My long box : or comics I currently own or have had a copy of in the past ( a mixed bag of Marvel , Vertigo ,Image ,DC

this is just a little list for books I currently own (poly bagged ) or all just in massive collections  staked up in a big plastic storage box  lying in my closet .
see when I do go out and buy a comic ( either online from amazon :in the form of over sized trades and prestige hardcover editions  ) or random late 80s marvel comics that would feature the then budding talents of  guys like Jim Lee , Rob Liefiled , Todd Mcfarlane  , Erik Larson , Whilce Portico and Mike Mignola to name a few all in single issue format .  In truth I like to buy older comics from the 80s (  the golden age as far as my own little mind would call back when I was a kid when I started buying comics in the 90s :mostly just to read over and over ) note when I was a kid I all I wanted to do was just read and enjoy them just for the fun of it ( I now I do the same except with collections )  and the 90s ( my favorite era : mostly for the image guys ) and also for what marvel was doing at the time in 1991 ( my first comic of then modern age was x-men # 1 by Jim Lee : I have all four variants ) and Todd mcfarlane`s Spider-man # 1 ( still trying to get the whole run  ) and many many more . but I better not give to much away for I will let the contents of this list to explain for itself . so without further a due I will present you with my wonderful list of great and (if you count the greatness of the 90s too ) great/ not so great .  then this will be  A treat for you . so here is my list of comics I own and or have owned  in the past couple of years since my grade school days . enjoy .( and I love the 80s / 90s :mostly in comics and other things : music , TV and movies )

List items

  • my first comic from as long back as I can remember when I was a little kid maybe four or five ( I am a little sketchy on the exact details of the time ) but I believe I got then one either in 91 or 92 (when ever the first X-Men Cartoon aired ) back before I was fully aware of the ever growing talents of Jim lee (all I knew was this was my x-men : my first exposure to the team and it`s core concept for the time . ) anyways this single issue marks my first childhood exposure to marvel`s merry mutants .

(also now I have all five variants of issue 1 )

  • This little gem right here I slightly remember owning when I was a kid (5 or 6 ,maybe seven ) all I could remember from briefly having it was the magnificent art of then up and comer Jim lee ( a year before wildcats )

anyways from I can recall that after awhile it had gotten ripped up and pages where gone or missing . (I was a dumb kid back in maybe 91 or 92 when I first had ) but now It is hard for me to even find a decent affordable copy of it . but it was and still is cool as hell . ( in a way the cartoon at the time looked just as cool as the comics penciled by Jim lee ) and also as a kid that young I had thought that this comic was the 1st original team of x-men ( but now knowing what I know now I feel like my ideals as a first time reader in my formative younger years was a little questionable in knowing everything about comics of the time ) but still this version of the x-men I remember most fondly more than late 80s/early 1990s x-men I would read later in various collections in my teen years . but the art in this issue alone inspired me at an very early age into just drawing anything comic related (heck even as a kid I always had the ideal that someday I would draw for marvel comics , maybe it could happen . but for now I am both an admirer of Jim lee and Todd mcfarlane from this time because as a snot nose little kid their rendition of the classic marvel characters was the definitive versions I would grow up with and like from then on now . ( but looking at it now is like meeting an old childhood friend ) and in a way this comic made me an admirer of the style of Jim lee (or the 90s style of drawing comics ) back when comics were fun and exciting , now is good and inventive but back then it was like watching an action movie without all the boring parts . (this was a little wordy ) hopefully one day I will find a decent copy of this issue . (I love 90s marvel )

  • Now this one I remember being an random issue I had gotten from an class mate of mine back in middle school along with a few others I bought from him back then for dirt cheap . (or as I was concerned my first non-main x-men title ) well let`s just say at the time I was way to excited to get comics (almost did not care what condition they was in just as long as I had one ) :D

also there was a promo for the siege of darkness crossover during the original publication (and my first introduction to blade ,ghost rider and the darkhold and more at the time )

  • I fondly remember buying this issue from a classmate in Band class back when I was a snot nose little pre teen runt . anyways the story goes like this ...

after buying said comic (note this being my first daredevil comic :ever at the time ) and at the time before I gain some serious knowledge on ol horn head this issue introduced me to what I would call 90s daredevil . gritty , blind ninja avenger of hell`s Kitchen . and in this issue daredevil armor`s up and goes out to find an powerful psychic who knows the whereabouts of an certain bio weapon that could (in away do anything) in other ways it makes ones hearts desires come true , also daredevil fights his evil double known as Hellspawn (a real daredevil or Hellspawn which ever you prefer ) anyways this story was crazy but that is what I was not expecting at the time reading it ( and at the time I did not really care for any other marvel characters other than spider-man ,I knew of daredevil but I really did not read intensely as others at the time after I read this ) but then their was the movie that came out in 2003 at the time but it was only later I went out my way to seek more daredevil (better or worse )better being frank Miller`s run in trade + the complete Electra hardcover . but over all my memories this comics was one of amazement and joy and most of all couriousity (+ at the time and I still do enjoy the pencils of scott mcdaniel and whoever did the inks at the time ,it was a look that later on in my high school years I would try and emulate in my own work )but I can say this book left an impression on me for a long time (I almost did not care much for the writing because being a snot nose pre-teen at the time I did not care much for the written quality of a story (I mostly would read them for the art early on it would be later that I would seek quality and craftsmanship . other than that this was a fun issue (did not make too much sense at the time until I looked for the trade later but I was fun as hell to look at )and as a side note I thought and still do think that armored daredevil was cool (even if it was for a little while )

