Hey!!! There is a big F@#$@# HOLE in space folks!

This may be one of those things that I have mentioned just about every time I write up something either on the "most brilliant" minds in the Marvel Universe, or about any of the current space adventures that DnA have been writing.   This is just something that is bugging me a lot and I figure If I start typing this now will motivate me to go off on the subject tomorrow.   Man does it drive me crazy though.

State of the Mutant World -- Part 5, with a complete list for you

--Part 5

When I was talking with Clayton Crain (X-Force artist) I mentioned what I call the Yost contradiction to him.   His take on it was interesting.   He said, “Well isn’t it kinda nice to see that Cyclops doesn’t know everything.”    I thought that was a decent take on it.   I still think it may be more of a problem of creators and editors across the board not communicating well on the subject.   Then it occurred to me what if it was something else all together.

What if we are all classifying them incorrectly?   Could it be that many of these people we have had classified as mutants for so long in our minds and in Marvel history are not mutants?   This brings up so many more possibilities so I started to examine things that could be factors in this situation.

Are the mutants that were repowered no longer mutants?   Technically a human powered by Terrigan Mists would be an Inhuman.   Not a mutant.   Someone given powers artificially is usually classified as a mutate.   What is Xavier then?   The defining fact that we have always known is the presence of the X-factor gene in the DNA.   Beast said that he couldn’t reboot it.   High Evolutionary was supposedly successful in helping Magneto using a Celestial.   Apocalypse has Celestial technology and was responsible for almost half that part of the list.

Now we have the Cloak and Dagger Question.   Who is misclassified by default?   Not all of these mutants are on Utopia.   Not all of them constantly interact with the X-Men.   I guess we should have Dr. Nemesis take a look at their DNA and let us know what is what Maury Poulvich style.    “Who dat baby daddy?”

There is also the question about temporally displaced characters and those from separate realities and times.   Do they count?   This wouldn’t mess up the list too much but could put some in question.   Did Blink go back out of reality with Lois at the end of Necrosha?   She could have so she wouldn’t show up.   Colossus’ brother certainly would be in that same boat.   Are there many that can mask themselves from Cerebra?   That could also be part of this category.   I don’t think many of the people on that list are powerful enough.   Especially when powered by the Cuckoos.

We saw the blips show up from the techno-zombies.   Are some of them still around?   If they had the X-factor they would have to show up.   We were told some people would stay back.   I certainly hope that we got a little more than Cypher and Proteus.   That is hardly balance in the universe of good and evil.

I’m going to say that even if you eliminate most of the possibilities that there have to be more.  We don’t know much about the origins of Huber, Task Master, or Echo.   They could end up being mutants as well.   The unconfirmed list is too long.   That list doesn’t include the new kids coming up in Avengers Academy in a couple months.   Also they talk about Dr. Reyes but we haven’t seen her.

I guess my imaginary family is a little messed up right now.   But everything should be on the same page soon and I will continue to keep track of them.   Who knows what the state of the mutant race will be in 4 more years?   I’m just glad that I will be along for the ride.

The State of the Mutant World Part-3 198 MY ASS!

**Before I get off on my rant here I want to thank Dustin Freshly a.k.a. Fresh03 for helping me double-check, organize, and update this list.   You are a good friend and I appreciate it.**

198 mutants left?   Pshaw!   I’m going to start this list with just the mutants that are currently alive at this moment confirmed and powered after M-day.   This does not include people that were repowered.   We have a whole other section dedicated to them.   This doesn’t include the mutants reanimated by Selene that we didn’t see destroyed.   Yes that is another whole list all together.   This list even got shorter when it was finally confirmed that Cloak and Dagger were not mutants.   (They may call them mutants again in 10-20 years…it’s Marvel after all.)

Here they are all 216!

You may not even know most of these people unless you are an avid X-fan.   You won’t know most if you are just getting into this story either.   I know shocking isn’t it.   This is what happens when obscure characters are brought into the mix from years past, and when they invent new ones that must have been around because there weren’t any births right?   *cough* Greymalkin *cough*   Okay, I really could keep coughing, but that would be a waste of time, I’m sure you get the point.   At least we found out Ink wasn’t a mutant.   Oh but he led us to another new one.   For purposes of this list we do not consider Taskmaster a mutant, he is on another part of the list all together, as is Huber from X-Factor.

