X-Men v3 Issue 5 0

Well with a single issue this series has just about redeemed itself in my eyes. After a great start to the series, the last 3 issues really failed to impress and reading this book became a bit of a chore. Luckily though it has managed to come back from the grave with a stellar action-packed issue that managed to prove me right and be unsurprising in the best way possible.    The issue opens with Xarus' troops on the doorstep of Utopia, with hundreds of air units and troop transports in addition...

Batwoman Issue 0 0

I'll be honest, Batwoman was my favorite book of 2009, barely beating out Flash: Rebirth. And Flash is my favorite character, so that's saying something for me. Her book managed to take a fantastic character that had barely seen the light of day through 52, the Question, and Final Crisis, and elevated her to a status where people actually knew who she was. With breathtaking visuals and a strong story, nothing could beat it, no matter how hard they tried. That being said, I was clearly excited fo...

She-Hulks Issue 1 0

She-Hulks. Wow. I must say, I'm surprised this is out. That's not to knock on the She-Hulks or anything like that, in fact I like them. I'm just surprised to see that they have been given this little mini-series to expand on their adventures. I for one am excited, because this book gives Marvel a chance to expand on some characters the Hulk franchise isn't exactly highlighting at the moment and it does so in a manner that isn't just a throw away anthology story. So for that reason alone, let...

Hulk Issue 27 0

I never really cared one way or the other about General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross. He was always a bit of a villain, but much like J. Jonah Jameson, he was a man of a different time who was afraid of both change and that which he didn't know. As a result, he was trying to do the right thing in his mind, so at the end of the day I could never hate him. Slowly though he's growing on me, due in no small part to this series right here, and the love he has for Betty and his commitment to serving hi...

Batman Inc. 1 0

I hate Grant Morrison on Batman. "Grant ****ing Morrison" as I would say. His concepts have never wowed me and trying to find an accessible Batman book since he started working on the franchise has been next to impossible. However, now the saga of time-traveling Batman and Dr. Hurt is over. Thank GOD. UGH! I hated all the stupid nonsense he's been putting out the last year and aside from some books at the beginning of Batman Reborn including Batman and Robin, I've avoided Batman. With everything...

Batman: The Return One-Shot 0

Well, it's over. The Return of Bruce Wayne ends today with Batman: The Return, and finally we don't have to deal with the time-traveling antics of Bruce Wayne. To me, Batman is a character who doesn't time travel, doesn't have the luck to come back to life, all that stuff. That being said, I'm not a fan of Grant Morrison on Batman, however with the conclusion of this chapter of the saga of Batman I'm more than happy to jump back on board. So with that, let's dive into Batman: The Return.   The ...

Avengers Children's Crusade Issue 3 0

And so the ongoing saga of one of the best comic books of the 2000's continues! With all the fun of a ball in a cup, Young Avengers has proved that it is one series that just won't stay down, and for good reason. As long as they continue to produce quality installments like this, Marvel has a sure hit on it's hands. Love, family, action, and much more, all handled in such a tightly told package, Avengers Childrens Crusade is one of the best books out right now.   The issue opens with the Young ...

Amazing Spider-Man 648, BIG TIME! 1

BIG TIME IS HERE! Wooo! I for one have gotten very excited for this for quite some time. Now all of the previews with those same first pages of the Avengers swooping in will stop! But seriously, I've been very excited for Big Time. The idea of actually progressing Peter and making him more of an adult after taking him a step back during Brand New Day is perfect, and I for one am excited to see where Dan Slott takes the character and how long this format for Spidey will last. This could be the st...

Amazing Spider-Man 647, End of Brand New Day! 2

And thus it ends, Amazing Spider-Man is no longer on sale three times a month. What does it mean? Well, Brand New Day is now officially over. While many people were furious with Marvel for what they did with One More Day, which led into Brand New Day, it's now over a hundred issues later, and I find Brand New Day to have been a great success, with a plethora of great stories resulting from the change in the status quo. Yes, I joined with the start of Brand New Day. But will I leave now that it's...

Avengers Academy Issue 4 0

As Avengers Academy passes the halfway point in its reflection of its characters, spotlight is shone on the character of Mettle, the big ticking time-bomb to keep an eye out for. Don't be turned off thinking it's a crossover or that you need to know all this stuff going in. The beauty of Avengers Academy is that any point is a jumping on point, so with that in mind, fans old and new, let's jump in Avengers Academy issue 4!   The issue opens flashback style, showing Mettle prior to looking like ...

