THE STORY, SO FAR...
Katsuo Shinobu was born 15 years ago, in a large hospital situated in the center of Tokyo City, Japan. His parents were average, regular citizens. His father worked as a cook at a small diner on the outskirts of the city, and his mother was a receptionist at some law firm. They both received below average salaries and barely managed to get on from month to month.
Katsuo was raised with lots of love from his caring parents, receiving as much attention as possible with two adults that worked 16 hours a day. He was often stuck with snotty, teenaged babysitters that were cruel to him, and ignored his young needs completely. When his father was fired from his job, he stayed at home and cared for little Katsuo. With minuscule funds to live on from month to month, things were getting desperate. Katsuo's father had to resort to lesser deeds, under the radar from his family. He located loan sharks, promising to pay them back every cent he borrowed, he was working on getting a job. His wife didn't care, she was just happy to be able to come home and not fall in a heap upon entering her bedroom. They lived off of the acquired money for a few months.
Eventually it ran out. Katsuo's father had just been hired to work as a fry cook at a shoddy old restaurant, his pay was pathetic. He could only pay the loan sharks back bit-by-bit, as he needed the money to provide for his family as well. By this time Katsuo had been gifted with a baby sister, Akiro. She was a sweet little child that adored her mother. Katsuo loved her like a big brother should, he was 5 years older than her.
It had been a few years now, and the loan sharks had still not been payed back. They took action for themselves, to show the man just who he had "swindled".
They killed Katsuo's mother as she was coming back home from work one day.
The family took a big hit. Their mother had been their everything. She had been the Sun around which all of the planets in the family had revolved. Her death hardened little Katsuo's heart, it turned it to stone. No longer was he the bubbly, happy child. He was a brooding little boy that had a constant scowl on his face.
School was a joke to him. He didn't take it seriously. In fact, he didn't take anything seriously. He disrespected his elders and got into fights for his indifference to everything. If you were blue, he was red, if you were awake, he was asleep. His bright orange hair did not help his case, and he was often accused of bleaching. He didn't care what other people thought of him, he was him for him, not for anybody else.
He lived life in solitary, but he did have a few companions. Some of them quite popular. The prettiest girl in the school had a crush on him, his best friend was a young and budding music producer that had produced a few tracks that had hit number 1 spots on the charts. He didn't care much for friends, but he ones that accepted him were like his siblings. He would give his heart for them.
--
A few weeks ago, whilst walking home from school, a large building imploded a few blocks away from him and a ferocious and inhumane roar filled the afternoon air. Katsuo was on the verge of turning and fleeing for his life, but something kept him rooted to his spot. With hundreds of other Japanese civilians running past him in terror and fear, Katsuo began his journey towards the source of the shriek. He didn't know where this courage had come from. It was as if something had awoken inside of him.
Some sort of Beast.
Upon arriving at the decimated pile of rubble, Katsuo Shinobu was shocked and slightly deterred to find a enormous demon-like monster in a heated battle with some sort of ninja/samurai girl. She was on the back-leg, she was weary. Her wounds slowed her down, and the blood that ran across her face obscured her senses. She was dead on her feet. The monster seemed to have instant regenerative abilities, and no amount of slices from the girl's blade could harm it. With a last and final swat, the girl was torn in half. Katsuo was frozen. The monster turned and stared at him with large, soulless eyes devoid of emotion. Another roar and it was coming straight at him. He was going to die, for nothing.
"Catch!"
An insanely large blade appeared in Katsuo's left hand, seemingly out of nowhere. Despite it's unnatural size, he could lift it with no effort at all.
With the monster moments from murdering him, he had a sudden and powerful rush of adrenaline and before he knew what was happening he was crouched behind the creature, his blade clenched firmly in both hands in front of him, dripping with a sickly looking liquid. The creature gave a final roar and was gone. Katsuo collapsed, unconscious.
--
The young girl was a Slayer. A clan of supernatural entities with high-level aura that allowed them to materialize weapons with their imaginations alone. Only those with unique and high-level aura's could see them. And never before had a normal 15 year old child formed his own Soul-Slayer-a unique weapon formed from the wielder's aura and imagination- and never before had a 15 year old child dispatched a Soul-Feaster with such ease and instinct. Unbeknownst to young Katsuo, he had been become a part of the Slayers that day. Whether he liked it or not. Far away, in another reality entirely, sat the Slayers, watching the young boy. The Head of the Table spoke up after Katsuo collapsed from his first Soul-Slayer manifestation.
"He is ready."
He had what they wanted. From birth, he had displayed exceptional aura that had outclassed most low-ranked Slayers, this had been considered impossible. But it had been proven true, on that day.
He was an above average human with above average abilities that had not completely manifested but were there. And he was going to uncover them, sooner, or later.
--
A few days passed. He had been unable to summon his Soul-Slayer since the fight, and he had begun to ponder if it had all been his imagination. He had become disconnected to his friends, his family, he had kept to himself. He felt as if he were an alien to this world. He didn't belong. He bunked class more and more to take trips through the countryside, he felt at ease there. He would settle down by a tree and listen to some music. Sometimes he slept there, and didn't even go home.
One day something happened.
He was walking through a dense part do the forest that he had never been to before when another roar split the peaceful atmosphere. The Soul-Slayer appeared in Katsuo's hands and he crouched low, ready for battle. After a few seconds of silence he realized what he had just done, and as soon as it had appeared, the blade vanished. Katsuo knew it wasn't his imagination. An apparition formed in the air in front of him, and his eyes widened. It was the girl that had been chopped in half in the battle with the large creature. She smiled gently at him.
"You've been chosen, Katsuo. The Slayers require your powers... Will you help us?"
He didn't hesitate, and answered her question with a firm and honest nod.
The world went white in his eyes and when he awoke again he had his Soul-Slayer in his hand, and he wore a pitch black kimono. He was in his bedroom. He didn't know what had happened, or who that girl was, but there was one thing he did know. He had been entrusted with the duty to exterminate all evil Souls. And he was going to, no matter what!
He wants to protect the world. He wants to save lives.
