Why must it always be Marvel OR DC? Why can't we love both?? *LEAVE YOUR FANBOYISM OUT OF THIS!!!*

No Caption Provided

There was a time, not all that long ago, actually, when I would've argued DC's superiority for HOURS with a person. By not all that long ago, I mean about a year ago. I thought the best thing Marvel had ever done was movies and Ultimate Alliance. Though, I did and still believe that Injustice pretty much made Ultimate Alliance obsolete. I tried getting back into Marvel comic books after I completed my DC collection by totally updating on all the titles I liked and bolstering my library with a (very costly) copy of a WHIZ COMICS #1 and a few TPBs. I found myself very frustrated with Marvel.

"Why can't it just be issues 1-whatever instead of everything being a series?!?!" I said. The manager of my favored comic book store answered "Don't get upset dude, it's okay." He handed me copies of Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, and Thor MARVEL NOW! reboots. I bought them and subscribed to Thor: God of Thunder, Iron Man, and Captain America. I loved them.

Let's not forget Dark Horse. I'll put it this way....if you like Star Wars you will LOVE some of Dark Horse's stuff. Spot on the majority of the time and in a literary lore playing field dominated by novels, it's nice to SEE what's happening rather than just imagine it.

I think I've met maybe...2 people in my entire life who only like being either happy or stoic. That's the difference between DC and Marvel. DC is stoic and epic and all kinds of awesome while Marvel is happy and epic (just not AS epic) and fun. Other than that, Marvel's art isn't any better or any worse than DC's, if we compare the best writer's in both companies, (ALL FANBOYISM ASIDE) they are pretty much equal. In fact, there are more parallel's between DC and Marvel than most people realize and these parallels can be a bridge to and fro OR a weak spot. Weakspots: Namor and Aquaman Bridges: Iron Man and Batman

No Caption Provided

So what do you think? Do you still only love DC or Marvel? Are you partial to Dark Horse? What makes one better than the other?

We can't love both because DC is obviously superior to Marvel.

My only problem is money. I'm kind of a completionist, so I don't like to have gaps in my series. That means buying the same titles every month, until the series hits an inevitable boring spell. Then there are the crossovers and events and tie-ins I get roped into. Since both companies are guilty of this I'm hesitant to start buying DC books. I know I'll get addicted to one, then another, then the big event an whichever books tie into it. It's too expensive to do that with multiple companies, so I stick with Marvel.

That being said, I love comics. I know DC has plenty of great characters, and I know I'm missing out on some great stories. I doubt they're any better or worse than Marvel. Let's face it, they probably have a ton of stories that are basically the same, just different characters.

I. I only love Marvel

II. I lied I kind of like DC

III. I'm only a fanboy or a bias fan because it is fun. It is human nature. You can see it with the US military. Why do Grunts make fun of Squids? Why does the Air Force make fun of Jarheads? Its all good wholesome competition. Why do Laker fans poke fun of Clipper fans. Both teams are from LA? Its the nature of men to be competitive.

IV. Yes, some people take it way too far and act as they are truly superior. You know them DC fans with their superiority complex, yeah they some pompous punks. * I kid I Kid*

V. Seriously, being a bias fan isn't a bad thing, having strong opinions isn't a bad thing, but everyone should respect everyones opinion. Life is too short to be angry all the time. Plus, there are more serious issues in the world than opinions on fiction. In the end Love (A)lways Shines Remember.

VI. I'm a bigger Marvel fan because I like more characters from Marvel than I do from DC. That simple. I still enjoy what DC has to offer. I have watched their cartoons and animated movies. SO WHAT?

I like to think most DC vs Marvel stuff is jokey in nature. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who hasn't at least tried to read from both companies.

Besides Valiant kicks the crap out of both of them anyway.

You can obviously love both but people just tend to favor one more than the other as (1) their respective universes have a very different feel to them and (2) its much easier to immerse yourself more fully in just one of those comic universes considering theyre both so large.

Also, more simply, they're rival companies. So of course that's bound to divide people. Its Coke and Pepsi, Yankees/Red Sox. You don't see people walking around with a Red Sox shirt and a Yankees hat on too. It just wouldnt make sense. And sure you can like both and that's totally fine, but most people will always deep down prefer one over the other. Some are just born fans AKA discover a certain one first and then take their side for life.