Amazing Spider-Man 646 0

Well, I'm not gonna lie. That was disappointing. Yea sure, it had all the elements of awesome going for it but something about this issue didn't do it for me. Still,  just like Brand New Day, it succeeded (In a way). It closed the door on Brand New Day quite well, and I'm happy to see where things go from here. But let me explain why by diving into the finale of Origin of the Species!   The issue opens with the Lizard, that's right, the Lizard, taking care of the Osborn baby in his lab, trying ...

Amazing Spider-Man 645 0

Okay, so the idea of Batman going crazy now pales in comparison with the idea of Spider-Man going crazy. That's right, in part 4 of Origin of the Species, Spider-Man goes ape-s*** all over his villains, and you better watch out, 'cause he's coming for you! With the end fast approaching, who will live, who will die, who will be changed forever? Let's find out in Amazing Spider-Man 645!   The issue opens with Peter in a science lab making more web-fluid as we cut to the police station from last i...

Amazing Spider-Man 644 0

And the ongoing saga of Spider-Man and a baby continues! I must say, it seems like this is more of a conclusion of the Gauntlet than anything else was, what with villains like Electro, Sandman, Rhino and Vulture coming through. And seeing how I loved the Gauntlet, this story is building steam in my mind and with the halfway point here, I’ve gotta say, we’re in for one great ending (Or so I hope!)      The issue opens with, you guessed it, Spider-Man swinging through the city with the littlest...

Amazing Spider-Man 643 0

Well, with Spidey on the run and closing out the magic that was Brand New Day, we hit part 2 of the Origin of the Species. While part 1 wasn't perfect, it did have me excited for more, and if for no reason other than I can't fathom how Spider-Man is going to get out of this situation unscathed. So on that pleasant note, let's take a look at Amazing Spider-Man 643, Origin of the Species Part 2!   Our comic opens with the scene from last issue continuing, as Doctor Octopus has delivered the baby ...

Superboy v4 Issue 1 5

Well, it is yet again time for Superboy to begin anew, with a new writer, new artist, and a new book. My relationship with Superboy is an odd one. I was never a huge fan of his character, and yet I've read many books with him, including Conner's original 90's solo book and his more recent Adventure Comics run. For a character I never really seem to crave, something always seems to draw me towards the exploits of the Boy of Steel. On that note, I was actually very excited for this comic and aft...

Teen Titans Issue 88 2

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! IT'S GOOD AGAIN! I CAN READ TEEN TITANS AGAIN!  Okay, got that out of my system. But seriously, let me just have this brief moment to rejoice because it feels so good to be able to read Teen Titans again. It was one of the first comic books I really read and followed and it was soooooo good for so long that it pained me deeply to have to drop the book last year when issue 75 came out and broke my heart with it's quality. Sorry guys, it just...

Hulk Issue 25 0

And so ends the Loeb era of Hulk. I must say, it had it's ups and downs but now that it's over I think I'm gonna miss it, because it offered something most comics don't and that is plain and simple goofy fun. That being said though, I am interested to see what the new Hulk has to offer, especially since it's got a team from a very different book coming onboard (Parker and Kardman just did Atlas). Hopefully their track record of great books will continue though, so let's check out Hulk issue 25! ...

Secret Avengers Issue 6 0

Well, six issues in, I think I can now say that this is my favorite Avengers book. It wasn't for a while, due to my strong love of New Avengers cast of characters, but that book has really just disappointed me with it's crazy magic story. Secret Avengers meanwhile has been growing and showing some strong signs for the future, trademarks of Brubaker writing. I really think that with the involvement of Steve Rogers, this book might be the one to look out for the most as well, since what happens in...

Secret Avengers Issue 5 0

I TOLD YOU SO! I KNEW IT! HA! HA! HAAAAA! Okay, got it out of my system, but it had to be said. Since he first popped up, I linked this new "Nick Fury" to Nicks brother, Scorpio, and I was right... In a sense. Now, just because I saw this coming does not mean this was by any means a bad issue. In fact, it was a great issue, and that I saw this coming means that the story is flowing naturally and feels right. And Secret Avengers is slowly creeping up to be the Avengers book done right, making it ...

