Top 5 Most Anticipated Comics 23/10/13

This is a new feature that I will be doing each week where I give talk briefly about the top five comics that I'm most looking forward to this week.

This was originally posted as afeature on my website Imagination Centre (here).

List items

  • Velvet #1

    I haven't read a huge amount of Ed Brubaker's creator owned stuff yet, but I have been meaning to give Fatale a try for some time, and enjoyed the bits that I've read from Criminal and Incognito. With his latest creator owned series starting this week I thought I'd give the series a try, as bar from the fact that it's bound to be great, it has Steve Epting who worked with Brubaker on Captain America doing the artwork. On top of all that the fact that this is a spy thriller also really interests me, as some of my most favourite stories over the last few years have been spy related.

  • Wolverine and the X-Men #37

    Battle of the Atom has been a series that I've been enjoying since it started, as although it hasn't always been amazing, with the progression being slow for most of the first half it has since started to kick into a higher gear as of All-New X-Men #17. In saying that the level did drop slightly in last weeks Uncanny X-Men #13 instalment, though even though that issue wasn't outstanding it wasn't completely terrible, having some good points, with the main one being the brilliant development that it added to the story, which I'm hoping this issue plays off perfectly. I also hope that the cover and solicit don't lie, and that we get a explosive fight.

  • Indestructible Hulk #14

    Indestructible Hulk has been amongst my favourite current series' since it started, as although it has had a few minor problems along the way, Mark Waid has taken the Hulk to new levels, producing some of the best Hulk stories that I've read in a while. The current story, Agent of T.I.M.E. has also really interested me, as although it has also had some moments that haven't been brilliant, overall it has been a fantastic story so far. It is however this issue that I've been most looking forward to, as with this issue taking the story to the time of Hulk's creation it is bound to have some very exciting moments along the way, and I'm sure Waid will use this to the story's best advantage.

  • Justice League #24

    Forever Evil has been an amazing event so far, as although it has still to fully kick off, it has had some very exciting and entertaining moments so far, being very suspenseful and dramatic. I have however not been too interested in some of the tie-ins that are coming out, as bar Forever Evil: Arkham War the Justice League tie-ins are the only ones I'm really excited about. This issue in particular looks to be very interesting, as apart from it telling the origin of Ultraman, I am looking forward to seeing the explosive encounter between him and Black Adam that was teased in Forever Evil #2.

  • Iron Man #17

    This is probably the most unexpected series for me to add onto a most anticipated list, as the series has been very poor since it started, and although the Secret Origin of Tony Stark has had some brilliant moments it has also overall been rather poor and very inconsistent. It is however the fact that this is the final issue of the story, and the fact that it promises to reveal the true secret behind Tony's origin that has grabbed my attention, as whether the issue itself is good or bad, the development is something that I for one can't miss, and it's bound to shake up the Marvel Universe.

@broo1232: Thanks. It's an idea that I've had for my site for a while, and was meaning to start last week but couldn't find the time. I do however from now plan on doing it weekly.

Yeah I understand you not getting Velvet until trade as your budget is tight as it is, and I wouldn't recommend the Iron Man series anyway, though am personally looking forward to this issue due to the reasons stated.

@johnkmccubbin91: it's a good idea and I think you've done it very well.

I like the look of Velvet a lot, but as you said my budget is tight. I'm interested in what the twist is, but I think I'll just read up on it and the series sounds bad enough as it is. (although not that bad just I've not been impressed with what I've seen)

@broo1232: Thanks very much.

Yeah it does seem a very interesting series, and I have to say a lot of what Image has been bringing out lately has been brilliant. Yeah it has been quite bad, and I'll most likely be dropping it again after this issue.

Brubaker and Epting teamed up on an Image comic??! I'll have to look into this one. There Captain America run was fantastic! I wish they where still doing it...

Anyway, this is pretty cool. I look forward to seeing more.

@johnkmccubbin91: No problem.

Can I confess that I've never read an Image series (although have been meaning to try Lazarus at some point and Jupiter's legacy), as really my only non-marvel/DC comic is Astro City (which is truly beautiful), but Velvet definitely has my interest and I'll be trying it in trade form. I'm not interested and the bad reviews it's been getting from you and others have completely turned me off.

@broo1232: I used to get quite a few as well as Dark Horse and Dynamite stuff, but I recently cut a lot off to make room for Marvel and DC stuff, as although most of the Image series are better I just prefer Marvel and DC overall for some reason. (Astro City is in a way DC as it's Vertigo). I would recommend both Lazarus and Jupiter's Legacy as they are both amazing, and Velvet should be good. I have also been meaning to try Brubaker's other Image series Fatale, but will be getting the trades for that. Yes it has had some good moments, but like a lot of Gillen's work it tends to be poor for the majority of the time, and I just hope that this isn't the case with Origins II.

@johnkmccubbin91: I consider Vertigo to be different to DC even though I know it is owned by it as it has no connection main DC and no title actually has a connection to another. Astro City was originally another company anyway, but got moved to Vertigo anyway. I have heard both are really good as well, but waiting until at least the first trades are out for both of them. I liked Gillen's pre-marvel now! work a lot especially JIM and UXM (I really liked most of it aside from some of the AVX stuff), but he's gone down hill since then.

@broo1232: Fair enough, I personally class them different but connected. Also Vertigo and DC have traded characters a lot as that's where Swamp Thing, Animal Man and Constantine made their names. I think DC were actually considering full amalgamation of the two at one point. He has, as his JIM and UXM stuff were good (though not always brilliant).

@johnkmccubbin91: You could see it either away. I know they've traded characters, but that trading isn't exactly happening anymore and no characters are actually connected anymore to each other (Constantine and Swamp thing were). I love what I read of JIM and UXM was good, but not as good at points.

@broo1232: You could. Yeah as I said I believe they were trying a full amalgamation but now I think they're bringing out new stuff for Vertigo and keeping them separate, which is how it should be. His JIM run was good, not as much at times, as was his UXM but it was better than his Marvel NOW! stuff has been so far.

@johnkmccubbin91: I agree on all of that and all of his Marvel Now! stuff has been fairly weak in comparison.