  • this was my first exposure to non marvel comics at the time (mind you I had read some image comics before but never a full one , let alone buy it my self but luck for me I bought this little gem along with the daredevil and x-factor . anyways I remember this one for all the wrong reasons . and this is my first introduction to the art of brett booth , and I really did not care enough to know who wrote it at the time but oh well I was too young to really know all that .anyways when I had gotten this badboy all I really did was look at the art style and the graceful yet brutal action of the issue . now as a pre-teen this was everything good and amazing about the style of writing at the time , it was pretty much an action movie on glossy paper . anyways this comic I remember it getting thrown away by either one of my mean aunts or maybe Lost it at school (middle school ) at the time ,either way for awhile It was lost to me for a time .until a small little comic shop opened up in my town in either 2008-2009 and I was excited to find a copy . I know this little piece of 90s history was anything but groundbreaking but in many ways it gotten me into wanting to read more comics later (well more image comics if I could find them and everything else )anyways this was my first introduction to Jim lee`s stormwatch (it would only be extremely later that I would seek out the much better work that was done on this series by warren Ellis & friends ) but at the time when I bought this I feel it was and still is worth every penny (really I bought all three for $5.00) it was a steal back then . and at the comic shop where I bought a a copy for $4.00 SO Either way I still won ( and now this one is resting in my collection )

  • this was my very late follow up to reading x-men (well let`s just say at this point the only way for me to get anything x-men was from the re-runs of the 90s cartoon series and to tell you the truth I did not follow the comics very closely either so when I first bought this one alone with the other 90s comics at the time I was overjoyed ( and now this was also my first introduction (or maybe my second introduction to John Romita Jr ) he is another artist that has a style that has stuck with me for as long as I can remember . now the story for this was wild and I could have cared less about well a little but my real focus was on the art and how it looked (you see back when I was real young reading comics I was easily captivated by the look of everything on the page . and also this story was a jean grey and archangel story (and also my first introduction to Cameron Hodge and angel`s ex-girlfriend candy ) and in manyways I was confused by the exact order of events that happened before the story that had taken place , and I what happen in the story was anything easy to comprehend but at least John Romita Jr made it fun to look at ( it would only be years later that he would become one of my favorite artist , I think it had a lot to do with the way he drew things and people , he to was another I was trying to emulate and poorly might I add but that is another story for another time , anyways this was some I was trying to absorb into my mind very quickly , mostly how I could draw like John Romita Jr at the time . ) so to keep this brief this was easily one of my favorite single issues from the mid 90s . this lead to me (remember pre-teen kid seeking out more and more comics from this era (or any other ) I do not know how to discibe it , this was the begining of an obsession for me and it lit the fire for me to (at least one day do comics in some kind of form ) and this one only further sparked the flame ) this issue was all kinds of intense , it was x-men I did not see on TV in animated form . and in and in many ways this only the beginning of me starting my own collection later on . (my only regret is not having an copy this issue ) but one day I will have at least one to my ever growing collection .

  • this one I remember being on the spider-man video game that was made in 2000 as an unlockable (it had a short summory of the issue ) that only made me want to go out and get the real deal , lucky for me it was package with one of the many spider-man classics toyline (it was with the symboite costume spidey at the time so I was happy when I bought it ) besides I had seen the story more or less that was played out on the cartoon (it was and still is one of my favortie multi-part story arcs on the animated series :mostly for the costume and what would become venom later one ) when I first aquiired it was later on when the movie came out that would be around 2002 maybe 2003 , when I first layed eyes on it I was drawn into reading it trying to find out how the story that I remember seeing on the cartoon really went down in the comics . and sure enough this little free comic that was package with a comic book became one of my personal favorites (and this is when I actully started to read comics fully to get the story of how certain events really happened ) and also I remember in middle school trying to draw the cover for this issue multiple times until I had gotten it right , and i did it free hand at the time ( and I drew it note for note with only a few mess up hear and there but other than that it was something that I also looked at as insparation for wanting to draw even more later on while I was in school .anyways this comics always brings back exciting memories of a time where I all I wanted to do was just draw anything and everything that was in sight (mostly old 80s comics stuff to :which became an obsession at the time even when I went to high school ) and spider-man was already one of my favorite characters at the time (even before I started to read comics about him and every other marvel character in modern existence and only further incited my interests into wanting to know more about spider-man and 80s marvel comics . (note :afterwords I lost this comic to some wild circumstance that had I could barly remember but oh well that was life back then ) I hope that one DAY I could at least get another copy of this issue or atleast it should still be in trade somewhere (damn it I miss this a lot ) also ron frenz was starting to become one of my favorite artist at the time ,I did not read any of his thor stuff but it his little run on amazing spider-man that made me appricate his talents )also this my first introduction to Ron Franz and writer tom defalco . that was an amazing little team on the book and after this issue my obsession to know all things spider-man had begun in full swing (spider-mania ) is what I would say I was gong Thur during my middle school and High school years as a kid . and throw in a lot of 80s marvel too boot (back then I was a big marvel guy )great book ,good times