Once again, Brand Loyalty is a fallacious concept exploited by companies to be able to churn out an inferior product because they know that fanboys in their blindness, will stick with them no matter how poor their product is. Ergo they spend less effort and still get money. Especially since Comic Books don't really make all that much money anymore. Batman makes less than a million per month from his books. He'd need a century to make as much money as the Dark Knight or the Dark Knight rises from his comic books.

What Comic Book fans are actually reading these days is really just a beta for adaptations which will make all the real and actual money. Just a rough draft they're handing you to review, oh except you're paying them rather than the other way around. Now back on Brand Loyalty and why you're all idiots for subscribing to it. Not only are you encouraging both DC and Marvel to be assholes, you are essentially denying yourself entertainment out of misguided loyalty to a company that does not care about you in the slightest.

I myself just pick up the trades of whatever I like and ignore whomever's logo is on the book. I don't care if it's DC, Marvel, IDW, Dark Horse, Boom, or Valiant, I just read it if I get a good word on it.

Also, as an FYI, the average comic book has the same literary quality as a passably written fanfiction. And yes, that's supposed to be an insult.

tl;dr Fanboys are dumb and companies love them for being dumb.

@guardian_of_gravity: Again I find myself agreeing with you. But are there any series that really caught your attention? I had a huge interest in Sandman, Lucifer, Aliens and Predator. Anything in the main DC/Marvel genre with a film out...or potentially a film out has turned into dross. I am not being rude but I have found a fair amount of people who read a lot of comics do not read much in the way of proper books, so literary appreciation is not that high, hence lazy writing but decent artwork.

Before anyone starts crying I know not ALL comic readers skip proper literature. Just an observation over the years.

Others I collect the trades of whenever they catch my eye. Thor GOT in particular is showing up to be a favorite of mine.

It's more based off the 60's show then the Silver Age comics, but yeah it's got that general fun feel. Although I think it's a bit smarter about it's style.

Love Marvel, like DC alot ( well mainly Nightwing, GL titles, Aquaman and Talon) can't stand the elitist, snobbish attitude of SOME DC fans though, makes me like Marvel all the more.

In order:

Marvel

DC

Image, Dark Horse and various indies.

Screw brand loyalty it's super hero team loyalties all the way! But joking aside I could care less for these brand loyalties I read both and the stuff coming out now is garbage compared to the past. I loved DC for its legacy element in stories and using its villains with a bit more variety in motive and evil. As to Marvel back then I used to love them back when they were fresh, giving he heroes tougher opponent after another even outclassing them galactic level and how despite the arguments they always had a level of respect and eventual buildup of comrade. Now it's just crap, so indie and TV series spinoff comics for me.

There's nothing wrong with a little playful competitiveness, people do it all the time,

PC vs Mac

Coke vs Pepsi

Yankees vs Red Sox

Android vs Iphone

As long as it's respectful, I don't mind the debates

I can only find one of those where picking one is essential (the third one).

Which side do I take? I'll just say that in Pokemon X, my Greninja's name is Koji.

@hazlenaut: you are absolutely correct sir. I feel pity for the fanboys that stick with one company only. I love both, they both have such a rich history, and really great characters on each side. There's only one thing I'm not liking about marvel right now and that's that they are trying to make the avengers the "poster" team, when it's always been the x-men. You don't see DC trying to make the teen titans their "poster" team because it is and always will be justice league. But regardless I love both.

Well to be fair the Fantastic Four was always Marvels poster team. It was even there first team but I agree. I honestly love Dc compared to Marvel but I would be lying If I said That characters like Spiderman Magneto the FF and much more are not some of my favorite characters

DC will always be my favorite. That will always be the company I read and I feel like I am welcomed and I feel like I know everyone. That is the company I read and it is like my second home. I grew up with DC. From watching Justice League and Teen Titans on Cartoon Network every weekend morning to my first comics being a Batman and a Superman when I was 5. I love DC's long, confusing, multi Earth histories. I also like Marvel though and am now interested in buying some Marvel now. Mainly due to the reboot. Don't get me wrong. New 52 is great. I have been enjoying it, but many of the comics I love from DC have been not so good (Teen Titans), cancelled (Nightwing), or just have not been released as their own series (Doom Patrol, Martian Manhunter, Captain Marvel).