Carnage Issue 1 0

Well, it would appear that after one of the coolest deaths in comic book history, it's time to bring back Carnage. This is a mixed bag for me, because I truly felt his death at the hands of the Sentry in New Avengers was one of the best I've ever seen. As it stands, I do enjoy some Cletus Cassidy, so it's sad to see him go, and hard to imagine a new version of Carnage that isn't him, but alas, it's time to delve into Carnage issue 1.   The issue opens like many a day for New York, with an armor...

Kick-Ass 2 Issue 1 0

Well, it's about time. After an excruciatingly long wait (This is my sarcasm by the way), Balls to the Wall is finally here, and it's just what you'd expect it to be. Violent, foul-mouthed, and quite enjoyable. I'm a big fan of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., so the chance for more of their goodness is always a plus, but unlike the masses, I wasn't clamoring for this book so soon. Regardless, it's here and it's here to stay so it's time to kick some more @$$ with Balls to the Wall.     Essenti...

X-Men v3 Issue 4 0

Well, it's now past the halfway point of this arc, and I have to say, it's so lackluster. I mean, I feel like this shouldn't be the main X-Men book, which an uninformed buyer might think it is. With just decent writing and good art, it isn't bad, it's just not something that seems like it'll have any lasting impact on the X-Men and it's almost as if this entire thing won't matter come the second arc. I wanted a lot more from this, I wanted something that could prove that comics and vampires mix ...

X-Men v3 Issue 3 1

In a giant sea of comics books and an almost as giant sea of X-Men books, it's easy for a book to get lost in the shuffle, to get pushed towards the bottom of your books in terms of importance. That is the case with the newest volume of X-Men, as I found myself without enthusiasm going into this book, deciding not to even purchase it due to the lack-luster second issue and overall handling of story. See, it's not that I don't like vampires and X-Men, I think it's great and goes back to a simpler...

Daken: Dark Wolverine Issue 1 0

Well, it's time for a new Dark Wolverine series, not even a month after the last Dark Wolverine series ended. On the bright side though, now I don't have to read all the past Wolverine books to get a sense for Daken and Romulus and everything going on. Instead I get to jump right into Daken: Dark Wolverine! Excitement building!   The issue opens with 50 years ago, Wolverine is stumbling about and falls into a heap of mud as we hear Daken monologuing about how much he hates Wolverine. So much so...

Amazing Spider-Man 642 4

Looks like this week is one of those beautiful weeks where we, the lovely reader, gets a double dose of Spidey goodness! That's right, it's time for more Spider-Man! It doesn't feel much like it though, since so much of last issue was spent in the past cleaning things up. So this is current time, real world Spidey. And now that he's through the Gauntlet and the Grim Hunt it looks like he's going back to the Origin of the Species.   The issue opens with Hammerhead and Electro meeting up in the a...

Amazing Spider-Man Issue 641 3

And here it ends. Finally, after over two years of working around it, we find out exactly why nobody knows who Spider-Man is. To be honest, I couldn't wait to see how they explained this, how they managed to keep his secret a secret without changing anything that came before it. Overall, this story arc has shown me that you can make a mistake less of a mistake if you go about things properly. That they managed to somewhat repair the damage of One More Day is a miracle and let's just hope nobody ...

I Am An Avenger Issue 1 0

So I totally didn't want to buy this. I wanted to just take a glance at it, see if anything looked good in it and then read it online. Here's the problem though, I saw the stories, had to have it. I mean, Young Avengers, Iron Fist AND Squirrel Girl? How could I not? So, moving past how awesome that is, I decided to buy it and this is one of two surprisingly good books of the week, but when you have characters such as though, how could it not be awesome?  The first story is a little Young Avenge...

X-Men: Curse of the Mutants- Smoke and Blood One-Shot Review 0

In another instance of completely different cover art, I was under the impression that Clayton Crain, the cover artist was drawing this issue. I guess Marvel didn't really emphasize that all of the tie-ins for Curse of the Mutants would have different interior artists than the covers. Had I known that, I would have reacted completely different to this book, but nonetheless, opening this book at the store to see completely different art was a nice surprise that went well with what the book would ...

Hawkeye & Mockingbird Issue 4 Review 1

As if it needed further reinforcement, this issue solidified Hawkeye & Mockingbird as the automatic top of my stack of comics whenever it comes out. I mean, seriously. This book is fantastic. It's got great character beats, great art, a fun tone, and it really hooks you in with it's tone and pacing. If somebody is new to comics I'd recommend this series to them, since it really showcases some of the best work you can find in Marvel right now, and you don't even need to know anything for it. ...

