Valko was the second born of three sons to a Dothraki whore. When he was fourteen years old, Valko's mother died in a raid carried out by a rival khalassar. Valko's older brother, Argo, was killed in the raid and his younger half brother, Mago, was captured and made into a slave.
Unbeknownst to him, Valko's father was a famed khal known as Bharbo. Upon news of the death of Valko's mother, Bharbo took in Valko and raised him as his own alongside his other son, Drogo. Together, Valko rode alongside Bharbo and Drogo and brought down the khalassar that had captured Valko's half brother. Mago was rescued and brought into Bharbo's khalassar.
While the bond between Drogo and Valko grew, the bond between Valko and Mago faltered. Because he was not a blood heir to Bharbo, Mago felt like an outsider and resentment grew in his heart.
When Bharbo finally died, both Drogo and Valko were kos within the khalassar and Mago was a Bloodrider. It was then decided that Drogo (the eldest) would take over his father's place as khal. Though there were some who challenged his authority, Drogo slaughtered them quickly and took his rightful place. Valko was allowed to take his riders and start his own small khalassar. Though he offered to bring Mago with him and make him a ko, Mago refused the offer and remained behind as one of Drogo's Bloodriders. He later challenged Drogo to a duel... and lost.
As for Valko, he set out for the Dothraki Sea and began to build his own legacy with his small khalassar. Eventually, he received news Drogo's death. He heard that Jhaqo and Pono, two of Drogo's kos, had divided the khalassar and had gone their separate ways. One by one, Valko tracked down the two khals and challenged them to combat; and one by one, they fell. Finally, Khal Valko commanded the largest khalassar in all of Essos.
Then one day, he saw a dragon....
After the death of his half brother, Khal Drogo, Valko regularly received word of Drogo's widowed khaleesi, Daenerys Targaryen. After Drogo's death, Valko and his khalassar were too far away to offer assistance. Though he had never met the young Targaryen girl, he heard of the love which Drogo felt towards her and that which she felt towards him.
Therefore when he heard that other khals had beheaded Daenarys' bloodriders when they were sent out for aid, he dispatched swift justice to them for their treatment of his brother's widow - the moon of his life. By the time Valko and his Dothraki had finally made their way west, Daenarys had already set sail towards Merreen. As she then forged her legacy in Merreen, Valko decided to continue forging his throughout the rest of Essos.
Several months later, tales of dragons started to permeate throughout Essos. One day while riding at the head of the khalassar, Valko saw it... a large black dragon flying overhead. Never before had he or his warriors seen something so magnificent. Several times, Khal Valko and his Dothraki came close to the beast. It would occasionally even fly overhead, oftentimes passing close to the ground - causing many slaves and even some of the warriors to cringe in fear.
Once, the beast flew right over Khal Valko as he rode at the head of a small detachment of his blood riders. It then turned and came back around towards the khal and his warriors. The faithful blood riders charged ahead to protect their khal, but he raised his hand. Full of uncertainty, the bloodriders stayed back as the beast hovered in front of their khal.
Valko's long hair was blown back as the creature's mighty wings flapped before him. As the dragon came closer, Valko could feel the heat emanating from its breath. Then, it happened... Valko looked the creature in the eye and stood his ground. At any moment, the beast could have unleashed a blast of dragonfire that would have ended the khal; but it chose not to. Instead, the beast let out a loud roar and flew off.
From that day forward, Khal Valko and his Dothraki rode in a path that followed that of the dragon - whenever it could be sighted, of course. Valko never forgot the feeling of looking into that creature's eyes. Something felt almost... familiar. As his khalassar followed the path of the dragon, they raided whatever groups of settlements they came upon.
Groups of hunters, mercenaries, and even some armies tracked the creature as well. Some of them even requested the help of Khal Valko and his khalassar to help bring the beast down. However, instead of helping them, Valko opposed them - choosing rather to protect the creature from those who would wish it harm. Learning that the creature belonged to Daenarys Tagaryen only affirmed Valko's actions. Those who challenged him were quickly reminded of their place - often through bloody means.
The dragon itself embodied the Dothraki spirit. It went where it pleased, took what it needed, and lived its life in total freedom much like the Dothraki themselves. Legend told of men being able to even tame the beasts. A Dothraki was judged by the quality of his mount... and Valko aspired to become the greatest khal of all time...
