Yes and NOOOOOOO!!!: The DC Universe Revamp (part 2)

this is the second time im writing this blog, as the first time i did it was at my job where the network crapped out and my girlfriends computer froze just as i finished up. Lets hope for better luck here at home on my crappy device.

ok. So a couple of days ago i wrote PART ONE based off of the info released to us about the DC Universe Revamp as of June 6th. Since then, we have gotten a majority of the rest of the info. so lets dive right in to part 2.

YES

  • Deathstroke.
Now i almost hate the amount of change we are probably going to see with DS in this revamp. I love the current character. Never has it been more fun to root for the villain than with DS. But Seeing as to how i will more than likely stop reading a majority of DC's titles after this, DS's title will probably feel like an ongoing elseworld. Both Costumes look kind of over the top... but none the less, Im excited.

Blue Beetle #1
  • Blue Beetle
It looks like for the most part, Jamie's life will stay the same. While i dislike how likely it is that everything that has happened to him prior has never happened (i feel like his life was perfect), i'm interested to see his highschool life. I'm also interested to see if, with DC's new edgier feel, his Hispanic heritage will be touched upon more. There are allot of controversial things going on with the southern boarder.
Im very pleased that DC is keeping THE REACH (or something similar) in his origin. Im really praying for more World Ripper Stations, and i am hoping against hope that Tovar gets a much extended existence.

  • The Legion Titles
I'm really loving the idea of these two comics. I'm not too big a fan of the Legion, but this just seems interesting. One title will be about The Legion more or less like we know and love, while the other will showcase the "Less" as it follows 7  Legionnaires stuck and lost in the present time. One of the things that i really find interesting is that its an unofficial crossover title. Undoubtedly, both teams will be mentioned in the others title, and we will probably see characters overlap into one anothers titles. I find this increasingly interesting when i consider that people dont really like crossover titles. Its is a clever way around that dislike, and im interested to see how it works out.

  • Action Comics
While i dont have much love for Superman the red-and-blue-boyscout of metropolis, i have always loved Clark Kent the young adult. Birthright. Secret Origins. Year one. Seeing Superman when he was still semi relate-able is always cool. The first story about Clark in the new DCU seems cool.

Blackhawks of the 2011 DC revamp
  • Black Hawks and Men of War
As long as this new team of Blackhawks isnt supposed to replace the old ones, im down. I always liked seeing the hardcore groups of normal people who went up against DC's heroes and villains (Squad K and GCPD to name a couple), and this group looks like the best of them.
And the Men of War title just looks cool. A good chance to bring in some real life hardship and awareness of our troops. Im not one of those big supporters of the military, but as long as we have daughters and sons out there fighting to keep america on top, i guess they deserve recognition wherever it can be given.

  • Resurrection Man
just a solid idea that has yet to work out as well as it should. im glad its getting another go.

NOOOOOOOOOOO

  •  The Teen Titans

Wondergitl (right) with retired Young Justice teamate Arrowette.

+.... so let me get this straight. Wonder Girl, who was once a SUPER goody two shoes who had trouble breaking rules and only even had sex with her multiverse saving martyr boyfriend of several years a couple of times... is "revamped" into a belligerent powerhouse thief?  Good girl to fearless leader to criminal?

Robin (Tim Drake)
+ Tim Drake, the most like Batman out of all of the Robins, had to "step out from behind his keyboard"?That makes it sound like he was never a Robin. Like he just bypassed the best parts of her character (being a 12 y ear old boy who figured out who Batman was, and all the years as the most independent Robin to date) and went straight to Red Robin for no reason. Dan said each of the Titans would have a story similar to their current one... but so far i dont see it. And What the hell is up with those wings? No one in the bat family has never has an emphasis on gliding, Tim least of all.

revamp Superboy
og Superboy
+Superboy... just ... wow. The teen titans pictures look fine i guess, but the Pictures for his individual title show him looking like a cyborg. really? He's braniac lite now? I'm guessing there will be no connection to Lex Luthor either? Tactile TK? Its all less likely if Conner is half machine.

+It looks like they turned Kid Flash back into a speeding idiot. Thats not that big of a deal. I mean, him maturing once he joined the Titans was one of the coolest things they ever did to him, but whatever. That costume looks like vomit though. What is that? A speed Mohawk?
+and whoever those other people are... ew. I hope they are at least supposed to be remakes of old Young Justice or Teen Titans characters... but even if they are, they are more vomit designing.

Conner Kent, Cassandra Sandsmark, Tim Drake and Bart Allen have a rich history in the current DCU. They survived being Young Justice together as the world hated them, and young and old heroes alike came and quit all around them. In the last decade, very few characters have grown as much as they have. They are arguably better Teen Heroes than the original Titans, since Young Justice operated as borderline outlaws for years, with virtually every adult (hero and pedestrian) in the world against them. And unlike every other team in the DCU, they never gave up on one another. Its very upsetting to me that DC is willing to throw that away.  Especially for something as ....90's as this? Mohawks and Sleeveless tees?  Random Wings and spider legs? I feel like im watching Jim Lee's 1990'sImage work all over again. "its hip now because it has tattoo's and a mohawk in it!"