Wolverine Vol. 4 Issue 1 Review 0

Well, here we go. My first real attempt into getting into Wolverine. I mean, to be honest, the only reason I really decided to go for this was because I'm reading every single X-Men related book in the main continuity right now, so this clearly had to be read. Reading the concept for this book, I simply went "Meh". See, this just sounded kind of boring and when a book starts off, I like the character to be the first thing handled, not some giant concept. I splurged though and bought this book, a...

Avengers Children's Crusade Issue 2 0

Two months ago a glorious thing occurred, Young Avengers RETURNED! Yeah, sure it was under the Avengers banner, but everybody looking into this book knows it's really about the Young Avengers, despite the Wolverine cover. As a result, I couldn't be happier on this day to be reviewing this book, just for its very existence alone. The fact that it's also one of the best books out there definitely helps the situation become even better.   The issue opens where last issue ended (SHOCKING!) with the...

New Avengers vol 2 Issue 2 0

End of the day, this is the Avengers book I really want. I know that's a weird way to start a review, but I just have to say that this book always seems to do so much right and I can't get enough of this group of essentially random characters saving the day. This is a book that shows you don't need to have the biggest names to be a great book, even if the team does include the likes of Spider-Man and Wolverine. When there is a foe no one hero can withstand alone, I hope for the New Avengers to s...

X-Men: Curse of the Mutants- Storm & Gambit One-Shot 2

See, no offense to the lovely team behind X-Men, but after reading this book, I feel like this is the team that should be working on X-Men. Never in my life have I wanted for there to be more with a certain team than I did here. From the choice of characters that you never see paired together but have a great history all the way to the way the book made me look at the entire vampire war concept in a new light, this book succeeded in ways I can only hope X-Men can follow up on.   The issue opens...

X-Men: Curse of the Mutants-Blade One-Shot 0

This week featured a lot of X-Books, and it's easy to let some of them fall to the side. I don't blame people for that. In fact, for that very reason I didn't get this book, because I was already buying 3 three other X-Books this week and didn't feel the need for this comic. Instead I just read it, and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. Do you need it? No. But is it good and a nice prelude to what the X-Men have been facing recently? Yes.   The issue opens with a vampire slayer being attac...

Namor: The First Mutant Issue 1 2

It's a funny thing when an ongoing book starts with a tie-in. It happened a couple years back with Deadpool and Secret Invasion, and it left me with pretty much the same feeling as this issue. Disappointment. Yea, it's good, but it just doesn't feel like this is how you should introduce Namor. Namor is a fantastic character, full of opportunity to explore a realm like nothing else we've seen. Instead we get this. A decent comic with flaws that ultimately just doesn't impress me enough like I wan...

X-Men Legacy Issue 239 4

What I think this book does best is go off and do its own thing. While the other X-Men books focus on vampires and new mutants, Mike Carrey sees in the past that there is so much they can take from and expand upon, and without going any further than a few years backs, takes concepts nobody else would handle and makes them into something old and new all at once. By selecting the cast and story that Carrey has here, he can take on the world and it'll feel like a new experience every time. And yay ...

Avengers Academy Issue 3 0

Christos Gage and Mike McKone have been telling a slowly growing tale with a bunch of no name characters the last couple of issues, and with issue 3 that trend is kept the same. However, where those books felt slowly by comparison, this book felt like it was building toward something and you're on the edge of your seat knowing something is about to go down. Quality is going up on this series just as I've always known it would, and it's great to say I told you so.   The issue opens with the orig...

Shadowland: Power Man Issue 1 1

If there have been two characters to have grown leaps and bounds in the 2000's, more than anybody else it would be Luke Cage and Iron Fist. Coincidentally these are two of my favorite characters, so seeing their continued presence in the greater Marvel Universe excites me. With the release of Shadowland: Power Man, not only must a high standard be met, but a little part of me is giddy with seeing a book about my favorite Heroes for Hire.   The issue opens with the origin of our new Power Man, a...

Secret Avengers Issue 4 2

I think I've discovered what my problem with this series is. It's not fun. Is it good? Yes. Is the art top-notch? Yes. Is the story cool and does it have mega-geek moments?  Yes. Is it fun? Well... not really. It's just that Brubaker isn't a goofy-jokey kind of writer. That doesn't mean it's bad, it's just not my normal cup of tea. Now, having said that, it's still a consistently good book and it's got some great writing and art so let's get to it.   The issue opens with Sharon Carter trying to...
