Gurren Lagann creators reuniting for a new anime, Kil La Kill

Kil La Kill is very exciting news...

While the issue of Newtype magazine promising to reveal the details about Hiroyuki Imaishi's (Gurren Lagann, Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt) latest project has not hit stands in Japan, the details for the project have leaked online. Kill La Kill will be a 2-cours battle action show set in an all girls high school, reuniting Imaishi with Gurren Lagann's Kazuki Nakashima on writing and Sushio on character designs.

Produced by the home to plenty of former Gainax talent, Trigger, the upcoming anime will follow Ryuuko Matoi and Satsuki Kiryuuin. Satsuki transfers into school, sword in hand, and attempts to subjugate the student body, while a revenge driven Ryuuko tries to stop her. Themes for the two are “UNIFORM X REVENGE” and “UNIFORM X DOMINATION”.

In the development of the series, character drama concerning the rivalry between these became a driving force on a project that was described as originally being more strictly battle oriented.

Well, Gurren Lagann is one of my favourite animes of all time, so this is hugely exciting news for me. Can't wait to hear more. An official website is up, though I don't think much is yet on it. You eager?

Gurren Lagann is my favorite anime (out of the few I've seen), so I'll probably check this out.

@dboyrules2011: Even more awesome that Ploo from Rave Master is in it. =D Used to watch that anime all the time. Think it aired on Toonami.

Some new information has arrived from the creators! Thankfully someone on The Escapist (not Yahtzee Crosshaw) has translated it, and done a much better job than Google Translate. This is as of the end of May/Beginning of June.

Writer Kazuki Nakashima wrote some stuff about Kill la Kill for his Asahi Shinbun column:

-When coming up with the concept, they were very careful to not fall in the "Curse of Gurren-Lagann"; Kill la Kill has a different sort of atmosphere.

-In the most basic terms, Nakashima describes it as a show about the conflict between two super-powered high-school girls.

-(Kamen Rider)Fourze was also a show set in a high-school, but it's completely different from Kill la Kill; Nakashima feels they helped each other define their mutual identities. (In the TBS Radio, he quickly explained these difference: Fourze was a happy, cheerful story styled after an American high-school; Kill la Kill is a violent and more dramatic and somber story styled after the Meiji Era.)

-Nakashima doesn't want to sound cocky, but he said he had a lot of fun writing it.

-Despite not being originally intended, the "amount of heat" is higher than that in Gurren-Lagann.

-Nakashima has done most of the writing himself; the show is more Nakashima-like and Imaishi-like than TTGL.

-The screenplay is already in the end-game; Nakashima is about to start writing the final episode.

-He hopes the fighting spirit of Trigger, who separated from Gainax to form their own company, will be reflected in KLK.

Amount of heat may be higher than Gurren Lagann? Does that mean more powerful than galaxy-sized machines? He did say they where "super-powered highschool girls" so that could mean just so...

Great to hear that they've almost done scripting as well. I think they might have even, if a Twitter post from the creators means what I think it does (Shut up yes I did us Google Translate)...

Were cheers for good work! ! Rose "Kirurakiru" last episode scenario: RT @ k_z_ki. Trigger and now stone's Easy-to-Gashigashi, the anime after. I'm looking forward to!

There's going to be a manga coming out based off it (by Ryou Akizuki), and some more news about the actual plot.

The story is set on a high school that the student council president Satsuki Kiryūin rules by force. Wielding a giant Basami scissors sword, the wandering transfer student Ryūko Matoi brings about upheaval on the campus. Ryūko searches for the mysterious figure who caused her father's death, but confronting her are the student council's "four divine kings." Fortunately, Ryūko is aided by a talking sailor uniform who tells her, "Wear me. When I am worn by you, this power will become manifest."