  • Suicide Squad
DC Reboot Suicide Squad
Harley, King Shark, and Deadshot. These characters in the current DCU would not work. Both men are nothing but sexual innuendos and thoughtless murder (and it doesnt work with Shark like it does Deadshot). They two barely work together now in Secret Six. I seriously think they have said two sentences to each other in the 5-10(im not sure) issues that King Shark has been around. Its understandable too. They are roughly the same personality with different powers. Luckily, there are 5 characters soooo much more important than Shark that you never really notice that he hasnt been utilized for 12 pages.
But Adding Harley to the mix makes this even worse. Shes a great character... but she doesnt fit in with this group. there is a reason wh 99.9% of her appearances are with other women or the Joker. She doesnt respond well to other men.  She is either trying to be really good... or trying to do something for Joker.
DC either doesnt know their own characters... or they have made such changes in the core personalities of their characters that they
THINK this will work. either way im not looking forward to it.

  • Static Shock
Another character i love. i read him during Milestone. I watched the show. And i reveled in his addition to my favorite super team the Teen Titans.
... he doesnt need change. How the hell did he create that costume? The old one was seriously clothes from his closet. minimal sewing  required. And that hover board?  Dwane McDuffie JUST died, and your already bastardizing.. sorry.. MODERNIZING... one his greatest creations? Let me just say there are only so many changes you can make to Vergil before you have a different creature altogether. I'm really hoping this is limited to his look.
I, Vampire #1

  • I Vampire
....groan.  Maybe this will work... i have no idea what they are planning. But when you look back and realize that DC VERY RARELY has had anything to do with vampires in the past... it seems like their trying to jump on the Vamp wagon.
I was never a follower of Andrew Bennett's adventures, so im not going to comment on his new Zac Effron

Verdict

My rage with this "Revamp" is on a roller coaster. I'm no where near as mad as i was when i saw that first JLA picture, but i think thats mostly because ive accepted that i may be dropping 75% of my pull list come Fall.
The main peeve i still have with this whole thing is that they are still calling it a Revamp and not a Reboot. A revamp would have been a universe thats mostly the same. But The changes here go origin deep. Thats a reboot. Just like how the Ultimate U was its own beast, because otherwise it would not have been the same U.
I may be surprised. I may be reading things wrong. Or this may be a year long event type deal were the universe will be re-writen in 2013 with most of this stuff undone. IDK. But right now, this whole things seems like a pointless attempt to get the Smallville/True Blood populace into DC comics... and attempt that might have had merit if the average person was open minded to comics.
But lets be real. Little kids to teens to adults to seniors all still see comics as a joke. There will always be a subsection of humanity that is drawn to comic books, but it will never be the mainstream thing DC is trying to make it. The best idea will always be to make these Summer Blockbuster movies to get peoples attention, and then push the comics into their faces. You liked Ironman? here's a really good issue of the comic for a dollar. Batman? here's a comic and a videogame that comes with another comic. Get a free issue of this comic when you see this movie in imax.
This reboot is probably going to gain as many readers as it looses... making it truely pointless and a slap in the face to fans like me, who go into their shops every week to read about the characters they love only to find that everything has changed.
This is the first time in my life i didnt think DC was doing the right thing. Thank god, if DC fails me, i'll still have Skybound.

Just to say this, all the Bat-family stories aren't gonna have any big changes from what I've heard, so Tm was Robin.  That doesn't change.

but how exactly does it not change, when the summary they gave for titans makes it sound like Tim wasnt doing anything before he joined the titans. It says he has to get out from behind his keyboard. What, did Batman have him doing Oracle work?

@Grim:  Jumping to conclusions is never a good thing, but to answer your question.  Tim, probably left the superhero business.  It makes sense when you think of his character.

not unless something has changed. the only time he ever wanted to quit before was when his dad found out and made him quit. He genuinely wanted to stop for his father. But he fell back into it secretly, and the only regrets he had were that he had to sneak around.
and even when he got replaced, retirement was never an option.
Posted by Amegashita
@Grim:  No, the only reason Tim went into the hero business is from genuine concern for Bruce's (Batman's) well being.  Outside of that, he has always been the Robin with the most reason to not be a hero.  He had a family, and friends.  Honestly, the only reason he stayed a hero for as long as he did is cause of him losing his family.  Still, it compiles with his character.
Posted by Grim
@Amegashita: ive never read him that way. sure he has the last reasons, but he has always been the most dedicated. If there was ever a time that Tim would have quit, it would have been when his dad made him quit. He risked allot wen he decided to sneak back into being robin. If Tim had any quit in him, he never would have gone back.
Tim went out of his way to become robin, and his mom died while he was training, but he stayed. and Tim has not backed down from a single thing since becoming Robin. I dont think current Tim would ever decide to quit unless someone important to him asked him to.

