show. Your task is to tell the history of Daredevil from beginning to the end but....(here is the catch) you can only use ten currently existing characters to tell this story. So, I ask you who are the quintessential characters in the Daredevil mythology. You need to determine who he needs in the rouge galley, friends and everything.

Here is how the game works. It is kind of like the give a point take a point game. Only you don't take any points away.

  1. You can add a point to one character for each vote.
  2. You can add a new character any time you want as your vote.
  3. You can vote as much as you want but only once in a row.
  4. All you do is copy the tally above and add your vote or character to the list.
  5. Once we have ten characters with 100 votes each the game is done.

I'll cast the first vote for...

Elektra (+1)

Comic Vine's Ultimate Greatest Superhero Team II.

In 2010 I wrote a blog to create the Ultimate Superhero Team. It was a lot of fun and had some interesting results. You can see them at http://www.comicvine.com/profile/liberty/lists/comic-vines-unofficial-ultimate-greatest-superhero/19232#js-message-9981904 Now it is 2013 and I thought it would be cool to see how things changed.

So... Wouldn't it be great if a bunch of Comic Vine members gathered to vote on the Ultimate Superhero Team? Once the new list is tallied I will post it on my list page under the name Comic Vine's Ultimate Greatest Superhero Team II. I will also have the vote counts. Here are the rules for this list

  1. Each user can only vote for ONE team member.
  2. The team will only have a maximum of ten members.
  3. You can pick from any character that has a Comic Vine page within reason. They can be from DC Comics, Marvel Comics, or any publisher, They can be heroes, villains, dead, alive, young, old or even from different time-lines and universes. Just pick your favorite hero. Just don't pick heroes that would make the list look silly. For example overly cartoon-like heroes, for example Mighty Mouse.

The voting will end once ten different heroes have ten or more votes. I will start with my favorite but he is not the most traditional but he is still my favorite.

VOTE YOUR FAVORITE HERO!!!

...and the first nominee is the Emerald Guardian.....Green Lantern: Guy Gardner.

  1. Green Lantern: Guy Gardner (One Vote)

The Canon of Comics

It's been a long time since I last wrote a blog. I just don't have the time to devote to it. That said, I just wanted to throw this out into the comicvine world. I am tired of "destruction" of my comic book heroes. The "canon" (if you can call it that) is like putty and is changed at a whim to fill the next story.

Got to love it

Everyone has their time in comics when they thought things were right. When a fan feels that the fantasy world was cohesive. The longer you stay with comics however the more that fantasy world erodes. For example my favorite character it Guy Gardner. I loved him when he was with the JLI and even more so when he had the yellow ring. I loved how he got things wrong, annoyed the other heroes, his noble origins and on and on. Then he was transformed into Warrior. It was unsettling to see my favorite hero transformed so completely. The powers were bad enough (in my humble opinion) but what was worse was the complete and abrupt change in his character. Now, Guy of all characters, was a perfect one to do this with because of his history with personality switches due to being driven mad in the Phantom Zone and the repeated blunt force trauma he received. The changing into Warrior however, still seemed like too much of a shock to my system. It just seemed wrong.

Just an average Guy

The Warrior thing did not catch on and Guy would loose his series and fall into virtual obscurity. After what seemed like forever languishing in the new persona he was finally killed. Crushing me yet again by the unremarkable and nonsensical application of his death. He did not get the heroic death. In my mind Superheroes need at least a heroic death. Not just a few panels in a broad comic with a final "Urk". This should be especially true for heroes who carried their own title for a few years. His death was like what you see in a war movie. He was taken out like he was a random henchman with the word "Thug" written on his shirt. I get two arguments on this issue. Number one is: "That kind of random death makes the world more real knowing a hero can die at any moment." My comment to that would be it is not "more" realistic when they can so easily be brought back to life in the next issue or even a few decades later. Number two is: "He was a 'B' lister anyway." My comment to that would be that he is not a 'B' lister to his fans. It really sucks to have a character you love being snuffed out at the end of the story. It would be like having Tony Stark shot in the head and killed when he confesses to being Iron Man at the end of the first movie. It is just to deflating.

