Taking a break

Taking a break from the Vine... all the Mantle discussions pushed some of my disillusionment about the site a bit over the edge. I found myself spending way too much of my time and getting way too emotionally involved with a website that really isn't sure what it wants to be. Will be back once I find myself divested enough to not take things too personally.

Future Fixes for the Creator Bug

For those who don't know, there's a bug on the site that will not allow you to save the results if you check more than one option for a creator (i.e. choose someone as a writer and an editor). From my understanding, it's been going on for a long time, but for me, it has always been like this since I joined the Vine 4 months ago. I've been keeping track of issues I've noticed were a problem in a separate text file, but just realized it'd probably be easier to list them here on the Vine instead. So, feel free to blatantly ignore this list, since it's just me keeping track of future fixes when the bug is corrected.

Plagiarism on the Vine

Been coming across plagiarism more and more as I work on character bios. Please, people, please don't plagiarize. All it takes is for one too many plagiarized articles and an overzealous lawyer at Warner Bros. or Disney to really throw a monkey wrench into the Vine's existence. And I don't really think adding a couple of extra prepositions counts. Also, just because it's not taken from the web, doesn't mean it's not plagiarism or you won't get caught.

Mantle Hero Cleanup!

Going through and cleaning up all of the DC Mantle Heroes, at the suggestion of fesak. My goal is to:

  1. Make sure different character entries exist for each wearer of the mantle
  2. Make sure each entry has the right appearances attached to them
  3. Write up a character entry that fits Red L.A.M.P.'s standard for each of the characters
  4. Clean-up and flesh out the characters' Teams, Friends, and Enemies.
  5. Make sure the images are assigned to the right character

Here is where I'll keep track of who I've done as I knock them off:
Quality Comics Golden-Age Heroes:

For some reason, I've taken to doing the old Quality Comics characters first, since I have been reading their old issues...

My 2 month Vineversary*

* Vineversary is copyright and trademark IcarusFlies. All rights reserved.

Today is my two-month anniversary on ComicVine, and I can't believe that it's only two months! Thanks to the camaraderie and friendliness of everyone out there, it seems like I've been here a while longer. I only wish I had known about the site earlier...

When I first came here, I figure I would help contribute with my wealth of comic knowledge. I set up a goal to contribute at least 1,000 points a day. At the time, I was worried I would not keep up the pace. While I am technically just shy of that goal by about 1,800 points, I'm not worried. After all, I have the weekend ahead to catch up! And there's still ton more material for me to go through! After I finish all the Zero Hour plot summaries, I still want to do the Anima supporting characters. Plus, I still have Showcase, Showcase '96, New Talent Showcase, Darkstars, Psyba-Rats, Primal Force, The Ray, and a ton of other series I want to add info to. Not to mention I am only on the "J"s for Operation: Find Pics of Creators (wow, I need a snappier name for that). Plus, I've been checking out the Story Arcs and Objects for DC, looking to keep them clean and flesh them out some more. Looks like I have my next month cut out for me!

In addition, I got to know some really cool people this month. Silkcuts allowed me to play in his Project 500, which was way awesome (and I'd do it again in a heartbeat); awesome mod xerox-kitty's pep talks kept my energy levels high, and she was kind enough to recommend me for Community Star(let); and watching users like Pikahyper and Liberty be waaaay more productive than I am here, and hoping to reach the bar they set...

Miles to go... miles to go...

Distractions...

I really need to keep my mind on one project here on ComicVine... I keep getting distracted!

My original goal was to go through all the Showcase issues, and fill out characters, plot summaries, etc. Things were going along swimmingly, until I got involved with a Task Request for cleaning up Zero Hour. So, I rewrote that page... only to notice that most of the issues did not have plot summaries. So then, I decided to take a break from Showcase to do those plot summaries.

Of course, doing those plot summaries were easy for Action Comics and Adventures of Superman. But then I got to Anima. Having literally only the Zero Hour issues of her book (I am a crossover junkie), I had no clue what was going on. And, of course, there wasn't a heck of a lot of data on that series, either. So then, I decide to take a break from the Zero Hour plot summaries to work on Anima! Luckily, my local comic shop has a healthy 50 cent bin. Picked up the Anima series, and got as far as issue #11...

But then, I get into a conversation on point-whoring and using the " question mark" image for creators, which in turn inspired me to go out and fill in a bunch of the gaps on creator images.

Gah. OK, I need to reel in the ADD, and focus on one thing. Of course, I do have a free weekend coming up...

The 30k mark

Well, it looks like I've gotten over the 30k mark on wikipoints... all in under a month. And in looking back at where they came from, I've got some nice work out there, so those points were definitely well earned: a half-dozen character bios and just over 100 plot summaries.

Can't say enough about how much I am enjoying this. Loading plot summaries and character bios on the site has gotten me to re-read a ton of gems I haven't read in half a decade or so. Just finished up a pretty comprehensive page on Aztek, and I forgot how much I liked that book. No surprise, given it's Grant Morrison

My next mission is to move onto Showcase. I still have Showcase '96 that I want to finish up, and I also want to dig out my run of New Talent Showcase to get some info into that volume.

On pace so far....

As Christmas comes to a close, I am happy to say I am on track with my 1,000 wikipoints a day. After ripping through Showcase '93, '94, and '95, I found that Showcase '96 really didn't hold my attention. A foray into the 25 issue Hourman series led to my first tactical nuke: the entry on Hourman III. I got to fill out a lot of blank supporting character entries, and created new entries on Hourman's Timeship and some of the supporting cast.

Now, I know I should go back to Showcase '96 to knock that off the list, but in going through the site, I found a lack of info on Anthro, especially his 60s 6 issue run (which actually had nothing attached to it: no creators, characters, etc). So I am now living in prehistoric times, with Anthro and his family.
