Review: Godzilla Kingdom of Monsters 1 5

It's Godzilla for a new age! The giant green beast is reintroduced into this world by was of a reboot. Godzilla shows up in Tokyo and the Japanese try what they can to stop him!  The Good It's the reintroduction to Godzilla! What's not to love? The creative team of Eric Powell and Tracy Marsh on writing, Phil Hester on pencils, Bruce McCorkindale on inks, and Ronda Pattison on colors a great combination of talent, and that being said, this book is a light and fun read, but it's the per...

Review: Green Lantern Emerald Warriors #8 2

So far, so good as part 3 of the War of the Green Lanterns continues. Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner square off at the Green House. Who will come out on top?  The Good I'm living how this story arc is working for each of these books. Emerald Warriors follows the antics of Guy Gardner, Kilowog, and Arisia. While this war hasn't broken out completely, we're seeing the beginnings of it through another Corps member's eyes. Hal finally finds out about Gu...

Review: Batman Streets of Gotham 21 3

Tommy Elliot finally goes back to being Hush.   The Good As always, the writing and art are top notch. Dini and Dustin Nguyen work together perfectly on this book. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, each issue feels like an episode of Batman: The Animated Series. As for the actually story contained within the issue, I really like how Tommy Elliot is no longer Tommy, and he's no longer Bruce Wayne because he's back to being Hush. While I loved the idea of him taking the role of Bruce, wh...

Review: Silver Surfer #2 5

Silver Surfer has lost his Power Cosmic and must stop High Evolutionary, as Norrin Radd, from essentially becoming the new Galactus.   The Good I love that Norrin Radd has been Silver Surfer for so long that basic human things like emotions are incredibly confusing to him. We get to see more and more glimpses of Norrin's old life and his transitioning into Silver Surfer through some quick flashback sequences. It really grounds a character who, for years, the readers have considered "godlike." No...

Review: Green Lantern Corps #58 3

This is Part 2 of the War of the Green Lanterns storyline. Please pick up Green Lantern 64 for the first part of this story, which came out the same day.  The Good Green Lantern Corps (GLC) may be a part of a bigger storyline, but it still feels like its own book, and it still ties into the main event. While Green Lantern focuses on Hal Jordan, the leaders of the other Corps, Krona, and the Gaurdians, GLC stays focused on Kyle Rayner, John Stewart, and Ganthet. The best thing about this book is ...

Review: Hulk 30.1 1

Hulk faces a new enemy. One that has filled Thunderbolt Ross' job. The man's name is Fortean and he is looking to punish the Hulk for killing Thunderbolt Ross.  The Good The whole idea of the ".1 Initiative" was that new readers could jump on and get a sense of the character and what's been happening in the book; Hulk 30.1 is the best example of it. You really get a great sense of who the character is, where he has been, and where he is going from this issue. I know I've trashed Red Hulk a few ...

Review: Invincible Iron Man #502 6

Doctor Otto Octavius is still holding Tony Stark, and New York hostage unless Tony can heal Otto's brain damage in part two of "Fix Me"  The Good I really do like seeing other hero's villains in different books, and I'm enjoying the history between Otto and Tony in these past two issues. It really brings the Marvel Universe together as a whole. Aside from that, Pepper Potts as a hero has been one of the best things added to this book in years. She may feel a bit like a sidekick, but she's always...

Review: Xombi #1 4

Xombi is back with a new on-going series! David Kim, who once injected himself with a nanotechnological virus which can regenerate human tissue, and build new substances out other material.  The Good This feels like a Vertigo book, so why isn't it a Vertigo book? It may be because this book takes place in the actual DC Universe and not its own. So this book is a cool mixture of mysticism and science. The character Xombi may have been around for close to 20 years, but he rea...

Review: Superboy #5 9

Kid Flash and Superboy race around the planet... and by race, I mean they run for a bit, then stop. Run for a bit, then stop. Repeat until someone wins.   I'm going to do this review a little differently since I feel a bit down the middle with it. The Good The story has a great Silver Age feel to it: Two great heroes race each other. We've seen Superman and the Flash do it time and time again, so it really is time to see the next generation of heroes do the same. It's light-hearted and a lot of ...

Review: X-23 #7 6

X-23 and Gambit team up and search for people who have answers to her past.  The Good More than anything else, I loved the art on this book. It's beautiful and it flows together so well.  Sana Takeda did the art on this book and by far, it is the best art I've seen this week. I knew I loved it when I saw X-23 fighting some sharks. The action scenes are awesome and chaotic, but the kind of chaotic you want in a story.   Seriously though, X-23 fighting sharks is so awesome, especially one of the ...

