Question though. Was it actual bigotry or just people not liking them changing an established character in such a way?

I'm pretty sure it would have to be human. It's too complicated to deal with sexual orientation using alien species (just look at the Asari in Mass Effect)

Other than that I like the fact that DC is introducing characters with various sexual orientations, but do they have to change the old ones? Cant they just make new ones?

Last thought; don't stop at gays, go for transsexuals, bisexuals, asexuals, you name it. Give the writers liberty to create the characters as they please

@Dernman: nope, they werent even comic fans, mostly religious 30somethings on this one magazine"s website who claimed that gay people are hell-bound, and comic readers would be as well. I mean, they werent even articulant or logical, so my assault was pretty easy

Isn't Hawkgirl being reintroduced on Earth-2, while Hawkman remains on Prime Earth? That kind of puts a rift in the whole soulmate schtick. There could be more than one Hawkgirl though, so I don't know.

her sexual orientation was never really that specified, other than attraction, so it wouldnt be too big of a creative leap, right?

Why not create and introduce a new character who is openly gay? Why change an existing character? For PC purposes? I'm guessing this choice was made completely for the controversy it will stir up. They could try to bring back Extrano, Obsidian, Batwoman, or The Question (Montoya). Maybe Guy Gardner will "come out of the closet". xD

This is ridiculous news! It may sell comics for a couple months but it gets annoying. How many characters do we have to make gay before it becomes an old trick. Turning super-heroes gay is as common as it was in the past to kill them off. I swear, if they make one of the members of the Justice League gay, i'm boycotting DC comics, it's disgusting how everything has to be so socialized now, we have Bunker, Midnighter, Apollo, Batwoman, etc. in the realm of DC comics that are gay. I love comics and DC had made me a fan of the New 52 as of last year but this is pushing me away, and sure they may get a few new members in their fanbase but they will lose more than they gain. This is no different then what happened to poor Colossus in Ultimate X-Men but at least that wasn't the mainstream X-Men title and how the author of Harry Potter outed Dumbledore as gay AFTER the books were finished. It's just a ruse to sell comics. But whatever, everyone on here is probably going to bash me over the head for being homophobic, I'm not fyi but I am a conservative Christian and have strong beliefs on social issues. Wonder why we can't have more religious characters besides Azrael and Nightcrawler. Sick of social views wedging its way into the very things I run to to get away from it all.
