The Comics Creators Pantheon...

So I was checking out the interwebs and came across a letter column on Ifanboy in which the question of who makes up a definitive 12 member pantheon of comics. I know everybody has their own personal opinions of this, so I think it'd be really interesting to see what you all think. The response to said letter was this.

1. Jack Kirby

2. Joe Simon

3. Stan Lee

4. Will Eisner

5. Roy Thomas

6. Jerry Robinson

7. Bill Finger

8. Alan Moore

9. Frank Miller

10. Steve Ditko

11. Jerry Siegel

12. Joe Shuster

Personally I'd throw in Gardner Fox, Grant Morrison, Claremont, Byrne, Adams, or Milligan/Gaiman (both suffer from the Moore shadow and haven't broken out of it quite as strongly as Morrison has) and I'd remove Thomas, Robinson, Siegel/Shuster, and in a pinch Simon. This is really a tough call because with all GOAT lists one must consider the impact of a removing a legend, but also what later candidates were able to do with the works of others. So While objectively Kirby/Lee would be a nigh universal #1 lock, for me I'd personally place Alan Moore at the head of my pyramid. Also, I'm sure a lack of intimate familiarity with the works of the Silver Age/Golden Age creators will certainly influence me to produce higher rankings for a Moore/Miller/Morrison.

Marvel Man vs Captain Marvel...

I came across this very interesting video debate over at iFanboy. This is definitely a question I've been pondering myself for a while now. There are fewer and fewer Superhero books that the general populace would find appropriate for all ages. While I can identify with wanting "grown up stories" featuring my childhood heroes I can also see how this situation makes it a bit more difficult (among many others) for growing new readers. In the 90's I could transition from Marvel's kid line of books into Uncanny or Amazing Spidey pretty smoothly. I don't feel the same ease of transition is nearly as possible into either Marvel/DC's mainlines now.

Superheroes As Rappers...

Some of you may be familiar with a strange little movement that start a few years ago with artists reinterpreting classic albums themed around various superheroes. well the good people at Long boxes on 22s have gone the extra miles and come up with track lists and lyrical excerpts from these albums. October? Perfect time to appreciate Frazer Irving's work!

Man oh man...I LOVE this guy's art!
Xombi was possibly his best work yet!

Irving's without a doubt one of my favorite artists of all time and he's only been in the game for roughly 5 or so years. He's already one of the best active, young guns and only has room to grow. His work on Morrison's Klarion, Rozum's Xombi, Batman and Robin/Return of Bruce Wayne, and other projects is simply majestic and quietly has been pushing the envelope of what superhero art can be. And his use of color is truly awe inspiring and something I can say I hadn't experienced as a reader until I encountered his work. His work on Xombi with John Rozum earlier this year is a huge part of what elevated that book to being the title of the year for me. Can't wait to see what he brings to the table on Robinson's Shade this month! The fact that he isn't working on a regular monthly in the DCnU is an astounding oversight to me. I mean could you imagine him on JLD (no disrespect to Janin)?! I ran across this article examining some of the technical aspects of his art that I thought was really quite well written. Anyways, enjoy the article and if you're as big a fan of his art as I am feel free to comment why!

Really Well Done Casey Jones Fan Film

If you're like me you loved TMNT as a kid and Casey Jones was a big part of that. A friend of mine brought this film to my intention and I must say it's pretty well done. So yeah, check it out and drop a little donation if you feel like it, you get a DVD for donations of $20 or more. Enjoy!

The man!