@Grim:  Tim did have his reason's to quit.  In fact, when Bruce said that he expected Tim to take over the mantle of Batman when he can't, Tim refused because he was afraid of the position, he even said something along the lines of only becoming Robin because Batman needed a Robin.  And throughout his entire hero career, he has continuously made that statement.

I think I am most upset about the Teen Titans and us having no idea with leaves Stephanie Brown (Batgirl). Also Superboy looks completely different than he use to and this makes me upset because I liked his old costume

yeah i think we read Tim differently. He has said that a few times, but Dick also flat out swore he would never be Batman.  I think its always been one of those things that he think's he means, but doesnt. Batman always asks Tim to stick around, and the one time Batman didnt ask him to, he came back anyway. He would only ever quit if someone asked him to (like Bruce or Conner or someone important like that). Seeing as to how his parents are dead, and everyone else in his life has begged him to return to heroism when he wasnt... i just dont see the reason. The only people in his life who might advocate retirement are JAson, Damion, and maybe Arrowette. But none of those people have as much of a pull as the core Batfamily and the OG Young Justice Crew, who always want him around

@haydenclaireheroes: yeah im a fan of steph too. I already knew she would be getting the short end of the stick.
Posted by Amegashita
@Grim:  I always felt, that at some point, Tim would revert himself from the front lines of super heroism, and from the summary it sounds like he did that.  Besides, Tim was always the type who liked to spend most of his time behind a computer, so it still fits.

Static will be just fine.  Short of resurrecting Dwayne McDuffie, there's no writer who will show more respect and care to the character than John Rozum will.  Also, while I agree that Suicide Squad does not look good, that has nothing to do with the line up. I can see Harley, King Shark, and Deadshot being a fantastically enjoyable team.  Just...just not with those designs.

eh. im assuming there will be a bigger lineup eventually. But King Shark has never been good with females. But in general, I dont like that so far two of the 3 members arent even team players. Harley has always been wishy washy when not connected to Joker or another female villain, and King Shark's goal in life seems to be to annoy the world. Neither of them has ever portrayed the ability to put aside their own needs for a team.

wow, all the ones you don't like, i can't wait for...except for i vampire..that just looks bad...

It's hard, but i'm trying to remain calm about the whole revamp thing until the comics start coming out so we can read them and figure out for sure just what the heck is going on with everyone! I just hope they don't mess Tim up....

I kinda like the new look static has.

Edited by BlackArmor

Really worried about tim and im upset both that static apparently wont be a titan (neither will aqua lad) and at statics costume. Im the only one i know who likes Tims wings but i hope he doesnt become a charecter who constantly remarks about how flying makes them feel. How ever everything can go wrong and i wont care as long as the smoke girl is The Secret if they do that i will love them forever i really miss that charechter alot.

also inorder to settle the disagreement between Grim and Amegashita I can dig through my Titans comics for the quote where tim says that the robin thing was always supposed to be temporary

one last thing Im a big Dracula fan and a big Hellsing (manga) fan but at this point i hate vampires and at this point will buy the vampire commic just to burn it and stab the ashes with a stake

Edit:
this is a quote i dont know how to scan a picture and the text bubble is to small anyway
"I never liked living two lives. I never planned on doing it for this long. And I never wanted to lie to my dad. "
-Tim Drake

i actually like red robin costume

Posted by Grim
@BlackArmor: i love secret too. If thats her though.. well, lets just say the dark and evil look doesnt suit her OLD character...

as for Tim, i know he has said it countless times that he didnt plan on Roin being his life... but look at his actions. He fought to be Robin, he was the closest to bruce's style, and he refused to stop being Robin every time he was given the option. He said he didnt want to be Batman, but he put on the costume and went after Jason in Battle for the Cowl. Tim is the bat-embodiment of "say one thing and do another".
I am almost the exact same way. I work for Parks and Rec in my city. I started working my job when i was 16 because i needed money and i was fairly positive i would get the job. I never wanted to do it before i did it, and i never gave much thought even as i was doing it. Now im going on 10 years and im assistant director of our summer Daycamp. Its hellish work (cuz my boss is a bitch), and i never get to play or spend time with the kids (the brunt of why i stayed all these years). I only applied for the assistant director position because i looked at all the co-workers who i knew would apply for it... and there was no way in hell i wanted them making decisions regarding my kids. I always tell everyone i would leave if i could garuntee a job that pays as well in this economy.  But really, i love my kids (many of them have grown to adult hood and/or co-worker status in front of my eyes) and i am proud of the end result of the work i do. If i became a film actor tomorrow, i would still make time to work daycamp every summer.
That to me is how Tim is. he went after the Robin position because he knew it needed him, and he has never left even when he says he wants too because he is proud of the work he does, and no one can do it like him. The Batman Beyond Tim pissed me off exponentially for the same reasons. Tim is the most driven and dedicated of all the Batfamily. None of the other Robins (save Steph) ever asked to be Robin. They were thrust into it. So why is it that Tim is the only one people really believe would just up and quit?
IMO you would have to cripple Tim take him out of the bat-life. He wont stop doing this job until he cant... no matter how much he says otherwise.
