Easily the first character that I thought of. Batman's nickname of the Dark Knight earns him the number one spot. We actually get to see the Riddler pick up on this in Batman: The animated series where he makes Batman take on the role of a Black Knight piece in a virtual game of chess. One of my favorite episodes. ^_^

Before she joined the X-men, Emma was quite the villainess working for the Hellfire club as the white queen. Mmm that's one hot chess piece I'd want to protect.

Name says it all. Similar to how the piece he is connected with travels across the board, this character travels across time to change the course of the game. ^_^

Not only did he found an organization called Checkmate...he took on the role of the Black King. ^_^

With his last name being Castle. Frank unexpected finds himself entering into this game. When associated with Chess, this character is appropriately named. He walks a fine line across a black and white path waging war on his enemies and moving in for the kill. O_O

Whether Ruse fans count her as a partner or assistant, there's no doubt Emma is definitely an important piece of her series. Like the chess piece related to her surname, Emma's too has traveled a great distance (across worlds no less) and has the power to change the outcome of where a game is headed. ^_^
