Appearances: Who wants to look normal?

I was just thinking, that a lot of the younger X-Men that are still alive today are "visually distinct". Their skin is a weird color or they have some physical mutation.

But I cannot recall this being addressed for the most part within the comics. we see a lot of characters that go through the drama of wanting a cure to look normal because of all the problems looking weird has caused them (See Beast). This new generation is more physically mutated than any generation before them, but we haven't really seen the characters discuss these mutations at all. No one talks about Indra and Loa's facial marks, Bling! being a walking diamond or even Anole being green and scaley on one side.

I think it is safe to say that these students are not exactly going to be judging each other by their physical appearance, but are we to assume that they are all okay with their physical mutation? Is Rockslide fine with his condition or does he secretly wish that he could be normal like Ben Grimm often does.

This is also affecting the new "Lights," Transonic and Zero both have physical mutations, but for the most part they don't complain and are just okay with what their lives are now. Meanwhile we see a character created just to kill himself because of his physical mutation.

Here is a list of some of the Physically Mutated Youth

So many of them are physically different but with a few exceptions (Mercury short anthology appearance) it really isn't addressed their opinions on what they look like. How many do you think would want to look normal given the choice?

I wonder if they think their appearances are normal, having grown up with Nightcrawler and such as heroes/mentors. With less mutants around, though, I agree that it should be more of an issue, as they really stand out now.

They should all get some self help from morlocks....

@BuddyBulson: That could be one of Wolverine classes

Morlocks don't think they look ugly at all.... They Think the humans are ugly. The mutants that look like five miles of bad road are considered beautiful to morlocks. Something Mercury could learn from.

There are quite a few X-Men who are abnormal looking though by their extreme attractiveness.

What really bothered me was when Indra went home and it was no big deal. I thought some reference would have been fine.

@RazzaTazz: "I - I just feel like such a freak with these huge breasts and flawless skin and hips that don't quit!"

@jordama: Mutant self Esteem 101 (for the physically distinguished youth).

Really though, you would think that would be more of an issue or at least something discussed. I remember it being such a huge thing back in the day to have a physical mutation, but maybe it's a sign of the times. Either way, teens and self esteem is always a point to be touched on.

@lady_toyano: that is exactly how i feel.

the answer is

Morrison was feeling the same way while he was taking LSD during his run on New X-men.

@yumyumbubblegum: LOL, I forgot they were both Morrison characters

Didn't Elixir want to look like that ?

Posted by jordama

@AgeofHurricane: If I remember correctly, it happened after he was attacked by Rahne and it was a side effect of him healing himself. They said that it was a subconscious thing because he wanted to be the "golden boy" or something like that.

@jordama:Which is what i kind of meant, never read anywhere of "they" saying it was a sub-concious thing though, i just remember Dani speculating the possibilty that he did that to himself on purpose.

@AgeofHurricane: They have said however that he lacks complete control over his coloring, hence why he has had difficulty maintaining the gold hue and often becomes black. He might have done it to himself but he cannot undue it as of yet.

@jordama: ...Sorry, all this talk is making me emotional as to why Marvel hasn't brought back Academy X/New X-Men back yet...*runs to the bathroom*

*sniff*

@AgeofHurricane: there there

They technically brought them back to school in WatX.

And I try to keep them alive through blogs :)

Posted by AgeofHurricane

@jordama: You're right, they did didn't they ?...(sort of)

Thanks, you're doing a fantastic job. (i try to keep them a live through my MG fan-fic.)

Posted by jordama

@AgeofHurricane: Only way they could justify a Young X-Men book again was to have Wolverine in it :/

@jordama: I KNOW ! -_-

Generation Hope's not even cutting it. Still have my hopes for Astonishing X-Men though...(Armor, X-23 and i THINK it's Blindfold will be appearing in this current arc, alternate versions though.
