I used to stop at a comic book store by the bus stop with my brother everyday after school. At the time I had become hooked on the reign of Superman storyline and was buying a Superman issue every week. The comic store owner noticed my preferences and showed us a Superman fanboy’s dream…The first issue of the Superman comic series. It had a price tag of $3.00 and was shrink-wrapped and attached to the wall in back of the store where all the prized comics were kept.
Looking back…I’m not sure how much me and my brother understood at the time. I think all we heard was first Superman issue and we knew first issues were supposed to be worth a lot. We did tell our father about it later that evening and I think he explained very gently that there was no way the actual first appearance of Superman could be so cheap. As it turned out…this particular comic was the first of a new series released about 50 years after his debut. Even so, for a couple of kids, the chance to own the first issue of Superman was too much to resist and we went back to buy the issue the next day. I remember how happy both of us were having managed to obtain what we considered to be a valued treasure. The issue itself hasn’t increased in value much since then but I can’t help smiling every time I see it. It still remains one of the most treasured issues of my comic book collection. ^_^
