Rhodey's new armor

I for one feel it was about high time he got a new, sleeker, more powerful suit. In issue 3 of Iron Man 2.0 it's finally happened. So, what do y'all think of the new digs?

I have to say the refresh is a nice change of pace.  It may not be perfect, but making such a drastic change now gives the writers/artists more license to make more changes down the line.  War Machine's look was kind of static, he basically looked exactly the same as when I first started reading comics 20 years ago.  I think being able to change the armor will be a good thing in the long run, it will allow the character to grow more.  I'm sure it will change again and probably future versions will incorporate old elements.  Just look at how many permutations of Tony Stark's armor there have been.  Didn't he have cloaking and energy whips at one point?

While I'm all for an update on War Machine's look, this does seem to be a cash-in on the recent films' War Machine look. It doesn't look awful, mind you, but I do wish it was a bit more distinctive from the Iron Man suit.

Give him nanite-liquid armor and let him have a sleek look and when in battle transform it into a beast version with plasma canons and ion grenades on his shoulders.

I totally see where you're coming from. But tanks aren't fighting wars anymore, hi tech CPUs are. So I get what Spencer was aiming for. It's certainly a change though.

I liked him under Greg Pak best so far personally, particularly how his tech worked, interfaced, transformed ect. i think it was too soon for a new armor " look " for him, as well as for Rescue for that matter, and was just promotional towards Iron Mans redesign that ran with the release of Iron Man 2. Then again it seems recent Rhodey books have problems staying afloat, so if this helps I'm behind it. I like the story's so far in Iron Man 2.0 despite it, and the arts good enough to carry it, I'll say that much.
I may pick it up after all this Fear Itself BS ends, but as of now I'm done with this book. Which I hate to say because I absolutely LOVE Nick Spencer, but this title's lost it's focus. The last issue dealing with Palmer Addley was pointless and one of the worst things I've read all year, and the Fear Itself issues felt totally needless to me.

I don't think its the right type of armor for a guy named War Machine. I liked his old armor that was just bristling with weapons because that what he was, a walking arsenal of weapons. But it was time he got a new armor upgrade, i just think this one is too sleeked down for War Machine.

Agree, I like the overall design but agree it could be a bit more visually distinct from Tony's. Spec wise they're night and day, but hey, you can see specs in a pic lol

I like it. He went from the brute armor to a stealth, use your brain, armor. To me the developed armor reflects a focus on further developing his character, and the writers are treating it that way. "Evolve or Die" right?

@Soldier zero:
I've always compared Tony to a jet and Rhodey to a tank. Now Rhodey's evolved into a stealth bomber. I think this armor is appropriate for these days and times and for the new challenges Rhodey will face. To combat modern terrorism and subterfuge a  new approach has had to be employed in the real world, why not in comics as well?

@Green Skin:
I'm kind of an Iron Man armor geek and I assure that Tony's bleeding edge armor and Rhodey's new armor two entirely different beasts. For starters, the bleeding edge chameleon tech and ghost tech are in a beta stage and unique to Rhodey. Tony's also made Rhodey's suit undetectable by any method other than sight, hence him including the chameleon tech. Rhodey's suit has two settings, infiltration and combat. In combat mode it will make use of traditional munitions so I'm sure it has guns tucked away all over, as Tony hinted in 2.0 #3. Rhodey's new armor must alternate between these two modes and has a finite limit to how much he can use his infiltration features. Each requires a large amount of repulsor energy, and can only be used individually. Tony has no such limit due to his suit and RT hub embedded in his chest serving as a self sustaining perpetual energy source. Tony's armor is a alive and lives in his bones, he is the iron man armor, even more so than when he was using the Extremis armor. Tony's armor is about as thin as the first layer of skin, but ridiculously durable, it also has shape shifting capabilities and various other features we can only dream about. Seeing as Fraction's a dialog over action guy, we've yet to fully see what this armor's fully capable of. I'll say this. The unique relationship between Tony and this armor makes it one of the most powerful  human developed weapons in the Marvel U (it's so advanced that this tech is still used by Iron Lad's people far into the future) and completely unique and incapable of being replicated in this era.

When it comes to costume changes, especially things like armor I'm a function over form kind of guy. I think more than any the features, tech and potential applications of this suit have intrigued me.
"
Usually when I explained the difference between Iron Man and War Machine to a non-comic fan I used to compare the armors to combat planes, to me IM looked something close to a F-22, very sleek, fast and manuvrable; while WM was closer to an A-10, sturdier, slower and armored to the teeth.
This new armor seem to blur the line a little too much for my tastes, but I've enough experience regarding comics to know that at least the benefit of the doubt must be allowed. As a general rule I prefer function over form any day of the week and this is what scares me, this suit looks a bit too sleek and stylish.

In my eyes, no he isn't the "new Iron Man" I prefer to consider him as a individual character.

@JonesDeini:      I'm normally a form over function kind of guy as well, but with Rhodey it's different.   I think he needs a little more than just different colors to distinguish him from Stark.  Hopefully seeing this suit in action will show otherwise, but it looks like it'll operate just like Stark's suit.  It looks like it's got guns that pop out of compartments, so hopefully there are some good weapon systems streamlined into it.   I just really hope he has more extensive weapon systems than Stark's armor, otherwise what's the point.

Lame!  War Machine isn't suppose to look sleek, he's suppose to look like he can take on tank battalions and blow sh1t all to hell.!  Unless he's sporting some kind of heavy ordinance, it's just not a true War Machine armor.

Soldier zero got it right, this looks like a palette swap of the Iron Man armor.

I see your argument but I disagree. I think this armor is distinct enough not to be confused with Tony's. I also like the functions on this armor more than the former one. I concede that the shoulder mounted weapons served to further differentiate it and I wish this armor had a more instantly recognizable feature like that. Tony's armor is sleeker and looks more organic. Rhodey's new armor still looks like an armor suit and like it has a heavier feel and more heft to it despite being trimmed down. I'm sure casual readers or people who don't know the character will write him off as the black Iron Man, but when haven't they? I can't wait to see how he implements the ghost tech into his missions.
