Today's Pull #3

Sorry to anybody who actually reads these about the lateness, but such is the monetary woes of going from a steady job to student-bum status. Anyway this is what I picked up this week:

Vertigo

  • American Vampire #1: Now you may remember a few weeks ago I picked up issue #23, sure It was easy to understand and I didn't feel I needed to read older issues to catch up but it still kind of felt like reading a half told story so today I decided to pick up #1. So what can I say about this issue? It involves Scott Snyder (You know him as the Bat god) the 1920's (that's stetsons, tommy guns and dames). Stephen King (you know, the most successful author of all time) westerns (more stetsons, six shooters and "howdy") and Vampires ( the kind that would rip your throat out before they would buy you flowers). That's some of my favortie subject matter combined with two of my favourite writers. Throughout the book you Skinner Sweet oozes danger without actually doing anything till later on in the book., that IMO is the sign of a superbly written villain. If I had one gripe about the book it's that there isn't a whole lot of Vampirism, but It is eluded to and you can guess where it's coming from ant it certanly intruges you in to coming back for issue #2.

  • 100 Bullets Vol2: Wow it finally came, unreliable second hand buying is unreliable. I haven't read this yet but I will be jumping in to it this weekend. Cant wait.

  • Fables #2: One of my favourite genres of fiction is urban fantasy, I just like the idea of talking old mythology and putting it in a modern urban environment, it's one of the thing's I like about The Sandman, Hellblazer and Wonder Woman. For example in Wonder Woman in stead of a crazy blood soaked Roman warrior Ares, the god of war, is instead a successful arms dealer. This is what I think Fables does best, it takes age old characters and grounds them in a gritty environment with a horrific murder mystery at it's core. One of the things I dislike about the book is Snow White, she is a bit of a heartless shrew that I kind of find irritating.
 Image
  • Thief of Thieves #1: Well there was some mixed review about this book on the Vine but I have to say, I rather enjoyed it. This is a cool crime book with a Skybound twist, what I mean by that is if you read a few books from Images Skybound imprint then you start to notice a similar tone throughout some of them, a kind of witty humer if you will and I think it suits this book perfectly, each scene has a little cation at the top of the page and I couldent help but smile after reading each one. In my opinion the main protagonist, Redmond, seems to be a very likeable person, which is kind of strange of a career criminal.

  • Alpha Girl #1: Well this wasn't really what I had expected. I was under the impression this was a zombie book but there isn't a single undead in this book, there is however a group of woman that have been turned batsh!t crazy but a chepo cosmetics company. The book is quite enjoyable with it's coarse over the top humor but I would but the main character dosen't get much panel time and she seems more interesting than the actual story it's self.

  • Artifacts #14: Ron Marz is amazing, I'm sorry but he is. I cant help but think if Ron was in charge of the DC reboot how would it have went down? the Top Cow universe has just had a reboot and sure it took a long time getting here but Ron does it far more smoothly than how DC went about it. All the stuff that went before still happened but now we have a different status quo to tell different storys and it's always a treat to see The Darkness drawn by Stjepan Sejic.
  • Haunt #21: Since Haunt got a new creative team a few issues back some of the fans have been complaining about the book turning from the espionage rout and becoming more of a monster book, but I have to say I kind of like it better that way. It feels like it fleshes the world out more and it distinguishes it self from other books, it also means we get more of Tubman who is possibly the deadliest hobo/hippy alive. Fox's art is perfect for this time of book, he makes Kurt actually look like a ghost and Haunt a lot more creepy looking and thats how I like him.

  •  Madman: All New Giant Size Super Ginchy Special: I'm not even sure how to describe Mad Man to people who dont read it, heh it's just crazy, Just go out and by an issue.

BOOM!
  • Adventure Time #1: Thats right, I got it. I have no idea what's going on here but there was rainbow coloured unicorns, tree houses and fist bumps, it was awesome. Also sick battle burns.

  • Irredeemable #6: The Plutonian is one sick son of a mitch. Each time you start to read one of these issues it feels like a countdown starts, it's only a matter of time before he catches up to the Paradigm and kills them all, you'v just got to wonder how much time they'v got left. I really liked the little flash back of the children's plague, it's such a cool idea for a virus and something I'v never seen before.

Dynamite
Dark Horse
  •  Hellboy Vol 1: Ok so I'm trying to get in to the Hellboy-verse and this, I suppose, is the best place to start. I read the first issue and I love the noirish feel of the art and Hellboys inner monologues, it really sets the tone for this very well written book. There's some good action in this issue between Hellboy and a creepy frog monster but I dont feel the story gets lost behind the punches, so that's good. It's a shame I wasn't able to geet Lobster Johnson or a B.P.R.D book but I'll get them next time.
Ok so that's my pick of the week, questions, query's, likes, dislikes?

Is American Vampire really that good? I've been thinking about checking it out, but anything new and vampire-related kinda turns me off, with the whole modern vampire hysteria and all :/

You'll love him if you like sadistic bastards. Some didn't like the series after the trade or so. Hopefully you will.

Alright, thanks for the input. I'll probably pick up the first trade sometime soon then.