Review: Batgirl #19 5

Batgirl teams up with the Grey Ghost to battle Slipstream. Meanwhile Barbara teaches Wendy how to fight a the lower half of a tree.  The Good I love this book. I love reading it, I love reviewing it, and I love the characters in it. I never thought I'd say the words "I like Stephanie Brown" in the same sentence, unless the sentence was "I like to read books Stephanie Brown isn't in." I feel differently about that now, since Batgirl is a solid, fun book. Bry...

Review: New Mutants #22 2

The X-Men don't exist in this timeline because mutants have been hunted down to near extinction. In part one of the storyline, Kitty Pryde leaves the telekinetic force field and grabs a camera from the outside world. Legacy (Rogue) views the contents on the camera and is never the same. In this second part of the story, Legacy looks for more answers about the outside world, but Danger sees Legacy as a threat.  The Good This idea of the Age of X feels done before (Age of Apocalypse, Days of Futur...

Review: Green Arrow #9 3

Etrigan the Demon and Jason Blood have separated and now Etrigan is destroying the forest! How can Green Arrow and friends stop a demon?  The Good This is going to come off a bit mean, but hear (read) me out.  This book is really weird when you compare it to the rest of the DC Universe. It doesn't really fit in to what is going on in the rest of the super-hero world. It's a bit refreshing. I've never been a huge fan of the world of magic in the DCU, but JT Krul grounds it well in this issue. Etr...

Review: Green Lantern Corps #57 0

It's the final battle between the Weaponer and Sinestro. Who will triumph?  The Good This story has been a lot of fun and very revealing about Sinestro's past and where his ring came from. It's the final battle, and it's on an epic scale. One of my favorite things from this issue was the constructs that Sinestro creates. It's very imaginative, and if it were actually real, it would be incredibly creepy. The Weaponer has quickly become one of my favorite non-lantern characters in t...

Review: Wolverine #6 2

How do you kill the unkillable? The X-Men, while working with Magneto, try and find a way to stop the demon infested body of Wolverine. Artist Daniel Acuna steps in as the artist in this run of Wolverine.  The Good I love how it is a new storyline, but there's still a few leftovers from the last arc. Not everything is wrapped up in a little neat package for once. I love the idea of this team planning a way to kill Wolverine and having to actually put it into action. Overall, it a cool issue, and...

Review: Silver Surfer #1 15

Silver Surfer is back! Norrin Radd visits Earth as Galactus feeds on Earth's sun (don't worry, it will only shorten the sun's life by a billion years). Surfer runs into High Evolutionary, and the unimaginable happens.  I have never really been a fan of Marvel's cosmic universe. I've enjoyed bits here and there about Galactus, but that's about it. Silver Surfer has always intrigued me, but I've never found a series featuring him that I liked, and no, I still haven't read Sil...

Review: Ultimate Comics Avengers vs New Ultimates 7

Note: I want to throw it out there that my favorite artist is Leinil Yu. I love his work no matter the content of the book. He could be drawing Thor and Hulk playing Rock, Paper, Scissors, and I'd still love it. That being said, I'll try and be as down the middle as possible. Just beware of this prior t the review. (I love Yu's art like G-Man loves Allred's work)  With the "destroy the vampires" mission just finished up, the heroes try and get to a "normal" life only to realize that the...

Review: Superman #708 3

Superman continues walking, but then gets dragged into the future to the Fortress of Solidarity to meet all the people he has inspired.  The Good I really like the concept of Superman being introduced to all the people he has inspired throughout time. There's lots of cool looking characters throughout the earlier parts of the issue. I really enjoyed the art by Eddy Barrows though. Overall, it was the main thing that stood out for me in this issue. Superman clapping a tornado away was pretty coo...

Review: Batgirl #18 0

Batgirl spends some time with a witch-boy named Klarion on Valtentine's Day. Can Klarion understand the meaning of Valentine's Day?  The Good Upon first read, it was just ok for me. However, I read it over again simply because I LOVE Dustin Nguyen's art, and realized I understood the book a bit more. It's less of a super-hero book and more of a fun book that happens to have super-heroes in it. The last issue with Damien was a lot of fun and I was hoping for a bit more of Robin; however, we get ...

Review: Wolverine #5.1 0

It's a surprise party for Wolverine! However, Wolvie is caught fighting some cannibals up the great white north! (Canada) Is this an issue anyone can pick up and read?   The Good I had a lot of doubts about these whole ".1" issues. It's supposed to be a place where any brand new reader can jump on and become a fan of a character. In a sense, this is true. Jason Aaron, who's been doing a great job on the current Wolverine series, really captures the essence of this character, and his writing...

