k4tz's Top 3 Comics This Week (6/13/12)

This was an unusually expensive week. Bank accounts around the world cried out in sorrow as we all rushed to our local comic shops on Wednesday. Plenty of solid titles from the big two filled the shelves and there was no way I could resist IDW releasing the second color classics of the original TMNT run. When the stack was finally cast aside, here are the 3 issues that stood above the rest for me. Do you agree with this list? If not, what were your favorites?

The New 52 has had a few exceptional titles so far, and there's no disputing Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's Batman is among the best of the best. Snyder delivers a great tone in each issue, always finding a way to dive into Gotham's rich history and the dark and gritty art compliments it well. This is Batman at his best and the reveal here is one hell of a twist in this issue.

Ryan Stegman's art is brilliant and vibrant once again. But on the flip side, it's terrible that this is his final issue with the series. That said, it's a pretty good issue for a send-off. Yost puts a heavy emphasis on how Kaine feels about the name "Scarlet Spider" and there's a few very nice nods thrown in there and it continues to help us connect more with Kaine and make him a far more interesting individual. Ana Kravinoff shows up looking for Kaine's blood, and what ensues is a short but oh-so good looking fight sequence. When all is said and done, a handful of epilogues layout the groundwork for what's to come in Scarlet Spider, and as a fanboy of a certain Spider-Man rogue, you can bet I'm pumped for the upcoming issues.

Writer Peter Tomasi continues to impress me with this one. Damian's arrogance takes center stage as he aims to prove he's the best Boy Wonder in the history of the Bat-family. The banter is priceless and the story is split with a focus on a new nemesis. One part Doctor Octopus (one foot in the grave) and one part Ra's al Ghul (I'm refreshed and stronger than before, son!), I'm curious to see his master plan for revenge unfold as Damian creates even more chaos in Batman's world. His lackeys were hilarious, too. The first page is also home to what could disputably be the best use of a a batarang ever.

@k4tzm4n: Yeah, lol. Sorry for the Wall of text, but at least you got a free bump out of it ;).

Grifter's okay. I'm not sure how a non-fan would like it, but I think the writing change would definitely help your case. This issue was as good a jump point as any tbh, all it needed was a bit of context. Last ish nothing much happened.

I don't read Scarlet Spider, so I have no opinion on that, but I did enjoy your other two picks, K4tzM4n.

If I had to pick my top 3 of the week, they'd probably be...

1. Shade #9

2. Batman #10

3. Sixth Gun #23

Close to making the top bunch would be Silk Spectre #1, Batman & Robin, and Fantastic Four. All in all, this was a pretty good week.

ReVamp's Top 3 Comics this week -- I was intitally going to list them and write a line but... I felt like writing...

(Didn't read Winter Soldier):

3. Scarlet Spider

Of course, like K4tz said the art of this issue is fantastic. Its a big petty that Stegman is leaving the title, because his art is amazing and while I could potentially see the art somewhat Darker Stegman still captures everything perfectly. This is a pretty solid book with really good writing by Yost. At the end of the day, that's what matters. He manages to write Kaine's problems well and while the latter's gripe is definitely becoming somewhat of a cliché, Yost doesn't make this extremely apparent and by the end of the issue handles in a seemingly fresh manner.

(Something I had previously written for the issue, a review of sorts).

It was definitely an entertaining issue, but I think that the "I want to be good, but OOOH I'm SO bad" thing, while interesting is definitely something that's been done before and didn't seem refreshing. Yost definitely managed to capture the essence of what this crisis, but I don't think he pushed any boundaries in the said plot line, so while that part of the book was definitely solid, it definitely wasn't anything impressive. I'm also kind of blurry on the whole story, I believe I skimmed issue 4 as opposed to reading it, which might lead to some of my confusion on the girl. That said I'm liking the relationships that Yost's creating in the series, with the girl, the other girl (bear with my horrible ability to remember names please) as well as the relationship that he has with the town. I hope that we see more of the Tattoo artist, even if its just tid-bits, I thought that it was definitely enjoyable to see Kaine's reaction to what the town was thinking of him. Furthermore, I like how opposite the relationship between the town and Kaine is, when compared to Parker and NYC. When I first heard that in this issue Kaine was being well received, I was somewhat skeptical. I still am, I'm not sure its going to last (Parker luck and all that), however the fact that he hates himself and they love him, is definitely SO MUCH more interesting when we compare it to the fact that Parker had no qualms with himself (Okay, he does, just roll with it) but the whole town was led to hate him by JJ Jonah. Furthermore I also liked the fact that we may see Carpenter take a bigger role in the series, I definitely would like to see her take a more support like role in it. Not sure if its possible considering they're two different cities and are pretty far apart. I haven't liked Carpenter all that much since her stint as Madame Web began, but I'll give her another chance, because why the hell not. My favorite part of the book though is definitely the end with the priest. I liked the manner in which it was handled and am interested to see whether Kaine is going to find God among all of this. Furthermore the mad respect he gave Reilly was surprising, but I liked it, left a sweet taste in my mouth and the like.

