ComicVine Newbie

Howdy, everyone!  I am jakob187, and I wanted to just make an introductory blog to introduce myself.

I'm a regular at Giant Bomb (one of the top 3 forum posters), and I've decided to start splitting my time between that and Comic Vine.  I'm a big music, movie, and video game fan.  It's been a longtime since I've used the word "comic fan", as I've been out of the loop for a long time.  I still pick up the occassional graphic novel and such, but I ran into a problem.  See, back in my day, there was DC and Marvel.  Image was just starting with Spawn.  I remember when issue #1 LAUNCHED, and it was a nutty time.  After that, so many comic companies started coming around, and there was a relative lack of interest in Marvel and DC stuff.  I think the last comic series I bought a newsstand issue for was the Fatal Attractions crossover stuff for Marvel.  Regardless, I love me some comics and graphics.

I've recently started getting back into comics more, but the other problem is that I don't know where to start.  My tastes tend to lean more towards DC nowadays, because I realized that I liked their characters more than Marvel in a lot of respects.  For instance, I've really wanted to start reading the stuff coming out for Blackest Night, but I don't know where to start!!!  I'm sure that once I get familiar with all of the features here on Comic Vine, I'll be getting back into comics in no time!!!

So why the splitting of time between GB and CV?  Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my video games, as I work at a network gaming center.  However, I have realized that there seems to be too many good comics coming out that I just don't want to ignore.

Therefore, any suggestions for really good story arcs (I prefer arcs rather than individual issues, unless the individual issues are worthwhile) would be greatly appreciated.  Hopefully, I can become a decent member of the Comic Vine community.  Thanks.

*EDIT*  P.S. - I just read the rules, found out "no cussing on the forums"!  Had to go check everything I've written so far to make sure I didn't!!!  If you know me from GB, then you know that I can let it flow if need be.  Man, it's gonna be weird dualing between the two now.  lol

Welcome to ComicVine, Jakob. Yeah, it's a little weird switching from no cursing to cursing allowed at Giantbomb and back and forth, but you get used to it quick enough.

I actually debated on whether to use it or not, since I've decided to go the way of super villain on the Vine.  Plus, it's a video game.  It feels weird.  However, it's been my avatar for-eh-ver!

@War Killer: I'm sure plenty of dreams come true...and get crushed...on here.

@jakob187: Stick with the classic avs and you can't go wrong.

But yeah, the dreams of many regularly get crushed on ComicVine. Sometimes you feel sorry for them, but sometimes they deserve it :)

So anyways, guys...recommend me some stuff that I NEED to read.  I mean, I seriously don't know WHAT is going on anymore in the world of comics.  Did we ever find out how Wolverine has bone claws?  Last I read, Magneto pulled the adamantium from his skeleton and he ended up bleeding like a stuck hog in the Danger Room from the bone claws!!!  lol

I actually DO know the answer to that, but it's seriously been that long since I've read a serial.  Do people even use the word "serial" for a series anymore?!

I don't really follow X-Men too much so I have no idea the answer to that.

But, for stuff that I think is great (that isn't only limited to Marvel/DC):

Invincible: Possibly the best superhero comic today. The series is at issue 65 currently, but you can catch up fast through the trades if you wanted. It's the awesome story of a teen with superpowers who's world gets turned violently upside down when he becomes the world's most powerful hero.

Walking Dead: Another one by Robert Kirkman (who also does Invincible), Walking Dead follows one man and the group of people around him who are struggling to survive the zombie apocalypse. It's in black and white so it has a  neat visual style, and it's ridiculously full of emotional moments that may destroy your soul.

Conan/Conan The Cimmerian (Dark Horse): Beautiful fantasy adventure following everybody's favourite barbarian. It's good, dumb fun that is surprisingly well written at times and is full of blood and partially naked/naked women, so not for the light of heart or anything. It's collected in trades also, and the series had a re-title with Conan The Cimmerian and started a new story.

Secret Six: A great comic about some anti-heroes/villains of the DC universe who are a mercenary group. The series starts with a bang as the most ridiculously dangerous item to hold (ever) becomes their responsibility. Full of funny moments, good action, and sick villains. I know little to nothing about most of the DC universe currently and I jumped into it and loved it. I'm a bit behind, though.

Civil War: The summer blockbuster from a few years back. Some people hated it, some people liked it-I'm one of the latter. What happens when a law is passed making it illegal for superheroes to not be registered with the government? All hell breaks loose.

Dark Knight Returns: If you haven't read this, read this. It's one of the most amazing comics ever. Batman comes out of a ten year retirement to bring justice to Gotham City. I really can't speak highly enough of this title. Just read it.

Watchmen: Just read it.

That's about all I got, currently.

Okay, hold up.  Dooder, it's me.  I've read Watchmen MANY times.  I also own an original of The Dark Knight Returns.  Civil War, I've only read parts of, spoiled most of it by checking out the Wikipedia page ages ago.  Still wouldn't mind reading the whole thing.  Can I just get the trade paperbacks and that can get me caught up with that stuff?