Review: Magneto #1 7

Magneto wasn't always the villain. Before the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, Magneto was a mutant trying to do good in New York City.  The Good I didn't think I'd like this because Howard Chaykin was doing the art. I've never been a big fan. However, I feel that Chaykin's writing on this book was pretty darn good. He really captured a younger, happier Magneto that doesn't want to wreak vengeance upon the world. Even though the Magneto of now and the Magneto of then have relatively two different...

Review: Action Comics #897 8

Lex Luthor is still on the look-out for Black Lantern energy. Where does his search take him this time? To Arkham Asylum to meet with the Joker! Featuring a cameo from my favorite Lantern...  Good You ever read a comic that you liked so much that you get giddy thinking about it? Well, that's this issue of Action Comics for me. Paul Cornell, the writer of this storyline, has made this the most interesting book at DC. Yes, I said it. Can a whole issue of two men in a room talking be interesting? I...

Review: X-Men #7 3

The X-Men investigate something strange in New York City, something weird in the sewers. Spider-Man makes a guest appearance.   The Good The best way to describe this issue is X-Men Detective Agency. The X-Men search for answers in the sewers of New York City. The investigators (Wolverine, Storm, Gambit, and Emma Frost) work together extremely well here. Great banter between the team thanks to writer Victor Gischler who has been wonderful on this volume since the beginning. Penciler and colorer...

Review: Secret Six #29 1

Ragdoll tells the story of how the team "died." Tie-in with Action Comics as Lex Luthor and Vandal Savage square off. The Good Secret Six, since the start of the volume, has been a solid team book. Nothing has changed. Six great characters, and each one of them is a strong character, so you never truly feel like someone hangs out in the background every issue. This issue revolves around Scandal Savage moreso than any other member of the team, which is pretty cool since I'm not too familiar with ...

Review: Batgirl #17 4

Damien and Batgirl stop kidnappers, and Batgirl gives Damien a lesson in how to be a kid. The Good I loved how Bryan Q. Miller wrote Damien in this issue. He's essentially an adult, in a boys body who worships his father, yet has no clue who his father truly is as a person. Although Damien is an overly serious person in this issue, he comes off as hilarious. I loved the fact he couldn't grasp the idea of field trips. These two work extremely well together in a book, and I'd personally rather s...

Review: Wolverine The Best There Is #2 4

Wolverine "SNIKTs" his way through 32 pages...  The Good I liked Juan Jose Ryp's art in places. There was a very nice two-page splash in the middle of the book as we get a peek into Wolvie's head. There's also a great sense of perspective when you take a look at the buildings in the background. Everything leads to a vanishing point, as it should, but it's something that quite a few artists sometimes leave out. The Bad Pretty much everything else. By far, the weirdest thing in this issue was Beas...

Review: Weird Worlds #1 3

Three stories about the DC characters Lobo, Garbage Man, and Tanga.  The Good Three well done stories in this issue. All of them are essentially an introduction to these characters, two of which are new. Lobo is really the pull for new readers since he's not incredibly well known, but has a decent cult following. All of these stories are strong, but Tanga was the one that really stood out. She's flying around the universe alone, just trying to find someone, anyone because the universe is pretty ...

Review: Secret Avengers #8 4

One of Steve's old war buddies is working with Max Fury and the Shadow Council   The Good I know the name Max Fury is incredibly cheesy, but I love the character, and I love his team. It's his story and team that I am more interested in. The Shadow Council stuff is pretty darn cool and the perfect antagonist for the Secret Avengers. John Steele seems like a perfect fit to the Shadow Council, and the guy is a great character. I love the art work on this book as well. It really helps the covert-op...

Review: Green Lantern Corps #55 1

It's an all-out war on Qward as the Green Lantern Corps takes on the Weaponer!   The Good I was a little skeptical at first on this storyline, since over the past few years, the Green Lantern books have been on such a large scale. It's been a gigantic war on epic proportions all across the universe. The third issue of this storyline really turned me around on the overall arc, as we see that this book doesn't have to be on a universal scale to be great. I love the fact that one man has the power...

Review Deadpool #30 3

Deadpool is hired by Vampires (or as he refers to them "Draculas") to stop a group of other Vampires (Draculas) from destroying the human race.   The Good According to the cover of the book, this is a tie-in with the "Curse of the Mutants" storyline. However, don't let that fool you. This is barely a tie-in. Yes, the events take place during the Curse of the Mutants storyline, but it doesn't really "tie" anything in together. It's a fun stand-alone issue. As always, the art and writing are extr...