2. Batman And Robin

Dick Grayson is my favorite character. Jason's possibly in my Top 10. Tim's definitely up there. Damian's a character I had gripes with at first, but now I definitely enjoy reading, he's done some pretty good things under Tomasi's pen. How could I not enjoy this issue? I don't even know where to start when trying to discuss why I loved this issue. There's the banter, which is priceless. I mean, I definitely don't think that this issue had the same priceless banter that for example, Dixon could write, once upon a time ago, but its definitely not bad. The relationships between the characters is also something definitely entertaining to watch, whether it be from the friendliness of Dick and Tim, or the more fatherly relationship that Dick has with Damian or the rilarly between them and Todd. If there's one bad thing I need to point out in the issue, it would have to be the later transgression between Tim and Damian. I definitely like that Tomasi has such an awareness of Morrison's run which was definitely evident in the book, but when the whole thing of "Yes I thought of killing blah blah" is getting old, its definitely a card I've seen being played in the Bat-Family all too often and while I don't have a problem seeing it again, it needs to be done in a fresh manner -- which I don't think Tomasi managed. Regardless I like the direction that Tomasi is taking with the book, though I fear he's trying to make Damian superior to everyone else in the Robins circle, which I wouldn't like because lets face it, the lil bastard's 10 years old. He should be outshooting Jason or Out-Jumping Grayson.

1. Batm-- I mean, Grifter

Yeah. That's right. Batman's not on my list. DEAL WITH, BIATCHES. I liked the issue (Batman that is), but meh. I don't know if I like it. Regardless, I loved Grifter. I don't know if I should have liked it nearly as much as I did, because I'm not sure its that much of a good book, but its definitely solid. However, I do love Grifter and its a fact that the book has improved since the writing change. (Yes, Liefeld made improved not only this book, but Hawkman too. Astounding, I know.) So from a fan perspective, while I definitely enjoy some of the characters in Batman and Robin more than the characters that were in this book, the fact is that I've been getting a constant dose of perfectly written Nightwing and Todd for the last few months where as I have never liked the Grifter in the New 52. So when I see this issue where he gets completely badassified and owns the sh*t out of pretty much everyone he needed to do so, well... it exceeded the expectations I had set much more. Now, if I were to review this objectively, it wouldn't have the same value of ReVamp cookies as I'd give the title above, but that doesn't mean I didn't like it more. But its not just because of the "OMG, HE HAS TK" thing. Sure, I liked that, but it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. However until now the book had been compromised of mostly just Grifter being slapped around all over the world, running away like a little girl, which gave as an absolutely horrendous book. Here we finally see him settle down with a clean cast of characters, most of which are recognizable even though altered. He's coming to grips with everything that's happening and we're finally understand where the book is going, with who, towards a common goal, as opposed to the Grifter drifting around and whatnot.

The three issues you chose are good pick but I think Batman and Robin #10 wasn't that good.It was really interesting and showed some pretty good points but some of the past issues were better.

I just finish reading the Batman one but the other never got to read it I went straight for the Green Lantern and enjoy that one to especially that the Black lantern return back to normal.

If you're a fan of the Bat-family then I definitely recommend Batman & Robin. Yeah, Johns has been doing a good job with Green Lantern.

I'm a big fan of the Bat family is the problem is that I don't want to drop my other comics I got a budget :(