As for Conan, didn't know they started up a new story!  Sweet!!!  Love me some Conan, big fan of Robert Howard's original stuff.

I like the sound of this Secret Six thing.  I'll have to look that up and see what it's all about.  Walking Dead...eh...when you're coming over from the gaming world, zombies are one of the LAST things you wanna see.  lol

Invincible sounds interesting, but the kid isn't all emo, is he?

I WILL say that two of my favorite characters are Batman (of course, who doesn't like Batman) and Daredevil.  Anything interesting going on with those doods?  How good is No Man's Land?  I've always wanted to read it, but I don't know how much background I'll need on events prior to it in order to know what's going on.

Ah, alright, I was just trying to cover all the bases in case you hadn't read some of the classics, haha. Regarding Invincible, there are some moments where he is clearly depressed, but it is completely understandable and he has every right to be. Most of the time he's pretty normal, and cracks jokes occasionally. It is also one of the most satisfyingly violent books ever. It seems all innocent for a while and then something like the absolute gang-beating of Allen happens, or Conquest comes and brings some hell. Seriously, the book is brutal.

Civil War and all related Civil War stories are collected in trades, to the best of my knowledge. I have the eight-issues of the core CW storyline in a trade, and X-Men: CW and Spider-Man: CW as well. So you should be covered.

Batman recently died (or so we believe) and has been succeeded as Dick Grayson. I haven't actually read the story so that's the extent of my knowledge. I don't read Daredevil currently, but I have read some of his stories. Guardian Devil is good, as Daredevil is given a infant who is predicted to be the Anti-Christ. It's a pretty thrilling story that had some ramifications on Murdock's life. I'm currently reading Daredevil: Ninja and Daredevil: Yellow, so when I finish those I'll get back to you.

I never read No Man's Land, unfortunately, but I've wanted to for a little while. I've currently got Hush and I'm trekking through that, as far as Batman stories go.

Welcome to the Vine.

If you want to get into Blackest Night and do it right read all of the Geoff Johns Green Lantern Arcs starting with Rebirth. I know thats a lot to ask but if you absolutely don't want to be out of the loop and understand most of what you read it's a good idea. Blackest Night is amazing BTW.

@Sparda: Yeah, I read about the whole "Bruce Wayne is dead" thing!  I was like "WHOOOOOA!!!  Where have I been".  Now I totally get what Babs meant by "Nightwing is just Diet Batman"!!!  lol

This Invincible thing sounds pretty damned tempting.  Also, OOOOOHHHHH, DAREDEVIL YELLOW!!!  Man, I've been wanting to get my hands on the Loeb Marvel Colors for a while now!!!  Unfortunately, I can never seem to get my hands on a copy of Daredevil Yellow or Spider-Man Blue, and since I don't shop online, it doesn't help matters at all.  =  /  Hulk Grey is at the city library, though, and I really enjoyed that.  They also have all the Civil War trades, so I'll have to pick those up and get to crackin', I guess.  Man, I really wish that the library had something outside of trades and graphics.  Oh well.

Also, Hush is BAWLIN'!!!  I haven't read Hush Returns yet, though.

@Red L.A.M.P.: I've heard a lot about that movie coming out, knew it was based on a comic, but I have no idea what the comic is about.  I'll have to look it up.

@Lunacyde: MASSIVE help, sir!!!  I won't lie:  I've read only a fair amount of Green Lantern stuff, but not a whole lot.  I'm sure that my buddy has a lot of that stuff, so I'll see if I can bum them off him for a little bit.

Concerning Blackest Night: If you have the money, buy Geoff Johns' run on Green Lantern, starting with Green Lantern: Rebirth, and following onward to Green Lantern: No Fear. There are several more arcs, all collected in trade form, and most of them are around 15 bucks, or less (the most recent two I bought as hardcovers, so they were 20 and 25, respectively).

Why don't you shop online? I ask only because it's an easy and cheap way to attain the trades in question.

@Korg: I have no card to order with, and the few times I've ever ordered online, whatever I ordered came to me in a beyond FUBAR condition.  Just don't trust it.  If it ain't something I can give someone cash for right at that moment, then I don't need it THAT badly.  =  /  Heck, I waited nearly 7 years after the Fatal Attractions stuff from Marvel before I could finally pick up the last three at one of the local comic shops, and they overcharge like crazy.  It hurt, but it's my favorite story arc in comic history still, so it was worth it to me.  Unfortunately, only two of the three books were worth it to me (Uncanny X-Men #304 and X-Force #25...X-Factor #92 was kind of "eh" to me).

However, in case I do end up deciding to pick up a pre-paid Visa card or something and buy me some comics/trades/graphics online, are there any good sites for that kind of thing I should know about that aren't eBay?
