It is not just that though. Part of the problem is that people are worried that the books are inappropriate for children. I hear that many people on this site got into comics when they were younger. Not to mention all of the people that DID read comics when they were young. Children are always going to be reading these books, alas, you are correct, it is not a medium for children, necessarily. Then again, Marvel and DC are both family companies. That is obvious. Otherwise, if kids weren't meant to be reading he books, they would be more similar to vertigo, having more mature themes. Not only that, part of what DC was trying to do with the reboot was make is accessible for younger generation. Otherwise, the fanbase will die with all of the older fans.
Basically, as much as comics aren't for kids, they are made for them. The comics coming from Marvel and DC and generally suited for children to be reading. Otherwise, like I said, we would be having more adult themes inside these books. Do I need to explain myself more, that might not all make sense?
There are things in every medium that are inappropriate for kids but comics are sold in so little places that they are only exposed to it if their parents let it happen. There's sexual and violent themes on every channel on television but people are worried about comics? That's a joke. Tired of parents whining.
