Batman all the way. There is just something I find fascinating about his motives and the whole dark, noir style of the series. I really do like flawed characters, theres something about them that I just want to read on with. Batman is plagued by the death of his parents, and has became an absolute badass fueled by vengeance. And the relationship between him and the Joker is fantastic. Plus, the cast is amazing.
Although I'm relatively new... but thats just where I'm at at the moment. :)
From the whole history of Batman, including Comics, Films, Television etc what do you think is the most frightening depiction of the Joker?
Was there a particular comic that you found him scariest in? Either because of the story or even the way the artist drew him?
I'll get the ball rolling. I'm relatively new to comics but I've read a good few Batman comics and in my opinion the depiction of the Joker in 'Arkham Asylum' (A Serious House on Serious Earth) is absolutely horrifying. Because of both Grant Morrison for the writing AND the way Dave McKean illustrates him. It just freaked me out how Morrison gave him a bizarre sexual aspect which I'd never seen before (He feels Batmans arse, and then starts interrogating one of Arkhams staff by telling him to "Ravish me") It just freaked the hell out of me. And the way he was drawn absolutely terrified me, he looked VERY creepy. The horrible speech about wanting Batman to feel "sticky fingers touch the deepest parts of his brain" (or something like that) made it terrifying.
So, what do you guys think is the scariest depiction of the Joker?
The awesome Easter egg where inside a boat is evidence of Scarecrow with some shady business going on, I think that's gonna play a big part. Also, MORE HUSH.
I think Alfred is vital. Bruce is gonna need somebody to confide in, and be supported by. Plus, without Alfred, Bruce would go mad. The Joker is always saying how Batman belongs in Arkham and that there's hardly any difference between them. Without Alfred to ease the weight of Bruces problems he would just probably gradually turn evil. Alfred is like a moral compass to Bruce.
I just read Arkham Asylum. Really enjoyed it, it's creepy as hell. Dave McKean's take on The Joker is terrifying, one of the best I've seen. And I loved the Amadeus Arkham story, it's an awesome story on its own. Probably going to need to read something a bit lighter after it, it's a bit dark haha.
@NIGHTCRAWLER Thanks for those recommendations, I like the look of Black Mirror
@FullmetalChobit Yeah I was looking at From Hell and Swamp Thing the other day and they looked great. I'll check out Watchmen as well because Alan Moore just seems to be a genius. And thanks for telling me about Waterstones, last time I was in I remember there being a huge graphic novels section. The problem is that Waterstones in an hour away from me, but the WHSmith nearby has a good handful of them, I'll have a check there tomorrow.
