I don't see a big deal. I haven't read any Sherlock Holmes, but it sure sounds like he doesn't have an explicitly clear sexually. No one ever said they were going to make Sherlock Holmes: The Mystery of Brokeback Mountain. I think people are around here might be fearing another Batman and Robin.
Also, to the person who said it's not appropriate because a lot of children watch it. Why can't children be exposed to homosexuals? That is absolutely ridiculous, especially given that one thing I do know is that Holmes is a drug addict. Is that appropriate for children? Because that is definitely true to character.

Adults don't watch action cartoons for the most part. Evidenced by the relegation of anime on adult swim. All of the more adult themes you're talking about are well represented in anime, and that is looked down upon even more than comic cartoons. Comic reading is not looked down on as much anymore with the 20+ crowd because of movies like Dark Knight and Watchmen anyway. Plus, people like you more when you don't call them idiots ;). Don't blame them for not liking comics, they aren't for everyone.
