The Spectre's Origin in the New 52 (radically different)

In the Phantom Stranger zero issue that came out the other week, we see how the Phantom Stranger is indirectly responsible for the "birth" of the Spectre of the New 52 universe. We also see the Phantom Stranger's origin.

The issue starts off with some above-average narration and I was thoroughly enjoying it, up until the Spectre's part came around.

A generic angry detective (Jim Corrigan - the original Spectre) is searching for his...wife? Girlfriend? I don't even remember - it was too frivolous to matter. The Phantom Stranger is directed to assist him.

Short story short, it goes awry and the detective is shot and killed by assailants unknown.

And just like that, he gets a new snazzy cape, is a "Spectre" and is pissed off. No divine mission. No...nothing, really.

I'm severely underwhelmed. Disappoint.

It's important to note that, according interviews with DC writers, this is the creation of the Spectre in the DC New 52 universe. The Spectre did not exist before this even. Which I find to just be another "This isn't right. This shouldn't be this way." plot point in the New 52.

Phantom Stranger's origin is suggested to be that of Judas Iscariot. I find it interesting.

Personally, I can't wait until the New 52 is over. Too many things are just...wrong. Cute as a novelty, but entirely wrong for a main continuity.

The presence just stated that the Spectre is not his wrath or vengeance but instead he the representation of his/her/it's desire for justice.

The Spectre is too powerful and complex for such a small beginning...or at least he was.

Maybe the New 52 Spectre will be a friendlier ghost.

The Spectre was Corrigan in the old universe too. How is this new version any different?

He's no longer the Vengeance of God and is now just an angry ghost.

@Funrush: i don't think Spectre is going to be the wrath of God in this incarnation, i think he is just a really pissed off ghost , maybe since pandora, phantom stranger and that mystery dude are already omnipotent they don't want wrath o God Spectre thrown in, this could be a watered down version , thats my theory anyways

Oh well that sucks. Spectre should be the be all, end all in the DCU except for the Presence. This is just ridiculous. Another casualty of the New 52

Thanks! Does he keep the memories and experiences of the deceased host? From the spread, it seems like it.

No, he only has the memories of the current host, though Jim Corrigan was able to access the memories of the Spectre force itself at one point.

Also, like I said in another thread, I basically hated every panel of that comic.

I was extremely confused by the Spectre's origin. Can someone explain to me how being shot = Spectre?

That bit wasn't made clear at all was it? It was just blam! now he's the Wrath of God. He's lost all the menace and impact his character had pre New 52. Where's the Spectre entity or anything like that?

I have no idea what the Pre Flashpoint origin was, since I've only been into comic books for about nine months, so I really was confused.

The basic concept of pre New 52 Spectre is that he is the agent of God's wrath who is supposed to inflict punishment upon the guilty and evil of the universe. Like a cosmic judge, jury and executioner. The difference between the golden age and Post Crisis Spectre is that the pre New 52 Spectre is an entity like the Phoenix force who is bound to a deceased human who acts as a host for him. That's as simple as I can put it. Hope this helps!

That's... Just... Correct.

I've never really read much of Spectre but I know that he's supposed to be a badass, be the wrath of God, and when he's in a comic, badassery and mayhem ensues. This is basically "a guy got shot. Now he's a ghost. Oh, and he's empowered by God. Yeah!"

I would hope for a long backstory involving the Presence seeing the need for the Spectre as more heroes and villains arise, and as the world becomes more unstable with all these superpowers flying around; it should happen over time, like, he appears in ancient times as Socrates to attempt to bring reason to ancient civilization, and his death turns him cold and hardens him; then he appears again to kill Hitler and make it look like suicide, maybe have him appear in a medieval event, and then have the Presence say "Screw this, you will be my vengeance on Earth continually" and set him loose in 70's or 80's America to be a superhero like we all know him to be.

THAT would be an awesome story. This, however, is just lame.

I hope you're related Judas or some other person from the Bible because judging by sales and that the top ten most popular comics on this site this week were all from the New 52. You're going to be waiting a very long time. Have fun in your immortality though.
