When Annihilus, the Arthrian Alpha Male, learned that the mainstream Marvel Universe was swallowing the Negative Zone up as it expanded he led an invasion force across a dimensional gulf known as The Crunch and crushed everything that stood in his path including The Nova Corps, large portions of The Kree Empire and the last remnants of The Skrull Empire.

The team was named after the title of a famous poem about the disastrous charge of British Calvary led by Lord Cardigan against Russian forces during The Battle of Balaclava on October 25th, 1845 in The Crimean War.
