If you're going to read them a lot, buy some book plastic film (I'm not sure what the proper English term is) and wrap them in it. You could also take 2-3 inch wide strips of film and put on the outside of the spine, but IMO this looks worse than covering the whole book. It does strengthen the spine considerably though. The downside of wrapping the whole book is that as thin as most trades are, it'll bulk the book out a good bit, and it won't be able to close quite as tightly (but we're speaking marginals here). With book film on it, the book is extremely durable, but IMO, it doesn't need it. I'm a librarian, so I know how much damage books can take, but I haven't even considered wrapping my trades, because they're not going to be damaged in any way by just standing on a shelf, maybe being taken out and read once per year.
Book film comes in both matte and glossy, and in several different degrees of adhesives. Whatever you do, don't buy the strongly adhesive ones, unless you have a LOT of experience wrapping books, because once it goes wrong, it goes *wrong*, and then we can start talking about an ugly book.
Aside from that, and all that I personally do, is a bit of dusting, and maybe wiping them over with a clean, non-wet cloth to remove any sticky fingerprints.
