Superman's Most Impressive Victories

Superman's been in his fair share of donnybrook's over the years and has come out on top in some impressive fisticuffs. Here are some of what I feel to be his most awe-inspiring of victories:

List items

  • Where Superman felled Solaris the Tyrant Sun, died, returned, and beat a super-powered Lex Luthor. Even dying Superman can beat his most dangerous foes like the cosmic super computer and his arch-nemesis. An exciting battle and a brilliant end to All-Star Superman.

  • The last adventure of Pre-Crisis Superman. Mr. Mxyzptlk, whose magic powers have always been greater than Superman's, has decided to quit with the pranks and get with real evil and horror. Superman stops him by turning the phantom zone projector on the imp. Mxyzptlk panics and says his own name backwards to try and return to the 5th Dimension. The opposing pulls of the Phantom Zone and the 5th Dimension rip him in half making Superman a killer. He exposes himself to gold Kryptonite and quits in penance.

  • In this issue, Superman wrestles the corrupted angel Asmodel. Like Jacob before him, Superman proves his physical prowess as well as his spiritual purity by grappling with part of the angelic host. Superman's righteous fury smites the proud angel and sends him packing down to Lucifer.

  • Superman meets super-dragon. A Kryptonian Flame-Dragon attacks Metropolis and gains super powers from Earth's yellow sun just as Superman does. With the combined powers of Superman and a dragon the fire-breather overwhelms the man of steel. Superman is only able to defeat the beast by flying him back in time to the age of dinosaurs. The rest is history's problem!

  • Superman does his best John Wayne impersonation with this one. He challenges eight Kryptonian escapees from the Phantom Zone to an old west gun duel using Phantom Zone rays. The winner gets Earth the loser or losers get to become wraiths. Supes wins it by cheating. He uses his heat vision to melt the criminals' ray guns before the duel begins and then zaps 'em. All for the greater good, of course.

  • A scientist discovers how to use cosmic rays to advance human evolution. He uses the rays on himself to evolve into The Ultimate Man with immeasurable power over all of creation. The Ultimate Man believes he's defeated Superman and goes back to advance his evolution to the highest degree, but Supes returns to overload The Ultimate Man with cosmic rays. This causes The Ultimate Man to pass right over the highest degree of evolution and back to the start of the cycle: A lowly ape. The stress kills him. ...whoops...

  • My favorite Bizarro fight. Bizarro returns to Earth with new-found powers like ice-vision and flame-breath to kidnap Lois Lane and repopulate a Bizarro-World he believes was destroyed. Superman learns that Bizarro-World is just fine and punches Bizarro all the way from Earth back to his planet in reverse direction of how Bizarro ended up on Earth to prove to the monster that everything was alright. Now THAT's a good punch.

  • After going undercover as one of his own enemies, Superman finally discovers the location of the planet that is home to his most deadly cosmic enemies: The Superman Revenge Squad. Armed only with a mysterious pack strapped to his chest, Superman attacks the planet head-on. They fire their most devastating missiles at him and he allows them to connect taking the full blast. When all is said and done, Superman is without a scratch and the planet is surrounded by a mist that will cause amnesia to anyone who tries to leave the atmosphere. Superman traps the Revenge Squad on their own planet and calls it a day.

  • Superman stumbles upon a town that has been driven mad by a piece of future technology that allows their minds to do or create anything they can think of. They devise a plan to conquer the planet because they think they know better thanks to their new powers. Superman has to do battle with three of the townspeople: One who becomes a cosmic knight, one who becomes a future soldier, and one who becomes Moses. Superman is able to triangulate where the piece of future technology is cloaked and destroys it to render the town powerless. Maybe one day humans will be ready for that power. One day...

  • Superman is challenged by a knight who has super-strength greater than Superman's and a sword that can slice through even Supes' invulnerable costume. Superman takes him on the old fashioned way with a sword and a shield bearing the Kryptonian flag. He knocks his armored enemy into the water where he can't swim only to discover the knight is a robot. Superman dons the robot's armor and uses it to track the creator.

  • Superman has even defeated a villain he'd never seen face-to-face. Renegade, alien scientist Troxx-55 builds a matter transmitter that allows him to trade places with Superman for a short time. While Superman is trapped on Troxx's planet, the intergalactic fiend wreaks mayhem on Earth. Superman beats him by first concocting a clever scheme to protect his friends and then sitting in an anti-crime ray chair (no kidding) so Troxx would appear in his place when they switched back. He didn't even need to throw a punch.

  • I know a lot of time and energy is wasted on the "Who Would Win in a Fight: Hulk or Superman" debate, and I'm not trying to add fuel to the fire or anything. ...But Superman clubs the Hulk in this issue and grabs a "W" for DC with his 90's mullet and all.

  • This was pretty memorable from when I was a kid. Superman returns to life and faces the Cyborg Superman who has just committed genocide by wiping Coast City off the map. He punches the Cyborg through the chest and then shakes the dude to pieces using super speed. Why didn't anyone else think of that?