I don’t want to leave out two other important categories from this list.   Second Coming wanted us to realize the severity of the mutant population’s problems by dealing with their most recent deaths.   So here is a list of the mutants that were confirmed powered after the Scarlet Witch’s spell, that didn’t make it to the Second Coming.

29 That brings the total of powered mutants post M-Day to: 245

217

Beautiful Dreamer

218

219

Braddock, Jamie

220

240

241

242

Wallflower

243

Wither

244

Wolf Cub

245

Unnamed

Is there someone you think we missed?   Probably that is why we have this next part. This presumed dead category which also features the temporally displaced in time/space.

7   Post M-Day Total: 252

246

Bishop (displaced in time)

247

Forge (Displaced, Possibly Deceased)

248

Mysterio III (Possibly Deceased)

249

Omega Red (Possibly deceased)

250

Pryor, Madelyne (Displaced pyschic entity)

251

Rasputin, Mikhail (hiding in alternate dimension)

252

Vulcan (possibly deceased)

252 is just a tad over 198 right?   Not if you are rounding money that is for sure.   This hasn’t tackled the complicated subject of repowered mutants or what those people are passing for these days or not.   I’ll take a look at that in the next post.

The State of the Mutant World for Second Coming--Part 2

Second Coming looks to be a great story so far.   Anticipation was certainly built up long enough.   We were given an onslaught of preview images for speculation.   You all know the ones I’m talking about:

 “One will lead.”

“One will die.”

“One will rise.”

“One will sacrifice.”

“ALL WILL UNITE.”

The story is good so far.   Hope and Cable show up.   They find that it is the real time but that the X-mansion was destroyed.   Then they get introduced to some of the bad things that have developed while they were gone, as it was almost as if someone was waiting for them to show up.

Hope thinks it is horrible that no matter what she has seen throughout time and her travels, all she witnesses is destruction and war.   She was raised a soldier so she should get over that real quick.

At least Bastion and his Human Council were not the only ones that found them.   Cyclops’ Alpha Squad shows up to help out.   Having members of X-Force mixed with classic X-Men becomes interesting when the non-black tighters start to realize what is going on with this group.

I have no doubt that this is going to be phenomenal story telling by the team, and we are pretty much assured a change in the status quo yet again for the mutant race.   I love it so far and would rate the story and the art in the inaugural issue a solid 4.5 out of 5.   But it would have gotten a five if there were not two things that bothered the crap out of me.

When there is supposed to be this touching scene at the beginning where they talk about the deaths of three mutants during the Necrosha story.   The thing is, when Cyclops mentions that there are 181 mutants left…I had to face palm.    When I got to the back of the book, BAM!   There it is again…Less than 200 mutants.    I know this was in the preview pages, they may not have been done by the writing team, but I still have to say Marvel has no right letting this slip.   The fact is there are more than 200 mutants confirmed alive and well RIGHT NOW almost 250.

There is some shock for many of you I know.   Like I have said in the past the X-Men are another family to me.   I have this bad habit of keeping track of my family.   I started this back when the whole 198 thing started.   I did this to try and figure out who they were and with the help of my good friend Fresh.   I have a pretty accurate count of who is living and breathing and mutant in the Marvel universe.   Not only that but I have it listed, broken down and dissected into reasoning.

We added and subtracted when characters were revealed or invented or sometimes in the case of Matt Fraction, brought back from obscurity.   (It’s okay I like Adam X….the original 3 Summers….but that is another rant.)   This started happening and we were treated to a little tidbit of knowledge from scribe Chris Yost.   ((I will place link to interview here.))    He tells us that the 198 was just catchy.   He said that there were probably like 300 mutants out there.    This let me know that I was right to keep my eye out for more family members.

We found them, I’ll break it down and provide the list in part 3.   So if I know who they are… Why doesn’t Cyclops?   Why don’t the people at Marvel?   Why doesn’t the book’s author who already admitted it?

The State of the Mutant World for Second Coming--Part 1

The merry Marvel mutants are like a family to me.   Uncanny X-men was the first comic I ever read.   My father gave me all of his old comic books for Christmas 1986.   I didn’t know it then, but he had given me a new family to keep tabs on and a new universe to enjoy.

