My first try at coloring

I can't draw (well), but I thought it would be fun to try some coloring. Using a creative commons picture by Arnaud Poitevin, I colored and shaded using GIMP. As the original is licensed under a creative commons attribution share-alike license, mine is also. I haven't colored the car or the background.

 My version

I might do some more work on it later, but what do you guys think of it so far? Any advice from more experienced artists?

Edit: Okay, I made some changes and colored the rest, what do you think?

Edit 2: As per Roxanne's suggestion, I made the car yellow.

It does look pretty good with yellow.

nice approach so far, especially with GIMP, next step, 'textureising' :)

a few touch ups here and there like on the arm where the folds on the jacket are you can make a slightly bigger shadow line with a darker color  in the same shape as the line. (it obviously doesn't make sense telling you) but for the most part a good job so far. just getting the basics down alone are pretty rough.

I am impressed :D
never studied that art stuff in that aspect, its neat what you did.
What is GIMP?

Thanks everyone for the kind words and advice.

@Om1kron: So put a shadow below each line, like the fold is casting a shadow? Should it be darker than the other shadows?

@Silkcuts: GIMP is sort of a free version of Photoshop, although I'm sure most Photoshop users would disagree with that characterization. It works for me, though.

@Jotham:  Cool, how would I get my hands on it?

@Silkcuts: You can download it at gimp.org

@Jake Fury: @ComicMan24: Thanks, guys.

I started doing it, it does look better. It's a little hard to tell unless you zoom in, but it looks good. Thanks for the advice.

I like the edit a lot.  Great choice of colors.  Very natural looking, enjoyed the choice of shadows.  Not sure if its me or does he sky slowly get lighter the closer it gets to the car?

Posted by Jotham
@Silkcuts: It gets lighter in the top right corner, I tried to show the sun was just out of frame.

@Jotham:  I see it now, my eyes where playing tricks.  I knew the blue was getting lighter... not sure why I was so off on the direction.
nice touch :D

@Silkcuts: Thanks. It's probably an accidental optical illusion. I lightened the car right near the edge to try to show the reflection from the light.

@Jotham:  That must of been what I was seeing.

As you well know, Jotham, coloring is not my area of expertize but...

I would like to see the car in another color (YELLOW...hint, hint). :-)

Posted by Jotham
@Roxanne Starr: If I get any time, I'll see what it looks like. I like the blue, but you probably know better.

@Jotham:
Very very good for your first time...

the colors are good but I really like the artwork

@GODofART: Thanks, man.

@Hi I'm New: Yeah, I lucked out by finding a good picture that was easy to color.

the yellow in the second really makes everything pop out. quite good, especially for a first try.

Thanks for endorsing my suggestion, HIM! When the car was that blue color, it clashed with the girl's hat.

Jotham has been known to buck my critiques, but in the end...he always finds out that I am never wrong. <<cough, cough>>
