A rant on the state of Survival Horror games

After the disaster that was Aliens: Colonial Marines I had to get this out To state that Horror Survival games are in a sad, sad state is an understatement. To describe it, let me describe what the creators of these games would say...

"Hey, who'd want to play a survival horror when they could play a generic shooter! Screw the fact that people pay good money for a survival horror anyway! Who cares what customers have to say anyway?"

Just imagine you bought Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and it was actually Farming Simulator 2013. Resident Evil 5-6 got it way wrong, and Dead Space 2 felt more of a generic 3rd person shooter. Even the Flood section from the Hallo games are more unsettling than most newer Survival Horrors. I thought that Aliens: Colonial Marines would bring back the horror (and the survival) that we Survival Horror fans lusted for, but instead we got something so awful it cannot be described (perhaps that makes it a good Survival Horror; it was a horror, and we did survive it...) I'm not sure if you are understanding the point that we PAID for these games. We paid with money for Survival Horrors yet all we get are shooters that are wanting to cash in on the Call of Duty phenominon.

Remember when Survival Horrors were actually Survival Horrors? Remember Bioshock, Dead Space 1, Resident Evil 4, Metro: 2033, Silent Hill 1-3, Resident Evil 4, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, Dark Souls, F.E.A.R, Amnesia: Dark Descent and so many other Survival Horrors that left you sleepless? Games that tried to go deeper than just jump scares; into concepts of creepyness? It's more than just jump scares, but the concept too. Modern developers seem to have forgotten that. Hopefull Metro: Last Light, Bioshock Infinite, Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs and Dark Souls 2 will bring scary back and teach the industry what a survival horror should be. I still have faith that we can once again have a genuinly scary Survival Horror.

I am not a big player of survival horror games but I was really looking forward to Colonial Marines.I actually think there are not newer good AVP esque games so that is a rant in itself.A shame the new Alien game was crap it could of been the boost the franchise really needs.

Maybe one day we can get the game we want,maybe...

@JediXMan:The season two ending was pretty good and alot of season two is slow.I wouldn't say its bad because of that but alot of the episodes are slow. The first episode of season two is rather good and the last episode is really good too.Season three is much faster paced, the episodes feel quicker and don't drag on as much.

What I liked is that if you died you would respawn as a brand new survivor instead of restarting from check points. That and the zombies being able to free roam so new two play throughs were alike.

The Walking Dead is a good game, but it wasn't as great as people make it out to be. This is coming from a die hard Walking Dead fan btw haha

I find that rather intriguing.

I just started watching the show; recently finished the first season. It's rather good.

Dude... I feel bad for you because you're going to go into the second season with high expectations and you're going to be let down just like the rest of us were at one time :C haha

Season 3 is amazing though so if you feel like quitting the show midway through Season 2 just push yourself because its worth it! haha

Yeah. I'm walking in with low expectations: a lot of my friends warned me about how bad season 2 was. So I'm just going to try to stick with it until I get to season 3. I heard the ending to season 2 was okay.

Unfortunately, I don't have season 3 on Netflix, so...

I saw the Two Best Friends Play let's play. It looked promising. Perhaps some room for improvement, but it had potential for the genre.

At the moment, I am thinking of playing the Walking Dead game; I'm... conflicted on whether to play that right now.

I haven't taken Resident Evil 5-6 or as survival horror games so I disagree on that point as both are good games. But I'd say both are obviously not how the franchise was once portrayed and shouldn't be considered as such.

@JediXMan: Yeah, I didn't either. I actually borrowed one just to play this game. There are walkthroughs on youtube if you're interested, but yeah...

It's a bummer this game didn't make it to consoles. It could have been great.

@FalconPuuunch:

I don't have a WiiU and I likely won't for the foreseeable future; PS4 first, probably. But it does look good.

You should play ZombiU if you're looking for underrated survival horror games.

I heard good things about that, actually.

I loved it. Reminded me of classic Resident Evil games but also had a lot of originality.

Here's the trailer.

Intriguing blog. While I am not a big fan of survival-horror, I can appreciate your pain. As one who has never played Dead Space 1 or 2 (and have no real desire to), even I quickly saw the problem with Dead Space 3 the second I saw the trailer: it was nothing more than a shooter, which is not what Dead Space is about.

I'm not sure if I'd qualify Dark Souls as survival-horror... though I guess dying in that is scarier than any other game.