  • Now this one I did not have the pleasure of owning (but one Day I do intended on having a copy of my very own )but I did get my first glimpse from the spider-man game from 2000 as an unlockable go figure . anyways a friend of mine`s father had a copy of this issue (well he had the full maxi-series ) but I reading it for the true origin of the symbiote costume (or where the certain late 80s villain who would go to almost dominate the 90s and his name is Venom ) but before that it was just an black ball that instantly became an costume for battle damaged spidey , now this story changed my whole perspective on my favorite characters (and to me it was just as good as watching the animated series episodes )as a matter of fact it was way better than than ,it made me like spider-man even more as a character (the video game at the time also made me really like spider-man even more after the cartoons run had ended .any who I really enjoyed and I only started to want to read the whole secret wars maxi-series to find out what else was going to happen )as a matter of fact it was also the cover that had even further fueled my obsession for all comics spider-man (and as a side note :this was my first introduction to the work of Mike Zeck as penciler )and at the time the x-men of the mid 80s and the hulk even Thor and captain America well just almost about everybody in the marvel 616 (mostly anything marvel from the 80s ). I do intended to one day owning this either as a trade paper back just to get this issue alone or as a apart of some action figure two pack or something . lastly all I can say is I even attmitt to trying to draw in the style of this comic at the time after I was done reading it (and I failed horribly , it was embarrassing at the time but I was too young to care if people like the way I draw or not ) but this issue is a keeper ! I want it so bad it`s not even funny but enough about what I do not have it is the memory that makes it all the worth while . but one day I will get my wish .

  • now this one is on my list because It was the first x-treme spin-off of the x-men of the 90s featuring cable and frinds (this was my first introduction to Rob Liefild`s 90s marvel work ) and this was not half bad (from my younger-self`s opinion on 90s comics . well the first I time I read it it was kinda confusing but the art to me was amazing , it was nothing like I had ever seen at that point reading the little comics I had attained at the time ,this comic I remember getting from one of the many kids who was in my math class at the time he was drawing a lot of dragon ball z stuff and I rememeber just asking if he drew anything marvel or dc comics at the time , anyways I remember bugging him alot and I even went as far as asking him if he collected any comics and low and behold he had a few he just let me have for free (free comics was something I could not pass so I did what anybody would have did and I politely accepted his offer and the first comic out of the pack He own was x-force # 1 (I was beyond excited ,I almost went full annoying fan boy ). now I know there are alot of people on this site that hate on poor Rob Liefeld but I still think he`s great , but his early work on this title was something that had lift another unshakeable impression on my own artistic style to this day (well in very little trace amounts but his influence is there )but I really ,really enjoyed his take on some of marvels mutants (even a few of his original and co-created characters like deadpool , shatterstar and cable are great examples taking risk in comics at the time ) yes his art style is anything but Alex Ross or John Bryne but at least he was attempting to put out some decent if not utterly insane work . I admire him for at least being wildly prolific during his short run at marvel . anyhow this comics introduced me to various wild and sometimes confusing concepts that Liefeld would use alot in his later work at image comics . so to end this little trip and skip back and thur memory lane on this little gem (it`s not the greatest comic from the early 90s but it does stand out from what came before and a little bit after it too , to me (or my younger pre-teen self was all kinds of awesome :it was colorful , it was a little silly , it was brutal ,it was a little dark , it was everything that they could not do on the animated series of x-men that would run ironic a year after Liefeld left for image .but it was still great (this only added to my ever growing pool of insparations and influences that would effect me later on with my own work ) but this was a great comic only problem is the only copy I had was ruined by a little water damage (that was a sad day indeed when that happened )but I do intended to get this in trade to make up for lost time (well that and the entire run with rob liefeld and friends ) but when It was in good condition I had some good times (reading it in the middle of biology class at first period silent reading . fun time back in middle school back then . but looking at it now makes me wonder what would have been if rob Liefeld had stayed on his #1 title until the end or until the grant Morrison era (or maybe into the Grant Morrison era and beyond ) who knows but that is something that never was and may very well never be . but call me delusional if you want but I still do find some enjoyment in this little one more so than others on do . all I can say is it`s a fun little taste of what was to be youngblood ,supreme and many many others . so to end this 90s marvel to my middle school self was the stuff of legend (but my current self it`s something that should be enjoyed and appreciated for what it was trying to do at the time and that take mutants into places artistically they have never gone before .and that is extreme !