Guy was resurrected coming back from hell in an oddly put together story and then again as a Green Lantern and so on until he was reformed in the New 52. In the New 52 his noble origin is taken away and substituted for a good story but still a less remarkable tale the original. It is not easy being a comic fan for more than ten years. It is if the rules are changing every inning of a baseball game. Hal Jordan has gone through the same kind of changes from being cool, to being bland, to being a jerk, to being a criminal, to being cool again, to being evil, to being a villain, to being an agent of hell, to being a victim, to being what ever you want to call him today. If it hasn't happened to you it will. One day you will wake up and the hero you see will only have a name in common to the one you once loved.

The only Crisis done right

My whole point comes to this. I give up. It is like when a person drowns in water. There is this moment when they know they are going to die and they give in. I am giving in. What I decided is not to go along with these revisionist histories. What I plan to do is make my own headcanon based on the books I love. I'll call it "The Liberty Canon". I will cherry pick what I like and ignore the rest. I'm going to make my own timeline and post it in another blog or on my own webpage of what I think the DC Universe should be. In my universe Ted Kord will live and be a mentor to Jaime Reyes, Barry Allen will not come back from the dead and John Stewart and Kyle Rayner will be earth's Green Lanterns. To me Guy will always have his yellow ring and Hal will stay a villain.

Thanks for reading.

In Liberty we trust. =)

Greatest 100 films of All Time

You know I use to make lists and blogs all the time.  Some were pretty successful and I was/am really proud of them.  For a while now I just haven't felt "it".  So, here is hoping for a rebirth.  Several years ago I made my own list of what were my favorite 100 films.  What was cool about it was I had to do it for work.  All of us employees made a 100 list.  It was really cool to see what others liked and why.  We spent weeks refining our lists and talking about them.  Giving each other some ribbing and props for our coworkers choices. At the end we added up the votes to see the companies favorite films.  It was a lot of fun.

I'd like to see that reproduced here if possible.  What are your favorite 100 films of all time?  Give it some thought.  Anybody can post their choices here.  The only ones that will count for the final tally however will have to be a full list of 100 and they must be in order.  Also, feel free to comment on each others lists, and if someone comments on the list don't get all worked up.  There are some who can suck the fun out of these lists by taking comments as personal attacks.  Lets just have fun.

If you want to make a list post your intention on the blog and let us know.  Keep us posted on your progress.  Feel free to ask what people think.  I will keep this going indefinitely.  Just use this as a fun forum to express your love of film.

Here is the list and scores so far, but keep in mind it is based on eleven  lists so far.

The Ultimate Zatanna Elimination Bracket Challenge

From the makers of awesome lists like the Comicvine's Ultimate, Greatest Superhero Team, Comicvine's Top 100 Superhero List, and Comicvine's Top 100 Villains List. We bring you (as Monty Python would say) “Now for something completely different.” Instead of a list we are going to eliminate characters in bracket form until there is only one survivor.

The Concept

  1. There are four brackets.
  2. Each bracket has it's own blog.
  3. Each week we will vote on one tier of the four brackets.
  4. The voting will technically start on Mondays and end on Saturdays. Sunday's will be the tallying.
  5. The list includes heroes, villains and supporting characters.
  6. Each character is seeded loosely by most appearances.

The Rules for voting

  1. You must be awesome.
  2. You can vote on each match-up of the tier. So, week one will have 32 match-up's for each bracket. You can vote on all of them or just one.
  3. You must know both characters in the match-up. Do not vote just because you like one character and yet have no idea who the other is.
  4. The only criteria for voting is your love of the character. It is not based on power of popularity just what character you like better.
  5. In order to vote you must have either a thousand posts or a thousand wiki points. I have to apologies for this rule up front. It is not my desire to leave anyone out but, there are too many users who make multiple accounts to slant the vote. This is an attempt to remedy that. It is unfortunate some people can ruin it for others. Note: I cannot and will not check every user who posts to see if they have a thousand wiki points but if the vote looks suspicious and you don't have either the wiki or post criteria I will just simply not count your vote.