Review: Wolverine #4 3

Wolverine's soul battles the lord of Hell, while Wolverine's body, inhabited by a demon, fights Colossus on Earth.   The Good This storyline has been a lot of fun. It's had great writing and great artwork throughout, and it's definitely something you’ll want to read in trade, if you can get a hold of the first three issues of the storyline. All-in-all, it’s fun and there’s a huge reveal at the end of the issue that will change Wolverine’s life, at least for the next couple of years. The fight s...

Review: Shadowland: After the Fall 1

What happened to Daredevil AKA Matt Murdock? Can reporter Ben Urich and Foggy Nelson shed new light on what happened after the end of Daredevil's reign over Shadowland?   The Good There's two distinct art styles within this issue, done by two different artists, Roberto De La Torre and Marco Checcetto. One style is more contemporary and the other has more of a noir feel to it. "The noirish" style really fits the story and writing a lot better and adds a bit more to the tone the writing ...

Review: Shadowland #5 5

The end is here! Shadowland is over! Who survives? Who bites the bucket? The book started off with Daredevil seemingly in the grip of evil while New York City's heroes try to release him.  The Good Above all else, the pencils of Billy Tan, inks of Victor Olazaba, and the colors of "Guru eFx" is what makes this issue pop. No offense to the writing of Andy Diggle, which I enjoyed in this issue, but the art spoke for itself here. You don't even need the word balloons for the first half of the issue...

Review: Raise The Dead 2 #1 0

The zombie outbreak has spread, and people are just trying to survive in the sequel to the first volume of Raise the Dead.   The Good It's not your traditional zombie book. Not only can humans be infected with the zombie virus, but it also seems animals can be as well, at least birds can. There's also a bit of the government's side of things, without making it feel too much like Resident Evil. I really liked the artwork. There's a great sense of openness and isolation in some of the pa...

Review: Action Comics Annual #13 3

A young Lex Luthor meets Darkseid for the first time, and tries to take Darkseid head-on! Second story involves young Lex Luthor's time with Ra's Al Ghul.  The Good I love it when Annual's are self-contained stories about character's hidden history and not just some lame one-shot "we have to fight this villain" deal. If there's one thing I've been saying for quite some time now, it's that Paul Cornell's run of Action has been extremely awesome, and this annual is no exception. Altho...

Review: Captain America #612 2

Bucky Barnes is on trial for his crimes as Winter Soldier as he sits in his jail cell with his depowered cyber-arm. The daughter of Red Skull rises to power.  The Good This reads less like a super-hero book and more of a gritty crime book with super-heroes in it, and it's phenomenal. Prior to this storyline, the book had a few not-so-great issues, but this story puts the book back on par with what the series once was. The whole idea of Bucky going on trial for his crimes as the brainwashed ...

Review: Uncanny X-Men #530 8

There's a new disease outbreak that only affects mutants. Meanwhile, a new breed of X-Men is being created, and the Collective takes over Japan's underground crime syndicate.  The Good It's a new storyline in the Uncanny series and it's another really interesting one. The "Quarantine" part of the storyline is probably the weakest of the three stories in the book, but it's still pretty strong, especially when you find out how effective this new mutant-disease is. I'm really interested in The...

Review: Green Arrow #6 1

Oliver Queen has had enough and takes on The Queen, the current owner of "Queen Industries" and her assassin Nix, but does The Queen know something about Oliver's past that he wasn't aware of?  The Good Although the past couple issues have been so-so, this book gets right back on track with this issue. It takes a bit of a step back from the Robin Hood role Oliver has fallen into the past 6 months and focuses more on Oliver and his past. There's some great action as Oliver busts back into Qu...

Review: Chaos War Dead Avengers #1 0

Swordsman, Yellowjacket, Vision, Captain Marvel, Deathcry, and Doctor Druid, long dead Avengers and Avengers villains, find themselves alive and questioning why.  The Good It's great to see some of my favorite Avengers alive again: Captain Marvel, Vision (the REAL one), and Swordsman. I like the idea of them coming back and having to work together, but that's about it. There were a couple flashbacks in the book that were all right, but the best part of the book was who they brought back at ...

Review: Superior #2 0

Simon Pooni was granted a wish by a space monkey and he became the super-hero Superior. He and his friend Chris discover what powers Simon has as Superior.  The Good Over the past couple of years, Millar has let loose to mixed reactions in the comic book community. For me, a person who has a bit of a dirty mouth in real life, I felt his books had a bit too much cussing in them, and the stories lacked the heart they once had. This all changes with Superior, which is written by Mark Millar an...
