Telltale Games to make "Fables: A Wolf Among Us"

Excellent news for Vertigo fans! Telltale Games, the makers of the Walking Dead Games, will create a game based of Bill Willinghams Fables. As said here:

"The Wolf Among Us, an adventure game series set in DC Comics' Fables universe, is the next project from The Walking Dead developer Telltale Games.

As revealed on IGN, the game sees Fables protagonist Bigby Wolf, a hard-nosed detective who plays a major role in the Fables graphic novels, attempt to keep his fairy tale compatriots under wraps in New York City. The series will take place before the events of the comics, and will launch this summer on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC.

"Developing The Wolf Among Us based on the Fables universe has allowed our studio to build upon all of the hallmarks of what makes our episodic series so engaging for players," Telltale CEO Dan Connors told IGN. "Through an evolution of our approach to choice and consequence, we can further explore the complexity of each and every iconic character in a universe rich with untold history from the darkest sides of the storybooks."

Telltale announce it was working on a Fables game adaptation in 2011, and revealed earlier this year that it would carry a different name than the series it's based on. We've reached out to Telltale for more details on the plot of the games."

Don't even try to deny you're excited for this. I am. The only Telltale game I've played so far is Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse (based off another great comic series), but I like it so far. If you haven't read Fables yet, I'd suggest you try the series out, if just for the beautiful drawings.

More news:

The Wolf Among Us, Telltale Games' upcoming adventure game set in Vertigo Comics' Fables universe, will include an "evolution" of the choice mechanics in The Walking Dead, Telltale president and co-founder Kevin Bruner told Rock, Paper, Shotgun.

Bruner said that the game presents a challenge, in part because the characters and their backstories were established first in comics. That differs from Lee and Clementine in The Walking Dead, in-house creations who could be tailored to fit the story.

"But we really have embraced it," Bruner told RPS. "We've come up with new storytelling techniques. We call it the evolution of choice. A big thing in Walking Dead was going where the story took you, and we would throw these choices at you, but you couldn't really determine what was going to happen next. Whereas in Fables, the choices you make in the moment are all there, like in Walking Dead, but there are places where it branches timeline-wise."

The Wolf Among Us will throw players the same kinds of "in-the-moment choices" as The Walking Dead, he said, but some will have parallel story consequences.

"If you go one way, people will be like, 'Where were you? We were over here and we could have really used you,'" he said. "You have to explain why you weren't there. These are all new role-playing aspects that we're using as tools to help us stay within the bounds where Bigby Wolf can be Bigby Wolf and the Fables universe can stay consistent."

Telltale revealed the game earlier this year. The Wolf Among Us is scheduled to ship on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC this summer.

And some more news...

The Wolf Among Us, which will follow in the successful shuffling footsteps of last year's The Walking Dead, focuses on the reformed Bigby, who acts as sheriff to the secretive community of Fabletown. Located in New York, Fabletown is a refuge for fairy-tale characters - referred to as 'Fables' - exiled to our world after being cast from their original homes by a being known as the Adversary. The game acts as a prequel to the Eisner Award-winning comic books.

According to a preview over on Game Informer, the game has been given the seal of approval by both DC/Vertigo and the comic's creator Bill Willingham, and focuses on Bigby's attempts to keep the peace in the fairy-tale community whilst simultaneously conducting a murder investigation.

The preview also confirms that Telltale's distinctive brand of difficult decision-making is back, as players will be forced to try and balance Bigby's role as sheriff against his personal relationships with other Fables. "[You're] bending the rules and interpreting the rules as the sheriff," says CTO and president Kevin Bruner. "[It's] a really interesting thing to do because everyone in Fabletown has an agenda...you get to interpret other Fables' motivations and how far you let them push the rules."

With Telltale finding such huge success with The Walking Dead last year - and nailing the tone of the original comics so well - it's good to hear that The Wolf Among Us appears to be shaping up nicely. The developer seems to have found the comic book format a perfect match to their own episodic style of storytelling.

And finally, some screenshots!

That's how I feel about it too. In fact I thought no one would ever comment on this! Same that this game doesn't get the popularity that it deserves, though when it comes out hopefully it will turn a few heads. Comics shouldn't have to dress up in spandex and dance around a city to get attention, I'd say. Though it is a pretty damn effective way of getting attention...

As far as I've heard, it's not on next-gen consoles; only PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. You need not worry. Not yet at least.

I haven't even played The Walking Dead yet. Or seen the show/read the comics either. But from what I hear it's something that every gamer needs to play. Unless we're talking about Survival Instinct, which is something else entirely...

@kingofash:

If you are into roleplaying or like stories in any shape or form (Which I assume you do since you are on a comic site) you really must play it, it runs on anything and is cheap to buy and its really once of the best and most immersive/emotional games ive played since Heavy Rain, and ive played pretty much every RPG released the last 20 years so thats saying something. Survival instinct is indeed pure crap, a typical example of a tv series/movie ported into a videogame and failing completely.
