Best Titles of The DCnU

Without a doubt the biggest news story of 2011 was the DCU Reboot and while I'm not completely happy with it, I must say that some amazing books have come out of it. Here's a list of the titles that I've been enjoying the most.

List items

  • This was definitely my most anticipated title of the DCnU and it has yet to disappoint, in fact, month to month it somehow manages to be even more awesome from issue to issue.

  • Realistically this book's tied with it's sister book so really consider this as #1b. Scott Snyder is in the midst of creating another superb title under his belt. And Yanick Paquette turning in the art of his career certainly doesn't hurt a bit.

  • This was a title I initially had no interest in. I read an interview with Azz about his direction for the book and it intrigued me enough to go out and get issue one. Now it's far and away one of my most anticipated books month to month. I absolutely love what Azzarello/Chiang have done with Diana and can't wait to see where they continue to take her in the near future. Seriously how come it seems so difficult for writers to get a hold on Diana? Well that question aside I'm overjoyed that Azz/Chiang not only get her but they do so in every manner possible .

  • If you had told me that the main Batman title written by Scott Snyder with pencils by Greg Capullo would not only not be my favorite book of the reboot but not even in my top 3 I'd have laughed in your face, but here we are. Now despite it not being my top pick that's to say nothing of it's overall quality. Because make no mistake Snyder IS crafting a PERFECT Batman story. Much like with Animal Man/Swamp Thing this title should really be 2B alongside Wonder Woman.

  • Once again this is a character/book I had zero interest in both before/during the early days of the reboot. I bought issue one on a whim and was absolutely blown away by Williams' always superb art. The writing wasn't too shabby either, and has continued to improve from issue to issue. I always saw Kate as a Bruce clone but now I firmly appreciate the unique niche she occupies in the Bat Family.

  • This was a book a LONGTIME in coming. And I must say it was definitely worth the wait! I was more than a little intrepid about reading this story because well, you really don't know what James Robinson you're going to get these days. Luckily the James Robinson we get is the master scribe who crafted the seminal Starman series. You can feel his passion for the character, story and medium permeating every page of this book. And Cully Hamner's art certainly doesn't hurt in the least.

  • I've always liked Jonah Hex, but until this year I never read a single Jonah Hex comic. When it was announced that Hex would be going to Gotham I was more than bit skeptical about whether or not this would work. Well I never should've doubted Palmiotti/Gray because their run on All-Star Western has been nothing short of great. And their use of Gotham's rich history has only made the book better.

  • This is one of those comics that has no illusions of grandeur. With this book Jeff Lemire's not trying to impress literary critics or prove the validity of the medium. He's just telling the craziest, most fun, action packed story he can. And may God bless him for it. This book is one of the most insane comics I've ever read and somehow from month to month it just gets crazier. I mean in the first issue alone Lemire introduces more intriguing concepts then most books do in an entire volume.

  • Much like Frankenstein, this book is a book that fully embraces all of the insanity that comics can contain. The set up's pretty simple, the DCU meets D&D. Need one reason to check this out? Last page of issue one features sword wielding raptors cold sucker punching a man out of the panels into your face.

  • This' one of the books I was highly anticipating. I mean Peter Milligan writing Vertigo mainstays like John Constantine and Shade the Changing Man? Yes Please. So far the books been a bit of a slow burn and definitely in the classic Vertigo vein. Which is quite to my liking. Mikel Janin's also turning in some very nice art and I can definitely see him growing positively from issue to issue.
