This is what happened:  When you said you were going out, she felt like you were abandoning her, emotionally.  Men and women process differently, so your argument was due to a miscommunication with the words each of you are using.  Try this exercise:  Sit down and ask her what she heard when you said, "X."  It will most likely come back totally misconstrued.  Then, calmly, explain to her what you will be doing, why you are doing it, and that you will be back (these words are important).
 
Now the reason it was miscommunicated is this:  Women use words to express more than information.  As men, we normally use it only for getting and sending information. Also women have ups and downs with their emotional states (natural occurrence) and express their emotions in a non linear fashion, while men go within our selves to figure out problems we have, as problem solving is a sign of pride and masculinity.   Trying to listen to what she said, then invalidating her claims (i.e. trying to solve her problem) invalided her feelings of abandonment and makes her more upset.    One last word of advice: pick up the "Women are from Venus Men are from Mars" book.  It will help out a lot and go in a lot more depth than I can, without boring you to death.  hope that helps.
