@strongarm: Even shrubbery can be deadly, at least when ambulatory with a sense of purpose. Motivated with a hatred for mankind's pollution and driven by genetic forces barely understood, a group of plant matter forms coalesced into vaguely humanoid shapes were advancing towards the blockade around the city, moving slowly but purposefully.
They were agents of the Terramachy, Gaia's vengeance. These forms were released on American soil by Canadian supervillains as part of a deal to discredit environmentalist movements made with corporations seeking to silence the hippies. And given the shambling hordes of plants, prokaryotic biomass, and fungi moving towards the city, it wouldn't be a hard task.
Some of the ecomonsters were felled when incindiary weapons were brought against them, thrashing as they burned before falling, but regular munitions had little effect for want of organs. When the monsters closed distances, spikes of hard organic matterwere launched out by pseudo muscular actions while arcs of bioelectricity were shot forward to fell their foes as they shambled relentlessly.
Finally they broke into a loping sprint, monsters of the ecosystem charging into the hapless mass of humanity, smashing into them, leaping upon them, clawing at them. The lucky ones were killed and left to be consumed by microscopic members of the terramachy to make for more biomass, the unlucky ones had infection forms latched onto their faces.
Flailing and screaming as the cells of the tentacled infection forms rapidly consumed theirs, devouring and replacing their heads and extraneous organs while spreading motley yellow biomass over them, the infected lost their minds into the will of the earth, dying and being replaced by the devoured. Rising in their new, stronger forms, they clutched their old weapons and joined the swarm, running forward to enter the city en masse.
Rather than break down the walls, many terramachy forms simply ran up to it and shifted their biomass, conveting themselves into a ramp that let the devils and monsters chage into the city, feeling the need to tear down what man had created and awaken the biomass of the Earth.
But of course, they had to get in line with the zombies.