Over the past seven years loyal readers of the X-books have been treated to multiple events.   The one that stands at the forefront of everybody’s mind is House of M.   A little over 4 years ago Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, was left in a fragile mental state after the popular Avengers Disassembled story.   While in this condition she was manipulated by her brother, Quicksilver, to use her powers; warping reality and giving almost everybody their heart’s desire.   The new universe was a peaceful utopia for mutants.   (Not to be confused with the floating asteroid off the coast of that is the current home of most of the world’s mutants today.)   At the end of this great event the mutant universe would change forever though.   “No more mutants.”   Those three words altered reality throughout time as the X-factor gene disappeared from mutants across reality.

Decimation
set in.   Tragically some mutants died as a result of loosing their powers.   They never saw it coming.   The events of that day became known as “M-Day.”   Mutants numbered in the millions, just the day before.   Now all that could be accounted for were 198. Well 199 if you counted the mysterious “Mutant Zero,” that was later revealed to be Typhoid Mary.   The mutant population had essentially become an Endangered Species

Hank McCoy set out on a quest for answers.   He had to find out why some people kept their X-gene intact while others did not.   Along his journey he partnered with the Age of Apocalypse doppelganger, Hank McCoy a.k.a. Dark Beast.   During their research they found that the X-gene had even been removed from even the deceased mutants buried in the ruins of the Weapon X facility Neverland.   This was a key point for character development for Beast as he saw his darker side at work and even went on a darker path himself briefly.   Faced with that, he looked to others for any sort of answer.   Talking to every mutant geneticist and expert on the planet, he came to nothing but dead ends.   Finally he sought out Dr. Strange, (then still Sorcerer Supreme,) and it was revealed to him that Wanda Maximoff’s spell had altered reality across the universe.   Also seen in his visions however, every alternate reality version of himself; also coming to dead ends. Even after the conclusion of that arc Beast was teamed with what Cyclops dubbed the “X-Club.”   Their entire mission was to seek and find a way to save their species.

While many of the prominent mutants had developed a “Messiah Complex” trying to lead a fallen race something phenomenal happened.   A surge of energy shot across the world and a blip on cerebra showed up like the Star of Bethlaham in .   Going to investigate this incident, the X-Men discovered a decimated town and that there were multiple interested parties as well.   A child had been born.   The first mutant child birth post M-Day brought a ray of hope for a dying race.   This child would later be named Hope.   (Mutant 200 if you are keeping track.)

After battling against Purifiers, Mr. Sinister, and even fellow X-man Bishop, the X-Men recovered the baby girl.   For the safety of the child Cyclops sent her with his son Cable into the future so that she could grow up and someday come back.   The only problem was that Cable was being tracked by Bishop.   Who was hellbent on killing the child he thought would grow up to cause his horrible future that doomed mutants.   Cable’s other problem, a damaged chronol device that would only let him move forward through time.   Having the chance to stay longer in some times than other he jumped further and further forward.   We watched Hope grow up and Cable grow old.   There was even the brief Messiah War that happened when Cyclops sent X-Force to the future to look for Cable.   This event stuck out mostly because it was a future where Stryfe had taken over the world from the thralls of Apocalypse, and Deadpool was still around after being locked in a building for eons.

The process of Hope and Cable running from Bishop would continue for almost a year.   This did not cause our current 616 present to take a break at all.   Norman Osborne had been given the keys to America and its security.   His Dark Reign would soon interfere with the X-Men and their lives in San Francisco.   This caused more issues and Cyclops and his team formulated a new plan.   This plan established a new Nation (X) for the mutants on the remnants of Magneto’s Asteroid M risen of the coast of San Francisco.   The new island was dubbed Utopia, and would be a protected free state where all mutants were welcome and given sanctuary.

Things were hard enough for the mutants on Utopia when the dead started rising and assaulting the island.   These dead mutants were popping up everywhere even on Cerebra’s scanners.   There were even millions detected in Genosha.   This new assault was lead and manipulated by Selene, former Black Queen of the Hell Fire Club.   She oversaw things from her citadel on Necrosha.   Her goal was to ascend and become the goddess that she believed she should have always been. (Being the oldest mutant, a supreme sorceress, and an External is just not enough these days.)

Essentially evil is thwarted and the world is ready and Hope and Cable arrive in our time.   The Second Coming has occurred.
