I know that some people have a hard time with Kryptonite because they think it's silly for the world's most powerful man to be weak to a "glowing rock." I like to think of it as Superman being continually haunted by the death of his native planet. Krypton's destruction is what made him Superman by forcing him to Earth where he gained his miraculous powers. It's also a great tragedy since he'll never get to know his own people and since he will always be a bit of an outsider on Earth. To me, Kryptonite has always been the physical representation of this. The home that had to die so he could be great haunts him and brings him nothing but weakness. Besides, it's a classic piece of his mythology. Can you actually imagine reading Superman comics without any Kryptonite?

@Kairan1979:

Yeah, for a girl who says she misses Krypton and her way of life she seems strangely adverse to forging a relationship with the only other Kryptonian on the planet. I get that she's maybe a bit off-put by her infant cousin suddenly being older than she is, but is that really any weirder than anything else she's gone through so far? I'm hoping they get a chance to reconcile all this during the Hel on Earth crossover.

Superman isn't the last kryptonian.It's Supergirl who is the last true kryptonian.Supergirl is the only one who can pass down the kryptonian heritage.She's the one who lived amongst them.Superman doesn't know shit because he was just a baby during the time.

Only she can preserve kryptonian history and not superman.

Supergirl does have the advantage of having lived as Kryptonian. However, to be fair, Superman does have super-memory recall so he can remember everything that happened when he was a baby on Krypton.

I believe the very first version of Lex Luthor was a mad scientist. A noble profession...

I like Supergirl AND Damian Wayne. I wouldn't take the whole "Last Son of Krypton" thing too seriously. There's a reason more Kryptonians tend to pop out of the woodwork in Superman comics over time. It's because people WANT to see them. I'd agree that the others should be used sparingly, but Kara should stick around. She's a great icon for young girls.

@JV:

Glad to hear that the New 52 got you back into comics, and that you're introducing them to your kid. I just became an uncle and my first presents to the nephew just happened to be a Superman plushie and a Spider-Man plushie (I don't want to lead him into becoming a DC fan, I want him to make the choice himself). I hoped that DC's reboot would lure some new readers in or some readers back. It seems like it worked to some degree.

@azza04:

Thanks, azza! I'm hoping Lobdell starts to turn things around on Superman. That book has been flat since Grounded.

The only thing have to add is: I can't wait to see the Superman/ Steve Trevor showdown in Trinity War...

A comic book Annual is supposed to be a "special" oversized issue of your favorite monthly title put out once a year. So we have Superman Annual #1 this year and we'll probably get Superman Annual #2 next year. Back in the day, Annuals reprinted some classic stories and gave you special content like character pin-ups or maps of the Fortress of Solitude. These days Annuals give you an extra story that usually stands on its own.

I heard that this Annual, in particular, was supposed to be an introduction to a Daemonite crossover in the Superman, Grifter, and Hawkman titles. However, DC changed their minds and now we're getting a different crossover through Superman, Superboy, and Supergirl instead. So this issue is just a stand-alone story for now, but is probably important to keep in mind for future Daemonite and Helspont stories. I hope that answers your question.