Disclaimer

  1. I am sure there are awesome characters missing from the list. If I skipped your favorite I am sorry. Doing something like this does take a lot of time and work, but no matter what I do it will never be perfect. Someone might have added a character I left off or I might have made a mistake and missed someone. These things happen. Please, don't whine about it in a bunch of posts.

The Ultimate Superman Elimination Bracket Challenge

From the makers of awesome lists like the Comicvine's Ultimate, Greatest Superhero Team, Comicvine's Top 100 Superhero List, and Comicvine's Top 100 Villains List. We bring you... (as Monty Python would say) “Now for something completely different.” Instead of a list we are going to eliminate characters in bracket form until there is only one survivor.

The Concept

The other brackets are...

A New Resolution

When times are good.
Last year things were going well for me and I decided to make an insane reading list for my New Years Resolution.   It was filled with comics classic novels and so on.  I was keeping up but then I lost my job in May.  This hurt a lot and I lost the extra time to read because I was looking for work.  I eventually got a new job in September but at far less than I was making.  This means now I am looking for work and working full time.  Add other things I'd rather not list here means I have little or no time to dedicate to my hobby and enjoyment of reading.  This leads me to My New Years Resolution for 2012.

I wanted to make this years resolution tough enough that it would be a challenge even if I get my career back on track but easy enough that it was possible to do if I don't get back on track.  I decided to read three comics a day and edit the pages on comicvine after I read them.  (If they are not already done.)  Those of you who know what I read know this is a bigger challenge than it may seem because I read a lot more older even Golden Age books than I do ones that are published now.  So, most of the time the comic doesn't have any more than the character on the cover to tell you who is in it.  The Golden Age are especially lacking in information.  Main characters and heroes are completely missing as well as there are still missing issues that need to be added.

So, there you have it 3 books a day.  It may sound easy but I know better in my life.  I through down the gauntlet and ask you too, to make a resolution.  Post it.  Keep yourself accountable.  I will try to keep you updated during the year.  If you care or are interested you can follow my progress.

I made it to January 3rd so far.  Not doing good.  =)

Take a point, Give a point 12: Public Domain (with permission)

How it works

Pretty simple game. just copy the list of the person above you, then subtract one point from the character you like the least and add one point to the character you like the most. Characters with zero points are eliminated. There can only be one winner!

Da Rules - 1/11/11

  1. Start your post by replying to or quoting the list of the poster above you. Make a copy of their list and include it in your post, making your edits. If the poster above you has not followed the rules, please copy the list of the last poster who did follow the rules.
  2. For each post, you may add one point to a character and subtract one point from a different character. (See Rule 8 for Multi-Point Posting)
  3. Add labels to all points that you change. For example, if you subtract a point from a character, then add (-1) after their name. Add (+1) to the character you are giving a point to.
  4. You may also bold the names and points of the two characters you make a change to. This makes it easier for other users to see what you changed. Since you may only subtract a single point and add a single point for each post, there should only be two bold names in your post. (This rule is optional if you follow rule 3)
  5. Characters with zero points are eliminated. They are removed from the list and cannot be brought back.
  6. You may only vote once per day, although you can vote for several days in a row. Your votes do not have to be identical each time.
  7. The points of the remaining heroes must always add up to 250. Any more or less constitutes an INCORRECT post
  8. After at least half of the characters have been eliminated (in this case: 13), you have the option to add two points to a character and subtract two points from a character. If a character has only one point left, you may only subtract one point from that character and add one point to another character. You may not subtract from more than more character in a single post. All other rules remain the same. Further point increases can be made later in the game at the discretion of the game leader. Please remember with multi-post posting that the number of points you take from one character must always equal the number of points you give to another character in that same post.

I know it seems like a lot, but it's actually pretty straightforward. If anything is unclear or I missed a rule somewhere, just let me know and I'll add it to the list. To see what a full game played out looks like, check out a completed game: Justice League
